No, no they shouldn't.

Id rather they teach politicians about work.

[-] one_old_coder@piefed.social 18 points 2 weeks ago

And teach them woodworking to make their own caskets since they won't be able to afford one when they retire.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 14 points 2 weeks ago

And teach them how to scavenge for food because they won't be able to afford that either.

Even just with that picture they're already cementing traditional gender roles early on.

Yeah, if the real world were more like a Richard Scarry book, this would be great. But that's not how the world works, so no, don't give the children a tour of the mines.

Kids have to go to the institution everyday at the same time then leave the institution everyday at the same time. I think they are already learning a lot about work.

School is literally decades of preparation to get accustomized to being a wage slave. Change my mind.

Why is this bad? They keep asking children what job they'll do when they grow up but barely tell them which options there are

I think it's bad because these children are just entering the education system, and I think that framing education from the outset as "the purpose of this is to get a job / help the economy" is wrong. I'd like for children to have some time that is focused on education for its own sake. I think getting exposure to different jobs is fine, just that 4 years old is too early.

This is in the context of a report which the UK government asked Milburn to carry out, looking at how to increase employment among young people (18-25 year olds). So the framing is "how can we use the education system to get more people into a job", which I think turns schools even more into an employee factory.

I don't like it either but schools are exactly that, employee factories. And maybe to keep kids busy so parents can work.

Because there is a massive amount of PR and propaganda to "just accept" low paying jobs and being treated like shit.

The work they advertise and show "what is possible" isn't "owning a bank", or "being CEO". It's the local janitorial service showing how nice they are that they are paying 1$/€ whatever more than minimum wage.

Politicians saying that don't give a rat arse about what the work is actually like, all they see is tax revenue, economic activity going up and most importantly, young people not getting funny ideas about freedom and protests to demand it.

Like, have you never been to a career fair? It's bottom of the barrel stuff.

Same goes for private schools, right?

[-] abbiistabbii@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

Former minister Alan Milburn...

Of course it's the Tories. There seems to be a thing in the British Government about openly turning Education into a workers factory rather than a way to empower people and improve their lives.

He's a former Labour MP, but it was under Blair, so same difference :)
