The decision not to invite observers from the OSCE puts the U.S. alongside Russia and Belarus, while the Justice Department prepares to deploy its own poll monitors.

The Trump administration declined to invite election observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe to witness the midterms, blocking monitors from the regional security group for the first time in more than two decades.

Their absence comes as Democrats and election integrity experts have raised concerns about potential election meddling after the Department of Justice announced plans to send its own monitors.

Washington joins only Russia and Belarus in its decision to exclude OSCE observers.

The OSCE called the U.S. decision “regrettable” and Human Rights Watch said the move “fuels fears of serious human rights concerns around the upcoming elections.”

What's being done to counter this?

People are whining about it on the Internet! That counts just a bit more than thoughts and prayers.

tell me you are going to commit voting fraud without actually telling me you are going to commit voting fraud

[-] mangobanana@discuss.online 6 points 3 hours ago

They already have and the fucking Democrats sat on their hands and said nothing. Kamela should have never accepted defeat she should have fought it all the way to the supreme Court. He absolutely did not win fairly him and musk said many times that they cheated

[-] abcdqfr@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

Americans can be bought. Even the Dems. America has been sold to the lowest bidders.

[-] radiofreebc@lemmy.world 10 points 5 hours ago

At this point, they could tell Americans they're going to commit voter fraud, and Americans wouldn't do shit about it.

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Im 1000 miles from the nearest place i could do anything about it. What exactly would you like me to do?

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 hours ago

I would like the American government to enforce its laws and remove Trump from office yesterday

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 3 points 4 hours ago

Organize for a National labor strike

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 hours ago

He outright told people to cheat

[-] adein@lemmy.ml 12 points 6 hours ago

My feeling is that they are trying to increase their ability to (falsely) claim that the elections were stolen (again). I would think having outside observers would be something you'd want to get rid of so that it's easier to convince people of the lie/scam/coup.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 4 points 5 hours ago

U.S. elections are very robust especially compared to other western democracies' systems. That won't stop him from trying or even having some effect.

[-] zbyte64@awful.systems 8 points 4 hours ago

Robust? I remember when the Supreme Court elected Bush as president.

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today -1 points 3 hours ago

In an extremely close election, yes

This country has been through worse

[-] mangobanana@discuss.online 2 points 3 hours ago

I'm starting to think not, record high fuel prices both Diesel and unleaded, food prices for people are unable to even buy basic protein anymore, housing so out of reach most people can't afford to buy a house, and even used cars are going for $10,000 plus when they should be $2,000. Corporations are squeezing every dime out of us and most Americans are one to two paychecks away from being homeless. But sure let's elect Trump again he's doing such a fucking bang-up job of ruining this country, maybe if he gets elected a third term will be completely a third world country by the time he's done

[-] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

That's the electorate, not the elections.

Americans, watching Trump actively rig the election

[-] ContriteErudite@lemmy.world 13 points 7 hours ago

MAGAs in my family are so far lost in the sauce that they truly believe he's the most fair and honest president in American history. They are so caught up in the right wing news machine that they don't know how the regime's policies are affecting the rest of America, and if they did, I don't think they'd care because they're old, rich, and have winning complexions.

[-] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

Say it with me, America.

We.

Are.

Fucked.

“Refusing election observers is usually something that countries in a position of weakness do, when they know that they have corrupt or unfair elections,” said Dan Baer, a former U.S. ambassador to the OSCE during the Obama administration. “It’s very strange for the United States, which has been historically a standard setter in free and fair elections, to refuse observers.”

[-] RichardDegenne@lemmy.zip 15 points 10 hours ago

Strange? Has this doofus been around for the past 6 years?

[-] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 53 points 12 hours ago

What boggles the mind is Trump's followers will not see the glaring hypocrisy here, assuming they hear about this at all.

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 37 points 12 hours ago

A conservative is a fascist. That's why it is not possible for them to see anything wrong with fascist moves. Even never-Trumper conservatives will support this, because all conservatives are fascist by nature.

[-] nao@sh.itjust.works 4 points 8 hours ago

or rather fascists like to call themselves conservatives, even though they're not

“Raised concerns”

That’ll help. Well done.

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 59 points 13 hours ago

Why can't states call for OSCE monitors? States are in charge of elections, not the Fed, and certainly not the Fed DOJ.

[-] NABDad@lemmy.world 6 points 6 hours ago

I suspect if they tried, the OSCE monitors wouldn't be allowed to enter the US.

[-] Atelopus-zeteki@fedia.io 1 points 51 minutes ago

Seems worth trying. Facists need pushback.

Nothing says "integrity" like evading 3rd-party, external auditors.

[-] group_hug@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Completely legit just like Tether. Trust me bro.

[-] Goodeye8@piefed.social 4 points 7 hours ago

I thought integrity was publicly out the window when there was a PSA about getting $5000 if you vote a certain way.

The million dollar check promises during the last one already happened.

Washington joins only Russia and Belarus in its decision to exclude OSCE observers.

oh yeah, this isn't concerning at all; look who we're joining, absolute bastions of democracy.

Won't someone rid us of this meddlesome oompa loompa?

[-] mangobanana@discuss.online 1 points 2 hours ago

Unfortunately he is but a puppet for those who are really running things, namely those who wrote project 2025. Trump is but a symptom of the corruption in the government. He is manipulated to help and basically being told what to say. He is a moron but those who are really in charge are running things

Conservatism is fascism. Always has been. These fascists need to be erased in a permanent way.

It is immoral to keep any relationship with a conservative. Disown them. Delete them.
