Daylight savings time causes accidents on the road and in workplaces as people are thrown off by the sleep pattern changes.

6-12% increase in car accidents and 6% increase in workplace accidents during the week following the time change.

It’s also been proven to increase heart attacks, and other health issues as well.

And as someone who worked as a CNA in memory care for a few years, I can also testify that it fucks with people with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

I hated working shifts the first week of a time change because it never failed that we’d have multiple code calls, and agitated patients.

Right... they're not saying make no changes.

Permanent DST is the bad choice, permanent standard time should be the change. Health professionals and researchers have said this every time this is brought up, but for whatever reason the politicians always want to go with the shitty choice.

[-] Master@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Those professionals can go fuck themselves... In the dark cause itll be dark if they get their way.

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 1 day ago

No. Permanent dlst is the good choice. Getting home at 5pm after it's already dark sucks ass for kids and adults both.

[-] Janx@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

So... it would be dark before/after work even more than our current system where we change it 2x every year? Fuck that.

[-] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

Or you know they could just change the hours things are open. There's no reason things need to be open hours like 9-5 specifically.

[-] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 5 points 1 day ago

Permanent dst would fix problems caused by the change.

[-] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

So would permanent standard time, but with fewer side effects.

Canadian health researchers are urging the country to choose permanent standard time over permanent daylight saving time if it ends the twice-yearly clock change, warning that darker winter mornings could harm sleep and mental health.

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

I think a 30 minute change would clear it all up. Halfway between both times would half any positives or negatives.

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah.... The change. That's why dlst should be permanent. No more getting home and having it already be dark outside.

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 1 day ago

Analyst can piss off. I want permanent dlst.

Maybe trying to cram invented units and regimented behavior into a naturally varying but predictable system was a bad idea.

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

So what do you want? "I start work at sunrise". What's your solution here that doesn't use invented units?

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Maybe we let people have more flexibility. Stop thinking that we all need to dance at the same time like a bunch of puppets.

[-] warbond@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

We might have to dismantle a few things first

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Excellent. I have a list ready.

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

That's fair. My work lets me start anytime between 7 and 9, it shouldn't be an advantage but required by law when feasible imo. Your comment sounded more like doing away with the notion of time as a unit more than anything else though.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That is my goal but I realize it’s only achievable on a personal level.

But let schools start later in the winter so kids aren’t up before dawn, let folks have flexible start times so they can get the sleep they need, that sort of thing.

This at least helps treat the mental symptoms that come from being treated like a machine while not being one.

[-] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 1 points 1 day ago

Yes exactly start work sunrise +1h, end work dusk -1h or 9h later which ever is shorter. We are humans not machines.

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Tbh though, with how all our phones are connected to the net, we could probably have a rolling daylight savings. So add 4 minutes or wtv amount every week to keep the sunrise hour always the same. So your start time would always be sun stable so to speak.

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

That’s a very broad and stupid take. That basically implies all measurements of nature should be thrown out the window. We need something to base things by for uniformly and understanding across people.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yes we do now and since we’re in the trap maybe we stop struggling and let people start work later in the winter instead of flopping hours back and forth.

Adding flexibility will likely reduce negative health outcomes more than either strategy to attempt to line up a fake thing like the “hour” to a real thing like the sun.

But my actual, personal solution will be never to use hours or minutes again someday.

[-] timeghost@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

We got weekends. We got 40 hour weeks. We can get summer and winter hours. Less daylight, less work. No time change. Sleep in. Come home early. No sun, we're done. Time to play video games, make your partner come, work on a personal hobby, enjoy your life.

[-] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Let's meet when the sun is at 20 degrees, gotta be at work before 50 degrees.

I can see this working for some people

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Humans shouldn’t need any more time precision than hand-widths from the horizon.

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 1 points 1 day ago

50 degrees where you are right now, or where your workplace is?

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Please: Permanent standard time so that we have a consistent baseline that aligns with better health outcomes and with IANA conventions, plus regulation to guarantee a legal minimum number of daylight hours before/after work.

[-] TBi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Totally agree. I like that kids can walk to school while it’s bright, even in depths of winter.
