Kemi Badenoch says those earning more than £100,000 should not be discouraged from working more

Take from the poor and give to the rich, I guess?

There will be those who say "Well that seems fair", and if all childcare was free at point of delivery like the NHS is (or should be - looking at you dentists... and squinting at you opticians) they might have a point. But the tories are not the ones who are going to do that, or at least not do it anywhere near right!

They can say a lot of things. They aren't going to form a government any time soon.

I think it's possible the next government could be a Reform/Tory coalition. I don't want that to happen, but I think it's possible.

I think we've been lucky to see Labour rise in the polls. This makes a progressive general election win more likely. Possibly a Labour/LibDem/SNP coalition. Possibly with Greens. The polls are in flux, it seems.

I wouldn't rule out a Reform/Tory government though. Hope for the best but expect the worst.

I can't see ~~Five~~ Seventy Two Mil Froggie being deputy to Badenoch. His ego would never allow it.

True, but the Tories could potentially be deputies to Reform. And Reform would perhaps keep the Tories' economic policies because both are parties run by rich people.

As a medium earner I can afford child care High earners can absolutely afford it

It should still be means tested but switched to means testing household income rather than individual income.

It has always massively pissed me off that you could have a couple each earning just under the threshold qualifying for the full amount and a single earner just over the end of the taper getting nothing, yet the net income for the couple is considerably higher not least because of two vs one tax free allowance and two lots of 20%.

This was also posted in a different irrelevant community that I commented on, so I'll paste the comment here too:

It sounds dumb, but there are plenty of people who I work with who cut back work hours to stay under 100k. They say the marginal tax rate on earning above 100k plus the loss of free childcare (which is 1000s of £) means you actually lose money. The rich shouldn't be given more money, but the benefits should decline linearly rather than drop off a cliff edge.

The insane part is that 2 spouses earning 90k each are much much better off than one earning 180k. The whole tax system can be pretty regressive in some ways.

Edit:

Also: Childcare is also fundamentally broken in this country. 2 children's part-time childcare cost us more than our mortgage on a monthly basis. Now the country is in this insane situation nationally where fertility rates are falling (partly because children are too expensive to raise), and people who want to work are kept out of work (the rich are cutting hours and the poor should never work if it means paying for childcare is more expensive than than the money they bring in).

They are right for the wrong reason. Any social policy that's not universal will always be at risk and lower quality.

Sure, that's the thing to concentrate on right now - giving high earners more money.

General Discussion for politics in the UK.
Please don't post to both !uk_politics@feddit.uk and !unitedkingdom@feddit.uk .
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric politics, and should be either a link to a reputable news source for news, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread. (These things should be publicly discussed)

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.
