You haven't been paying attention. Apple has ads on their 3 OS. MacOS: iCloud, iOS: ads in maps and iCloud, AppleTV: ads for music and videos services in the launcher.

You can even get ads in Linux or at least you used to. I dont know if Ubuntu still does that.

[-] lost_faith@lemmy.ca 7 points 13 hours ago

Kubuntu does not, thankfully. last time I used Ubuntu was headless as a server 10+ years ago, Gnome didn't support VR when I decided on Kubuntu

Technically, you get an ad for their Expanded Security Maintenance when logging into a headless Ubuntu server. This can be removed by disabling the esm repo, but still: One of the first things you see when logging into an unmodified Ubuntu server is an ad.

Why is macOS the middle dapper Pooh? Surely it should be swapped with Linux

Apple users think the price of the products makes them better.

Meme template abuse.

People love to force their jokes onto templates whether it fits or not lol

Apple: discontinues hardware support after 3 years, makes you pay them again.

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 3 points 13 hours ago

Outside maybe one specific model owing to the Intel-Apple Silicon transition, that is broadly not true. Apple generally supports hardware longer than its other composition (Linux notwithstanding, of course.)

[-] BluescreenOfDeath@lemmy.world 6 points 12 hours ago

They also go out of their way to make their devices more expensive for no real reason.

Apple doesn't use custom tech for those SSDs. They're still normal NVMe drives using the exact same controllers on the motherboard and the drive. They just rearranged the physical connector so you can't easily swap in a non-apple replacement (and save hundreds of dollars doing so).

This is a hill I will die on. Apple is anti-consumer, but they're cool so it's whatever apparently.

[-] fonix232@fedia.io 2 points 11 hours ago

That's wholly incorrect.

Apple moved the controller to the SoC. The drives aren't NVMe drives, they're raw NAND carrier boards...

[-] BluescreenOfDeath@lemmy.world -1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

If that was the case,

Then the NVMe adapters that convert standard m.2 NVMe drives to the Apple SSD pinout wouldn't work. Things like this:

1000003090

But they do, because the apple silicone is expecting to talk to an NVMe controller in the SSD with the same communications protocols.

Unless you've got some technical documentation to back that up?

Bruh... 2016-17. That's NOT Apple Silicon 🤦‍♂️

[-] fonix232@fedia.io 2 points 11 hours ago

Even the latest x86 model released in 2019, got the 2026 Golden Gate release of macOS. That's 7 years of support.

Apple hate is so strong that even when it's not justified, people justify it. Of course, it's also sometimes justified.

I was stupid enough to pay Microsoft $200 for a windows Pro license 7 years ago. Then, it was basically impossible to release it from one machine and activate it on the other. FUck slmgr. So I ended up using whatever activation program that's named after construction material... which clearly is what I should have done in the first place. THEN they pulled a sleazy trick to upgrade my machine from 10 to 11, disguising it as a regular Windows update. Thank god I don't even have access to that machine any longer. Um... it does have 32 GB of RAM though and I kind of want to get it back.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

Windows is free without ads if your doing it right. Unless you need it for certain niche software I don't know why you would bother.

[-] nexguy@lemmy.world 2 points 13 hours ago

Just saying, you do not have to pay for windows. Just don't activate it. Virtually nothing gained by activating it.

[-] j5y7@sh.itjust.works 2 points 12 hours ago

You gain a big brother if you activate.
