You shouldn’t be able to try again. Execute the Epstein pedophiles government!!

[-] frustrated_phagocytosis@fedia.io 38 points 23 hours ago

If you survive an execution attempt it should be considered cruel and unusual punishment to try again. Obviously you got a pass from the grim reaper, life in prison for you.

[-] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 11 points 15 hours ago

With our fucked up system, she can probably sue the state for cruel and unusual punishment, win a judgement, and then be executed by the same system before she can collect it.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 4 points 21 hours ago

I agree, I hope a judge sees it that way too

What absolutely shitty self-proclaimed Christians btw.

Thou shalt not kill*

*Some exclusions apply. Lots of exclusions apply. Actually just go ahead, it's okay.

[-] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca -2 points 15 hours ago

Translation into modern English is "You shall not murder." I'm not using that as a defense here, though, and what qualified as murder then vs. now is a whole other topic.

[-] Taldan@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

If the meaning of the word "murder" is substantially different, your pedantic correction is moot

[-] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 1 points 4 hours ago

Some people equate murder and killing. Some people don't equate murder and killing in self-defense. Some people don't equate government-sanctioned killings as murder - certainly governments don't.

If you believe any killing is murder, then "Thou shalt not kill" and "You shall not murder" are the same. If you agree with the general consensus, then they are substantially different.

I oppose the death penalty. Not because it's immoral. I think it's fine and good to kill criminals like Tim McVeigh or Dylan Roof. I just don't trust government and courts to be competent enough.

The State of South Carolina lynched George Stinny, a 14yo boy, in the electric chair. 50 years later, Susan Smith somehow escaped the same fate.

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

Lynched in an Electric Chair sounds like the name of a post punk industrial band.

[-] Corvidae@lemmy.world 12 points 23 hours ago

There have been a bunch of failed executions with the electric chair, it has also been characterized as "cruel and unusual".

Double jeopardy should play a role here.

[-] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 2 points 15 hours ago

Double jeopardy is about the trial not the sentencing

Nitrogen is the only way to go. Fast, effective, humane, safe (for others), and efficient.

[-] the_q@piefed.social 19 points 1 day ago

But the suffering is the point.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 6 points 20 hours ago

That's why they botch nitrogen executions so badly that the person basically suffocates to death

[-] GreyEyedGhost@piefed.ca 0 points 15 hours ago

Nitrogen, with CO2 flushed away so you don't feel like you're suffocating, with sedative so you can't resist breathing very well. And now we've devised a humane way to engage in a barbaric act.

I guess she might get that all-female firing squad that she asked for.
