How cute! Here's an article about the practice that I found while looking to see if this was true or not. It is, and it's adorable!

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 75 points 1 month ago

Guys. Cheetahs are the largest of the small cats. They don't eat dogs.

[-] bottleofchips@lemmy.blahaj.zone 50 points 1 month ago

That’s exactly what a cheetah would say

[-] Varesti@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 month ago

And they're always crying! That's why it looks like their mascara is permanently running.

Either that or they share a makeup artist with Alice Cooper 🀘🏼😁🀘🏼

[-] devaly@ani.social 25 points 1 month ago

comfort food

[-] Godric@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago

Snacks also calm me down <3

[-] pmk@piefed.ca 15 points 1 month ago

I wonder if they had at least one person asking "are we sure the cheetah won't eat the dog?" and then they decided to just try it and see.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Probably not a coincidence that they went with golden retrievers (and what looks like it might be a mastiff, amstaff, or pitbull) and not Tibetan spaniels 😁

[-] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 month ago

Tbf they look delicious

[-] Stolas@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

I have a strong urge to pet them.

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 4 points 1 month ago

cuteness overload

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

This must mean it's okay to have a pet cheetah, yes?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 month ago

Do you have a 15 square mile backyard? If not, probably not 🀷🏻

[-] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago
[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

Hmm.. What about a rowing machine?

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Can it do 75 mph?

[-] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 month ago

I have an apartment with a dog run in the back, that's enough, right?

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 month ago

Depends on how big the dog run is, I guess 🀷🏻

[-] valkyre09@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

15 square mile?

[-] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I mean, maybe we could not capture cheetahs and isolate them and learn they actually need companionship? This is OrphanCrushingMachine energy.

[-] zedgeist@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago

They rescue orphaned cubs who need care and companionship. Cubs in the wild only have like a 5% chance to live to adulthood. You could, you know, read the good wholesome article..

[-] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

They would otherwise be dead.

Would that make you feel better? CheetahCrushingMachine energy

[-] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world -2 points 1 month ago

I don't really feel anything about it, honestly. I disagree with zoos, completely. Animal rehab and release is one thing, holding them captive is another. If there were no humans around, yeah, they would be likely be dead. Probably food for some other critter. That's nature, bro. Us intervening and applying human morals is arguably nature, too, but there is a lot more of "other" than us. We can't just leave the nature be, we gotta perturb it, exploit it, "save" it. It is one of the more disappointing things about humanity.

[-] Miaou@jlai.lu 4 points 1 month ago

Why do you think these animals need help in the first place?

[-] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

If you read carefully, you'll notice I never expressed that the animals need help. I said they shouldn't be held captive. It is more an indictment of the human than sympathy for the animal. Humans are mega entitled to just do whatever they want with animals. Humans suck.

[-] foggy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Yes excellent indictmen on humanst here: Humans save species by keeping the remaining few safe, and also socially comfortable with a supply of puppies.

Got em.

[-] okwhateverdude@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Let's be clear, they aren't saving anything by doing this. This is not conservation. They aren't breeding or reintroducing these particular animals to the wild after raising them in captivity. They have been extracted from the ecosystem. They are now pets. I wouldn't be so quick to pat humanity on the back when they are the proximate cause for there being a "remaining few."
