Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver

The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the big AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”.

In an interview released on Monday, Altman was asked about how OpenAI’s approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic, which has called for the industry to slow down after one of its researchers quit, warning that AI experts believed “it could kill us all by the end of the decade”.

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman said. “One of the differences between us and some of the stricter AI safety people is that we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].

AI can be good without it being unethical, but for some reason most AI companies (especially in the US) don't care for ethics

[-] adhdsergio@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

How about you accept some bad things first, scam altman

What if AI mysteriously decides to render every billionaire on the planet penniless, Sam? Just for bits 'n' giggles. Is that some of the 'good stuff' you're on about?

What benefits?

Is it safe to say the good things he is talking about are him getting very rich and using the tech to shield himself from consequences? And the bad things will happen to everyone else?

[-] SStennissteve@retrolemmy.com 5 points 16 hours ago

Hey Sam I have some bad outcomes I'd like you to accept for foisting your profit driven scheme upon us. Come over here and I'll show you what I have in mind.

[-] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago

I mean if we have to suffer a version of France in 1793 because of AI, I'm very much okay with that then.

Glad we agree there Mr. Altman.

[-] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 5 points 19 hours ago

I can think of a few bad things for Sam to accept.

If you want to make an omelette, you're going to have to break a couple eggs. The eggs are yours, by the way. And the omelette is going to destroy your house when I cook it. And I'm not going to pay you for anything. In fact, pay me for the eggs.

[-] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 9 hours ago

“Eat shit so I can profit” - Altman

[-] SparroHawc@lemmy.zip 46 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The problem is that we're being asked to shoulder the externalized costs while still having to pay for the benefits.

Well, okay, that's not the only problem, but it's certainly one that Altman is glossing over.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 58 points 1 day ago

He can't even articulate a point. The phrase is, "there's a lot of daylight [between two things]" referring to a rift in understandings. You don't just say "there's a lot of daylight", that just means it's daytime.

[-] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 52 points 1 day ago

He uses AI all the time, he's shared many stories of his daily usage of it.

It's surprising he can even still form an independent thought tbh.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago

he replaced his brain with AI chips, borrowed from Zuckerborgs android.

Sounds a lot like what Charlie Kirk said about guns…

"Many of you will die, and that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make!"

[-] ryper@lemmy.ca 43 points 1 day ago

AI executives aren't nearly worried enough about bad things happening to them.

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I feel like this is a bit like Charlie Kirk saying we had to accept a few gun deaths were acceptable for having the 2nd amendment. Easy thing to say, until you have a bullet in your neck.

These AI CEOs are fine with bad things happening to other people. Their tune would be different if they were affected.

What are the benefits, Sam?

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 24 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He didn't say they're benefits for us. There are plenty of benefits for Sam. And we're a sacrifice he's willing to make.

[-] Zahille7@lemmy.world 27 points 1 day ago

Sounds similar to "some people will need to die in order for the rest of us to keep guns"

Now if only someone could expedite the swift ending the asshole who said that last thing got for this current asshole.

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 15 points 1 day ago

Altman needs to be thrown, bodily, into an active volcano

Yeah so that he can enrich himself. Hope your AI bites you in the ass Altman.

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 11 points 1 day ago

Sure, when you present evidence that there are actually any real benefits for us, any of your rich assholes can try to chime in but they can only point out how it benefits them so no real arguments there.

Currently you're just a snake oil salesman so FUCK OFF!!

[-] Greyghoster@aussie.zone 1 points 12 hours ago

They should just go to prison for stealing data / work of people. They knowingly used illegally obtained data to “train” off of.
