Boss of OpenAI calls for a regulatory light touch because of the ‘good stuff’ the technology can deliver

The chief executive of OpenAI cited hacks, scams and “other bad things that will happen” in an interview that sparked an instant backlash from critics of the big AI companies. His comments came after one of his company’s safety experts resigned, saying at the weekend that its “culture is broken”.

In an interview released on Monday, Altman was asked about how OpenAI’s approach to safety differed from that of Anthropic, which has called for the industry to slow down after one of its researchers quit, warning that AI experts believed “it could kill us all by the end of the decade”.

“I think there’s a lot of daylight,” Altman said. “One of the differences between us and some of the stricter AI safety people is that we believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency [to use AI widely].

Why’d they put the quotation marks around “bad things” instead of “benefits of ai?”

"Bad things now for good things later" is the oldest scam in the book.

That's exactly the same logic that gets people to send their money to fake Nigerian princes with the promise they'll be rewarded with riches later.

So many times have I heard of a major crime that a bank, or financial institution commit, and think about how I heard about the scam first on runescape.

The most impressive scam they got me with was a merch clan. They essentially told us to buy a item that's the equivalent of game stop stock (ring of stone) at max price and hold, while rug pulling us. Items changed value at timed intervals based on recent trades, and that item was very infrequently made, and no one wanted it so the trade volume was super low and manipulatable. We made the price go up and they sold us the item that's now worth less then what we bought it for because everyone else is underselling it trying to dump it instantly.

Best scams always are time sensitive and work off your own greed to make you look past the glaring red flags.

Breaking news: Thieves say victims should accept stealing in return for its benefits.

The possibilities are truly limitless—Moving forward with intention—paradigm shift in the marketplace—as a chance to iterate and improve—create powerful synergy—Empowering teams with the right tools. User-centric design principles—Together, these elements create a powerful flywheel—while continuing to evolve. And human-centric design—how exciting this journey can be—both future-ready and impact-driven.

It's not just a game-changing technology — it's a productivity revolution disguised as innovation

Plus, one lucky person will become a quadrillionaire! Just think, it could be you!! 🤞

We’ve asked the AI and - oh, this is a little embarrassing! - it says the most worthy candidate for this unique opportunity is none other than Sam Altman himself. Please understand that he’d normally decline out of modesty, but the AI knows best so it really wouldn’t be right to defy it…

Someone make this guy a middle manager

The industry ready capabilities combined with agile methodology will allow AI to hit the ground running.

Why don’t you love your local restaurants’ Cronenberg-style posters?!

[-] criss_cross@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I love the amount of nonsense communications I receive from coworkers.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago

I have two types of coworkers: emails that are 1-2 sentences followed by optional "cheers", and emails that are 12 pages long of indecipherable AI bullshit.

I only read one of these.

No thanks. I'd rather have Google Assistant back and Gemini can fuck off forever. I just wanted to set timers and navigate hands free, but Gemini seems to find ways to fuck up even the simplest stuff that Assistant could reliably do, even offline!

This is the "AI" experience in nutshell: Shit is straight up broken and unreliable compared to what we had before from search to digital assistants to what should be basic apps we need to use.

In no appreciable way has "AI" improved my life, but it has definitely made everything way more expensive, caused massive harm to the environment, and is literally making people who use it stupid. What benefits is this asshole talking about!?

Turns out basing computers on logic and math is way more useful than bullshit and hallucinations. Especially since we've made our entire industrial system dependent on them functioning well and consistently.

Did you know we used a computer running on kilobytes of data to make it to the moon? The fucking MOON.

Could you imagine a world where Microsoft didn't recommend 16gigs of ram so that their spyware can take screen shots of your screen, and sniff your panties for what ever data it can find.

[-] _haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works -1 points 17 hours ago

I will say, LLM does have some legitimate uses, but the "AI" garbage being crammed into every conceivable thing is aggressively stupid.

[-] daggermoon@piefed.world 8 points 19 hours ago

It seems convenient for him that he is one of those bad things.

The interview The Guardian is referring to (but doesn't name) is likely the one he did with Politico. That was posted in this community a few hours ago.

I think we're doing way too many Springer "information" lately. And they didn't even include the actual interview.

[-] WolvenSpectre@lemmy.ca 6 points 20 hours ago

Hmmm, ask Charlie Kirk about how that worked out for him.

I think you meant to say SI

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
