The incident occurred at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, near Irkutsk [...] a “suspected case of a particularly dangerous infection affecting a resident of the region,”

Yeah, that's not alarming at all ...

an aluminum plant near the laboratory instructed staff to wear masks as a precautionary measure. [...] nearly 200 people were placed under observation at the hospital in Shelekhov [...] Quarantine has also been imposed in at least one of the city’s maternity hospitals [...] "even if [plague is] confirmed, there will be no spread of this disease,”

If this spreads and lockdowns and mask mandates come back, an entire portion of the US population will go actually, literally insane.

The Sun (which sucks, but often gets facts right underneath all the slanted coverage and yellow journalism) said

She was said to have become ill after breaking a test tube at Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute where she worked earlier this week.

They're already saying the quarantine there is to last for three weeks.

Despite there not being any other known current infections, Wikipedia's entry for the town of Shelekov now has a subsection for "2026 epidemic".

Guess I'll be poking at This Week In Virology again for a while ....

Thank you for your summary. I don’t want to try to alarm you any further, but another thing I suspect – which also happened in Wuhan during the initial outbreak – is that it’s already much worse than what they’re admitting right now.

As a side note, I think the ~~Anti~~ Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov can start removing some letters from the facade of their building.

They could replace them with "Trump."

Yes it makes no sense but it will once the Plague takes out 80% of the MAGA antimask antivaxxers.

And he'd love it. As long as you use gold letters

Put Trump's name on it.

– which also happened in Wuhan during the initial outbreak

Wuhan also had the countries largest wet markets where wild animals are gathered from hundreds of square kilometers and placed in cages to shit and piss on top of each other. This is where SARs/COV1 was proven to originate, and the reason why Wuhan had a research facility in the first place.

The rest is all Facebook/MAGA bullshit. China's fault lied in not regulating wet markets, which they still don't do, so the next SARs/COV will again come from China.

Please read the sentence again more carefully. I’m not talking about the lab leak theory. I’m talking about the fact that the Chinese authorities knew about the outbreak with an unknown respiratory virus for a long time and decided not to inform the WHO until the cat – or the bat, if you will – was already out of the bag and across the planet.

That has nothing to do with FB / MAGA conspiracy theories. It’s the official position of the WHO and US Congress. In fact, the Chinese didn’t even inform the WHO. The WHO had to find out through unofficial back channels and had to ask the Chinese government for verification themselves.

December 31: A machine translation of a Chinese media report about the outbreak is posted to ProMED, a U.S.-based open-access platform for early intelligence about infectious disease outbreaks. WHO headquarters in Geneva sees the ProMED post and instructs the WHO China Country Office to request verification of the outbreak from China's government. | The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission issues its first public statement on the outbreak, saying it has identified 27 cases.^1^

Patient 0 got sick on the 1st of December. And later the first known case was traced back to the 17th of November.^2^

Unknown vs known. She died fast. Other places report no new cases. People in Irkutsk say they lifted the quarantine. More to be investigated and need close look. As for now the situation is fine

[-] Photonic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

The situation is definitely not fine

[-] Photonic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Yes, that is what the Russians are telling everyone. Sorry, I’m not keeping my hopes up for Russian officials telling the truth. They knew what happened, they knew what she had, antibiotic treatment for it is widely available and they could have started them right away. Yet she died.

I don’t know the details of the experiments that were going on but if it is a resistant strain that would be very worrying indeed. It’s way too early to say everything is fine before we really know what happened. Only time will tell.

Trump isn't putting any mask mandate into place even if the rest of the world did it. The government wont test for it like it should be because then there is no way of knowing how rampant the lies is spreading.

while you are quoting,

“No micro-organisms associated with the employee’s professional duties were detected in samples taken from the patient,”

And, the plague was not caused by a virus.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

we have identified this patient died of "normal' pneumonia after being directly exposed to "super" pneumonia. we didn't find anything wrong, and do not ask any more questions.

[-] CombatWombat@feddit.online 22 points 3 days ago

Well that seems less than ideal

It is unclear exactly what was released, according to the state agency that handles infectious disease, Rospotrebnadzor. One person – a laboratory worker – is said to have died in the incident after being diagnosed with a pneumonia of “unknown” origin.

[-] GreenKnight23@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

we investigated ourselves and find no wrongdoing. we also identified nothing and have no evidence that anything was in the sealed labeled and cataloged test tube which was previously disposed of. the lab technician in question died of her own choice and has expressed remorse for damaging government property before their timely death.

The Andromeda Strain (1971)

A 2003 publication by the Infectious Diseases Society of America noted that The Andromeda Strain is the "most significant, scientifically accurate, and prototypic of all films of this [killer virus] genre ... it accurately details the appearance of a deadly agent, its impact, and the efforts at containing it, and, finally, the work-up on its identification and clarification on why certain persons are immune to it."

Someone get AI on the case, stat!

[-] Naz@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

Ok. The 2026 pandemic has been deleted from the timeline.

🌟🎉

This is a great time to watch Survivors (1975):

It concerns the plight of a group of people who have survived an apocalyptic plague pandemic, which was accidentally released by a Chinese scientist and quickly spread across the world via air travel. Referred to as "The Death", the plague kills approximately 4,999 out of every 5,000 human beings on the planet within a matter of weeks of being released.

Every time Trump gets elected, there's a plague.

it's almost like god is trying to send a message.

you know, if there was a god.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -3 points 2 days ago

The person died of pneumonia. There is zero evidence she got infected in the facility. People die of pneumonia every day.

“No micro-organisms associated with the employee’s professional duties were detected in samples taken from the patient,”

I case you comment without actually reading the article.
