Wait until they feel ripe, but not overripe, then refrigerate. They will last far longer. Don’t refrigerate before they are ripe though; otherwise they will ripen weird, never have the right texture, and leak water when you cut them up.

Purchase in gradual steps: in one sitting, grab today's avocado, tomorrow's, next week's. They like to ripen in the sun and, unbruised and unripe, can sit on the windowsill for a week. Then, they can stay for 3 more days before they over-ripen. (I live in a humid climate, ymmv on this timeline)
