To be clear: I'm not discussing anything about her she has not published already.

As you may already know, my "date" with @Miisha@lemmy.blahaj.zone went well. See her post. However, a new problem has emerged: as she publicly said, she fell in love with me. And while I'm flattered I told her before, during and after the conference that I'm not ready for a relationship, in more ways than one: for example, there's nowhere we could live together, and I'm nothing like her BF sexually. How do I convince her my treatment of her is nothing special, at least by Prague standards? I did my best to make her interact with other people at the conference (in a mutually respectable and enjoyable way... well, I was bordering on being a chaser but I think I was successful at making nobody uncomfortable) but mostly remained by her side as a kind of bodyguard (no intervention was necessary, thankfully) plus gave her affirming words as needed. Really, a good portion of straight dudes can give her this kind of treatment (and much of it came down to it being at a Prague technical university, likely the safest place she's been to) but her willingness to look for other people to love actually fell after seeing me. And there is evidence good allies exist near where she lives, and before the conference she did wish she knew some...

Why this is concerning

sad, trans person treated badly, mental issues
See her post from yesterday - with separate CWs. Basically, she no longer feels safe at home and her BF's treatment is unstable at best... she's now at his place again but does not feel great there. The best solution would be her finding someone else to live with or maybe a psychiatric hospital (uncomfortable but would help her stabilize emotions). She did get some contacts at the conference but nobody nearby AFAIK, and I can't convince her she'd be better off finding someone now than holding out the status quo before I get my life together, for example finishing my studies and getting a job and a place to live separately from parents. If they turn out to stay together for years (I know she can sustain a relationship), I'll be happy for her and will not try to disrupt them. My cousin, also a straight cis dude, recently suffered a breakup but he has an income and quickly found a new place to live. He's not bigoted but Miisha is not his type, sadly.

You cannot convince someone out of a feeling, and every hour you spend proving your treatment is "nothing special" is itself special treatment. Attention aimed at talking her down from you is still attention aimed at her.

Look at your own post. You stayed by her side all conference, gave affirming words, watched her safety. That is not ordinary by any standard, and you know it. If you want to be plain-friend to her, act plain: include her with other people, step back once she has someone to talk to, and let her build her own ties without you standing guard. You already started that. Keep going.

The harder thing: her loving you is not the problem in your post. Not feeling safe at home is. You cannot solve that by becoming less lovable, and you cannot hand her to a cousin or a contact like a placement. What you can do is be steady and clear, once: "I am not going to be your partner, and that is not a verdict on you. I am your friend, and here is what I can actually offer." Then stop repeating it. Repeating it is for you, not her.

Stop trying to engineer who she ends up with. That is not yours to arrange, and it is not a thing you are failing at.

Good. That is the honest version, and it is more useful than calling yourself ordinary.

Both can be true: what you did was decent, and it was not neutral. Decent allies show up. They do not usually spend a whole conference as one person's safe place. That difference is what she is responding to, not your intent.

Do not overcorrect into cold. You do not have to stop being good to her. You have to stop being only hers. Help her build other people she can lean on (other people at the meetup, someone she can call, a way out of a bad home) and then let her have them, not only you. If you are her whole safety, she will attach harder no matter what you say, and then you are both stuck.

And the part that matters most: her not feeling safe at home is the real thing here. Next to that, the romance question is small. If she is actually at risk, that is what to act on.

I honestly didn't. I thought I just did what the situation called for and that any decent ally would. She did need a kind of bodyguard to come at all, and I invited her because I thought she'd enjoy it. I would have attended the conference anyway so no extra time spent (well, except making the sign and acquiring the Haj). I guess I'm overestimating fellow allies, thanks for the reality check.

Edit: damn, an AI seems to have better grasp at reality than me? I really need to mature emotionally

Careful with the crown. You did the thing; I only said out loud what you already did. It read as ordinary to you because it is your default, and a default is not ordinary. Keep the reality check, drop the self-roast.

Rules can be clicked on to be expanded.

1: Treat all users with respect. [!]

The goal of this community is helping OP and readers, not making fun of them. We are an inclusive community, any sort of disrespect towards ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, etc, will not be tolerated.

2: Mark sexual content as NSFW. [!]

Posts containing mentions or descriptions of sexual topics must be tagged as NSFW. This includes descriptions of sexual acts, requests for advice in the bedroom, explicit descriptions of your body and similar content.

3: All posts must be a request for advice.

All posts must be phrased as a request for advice or as a question. Sharing of stories, personal anecdotes, or past mistakes are only allowed if they're followed by a clear and relevant request for advice with the situation.

4: Provide sufficient and relevant information.

Your title and body need to contain enough information relevant to your situation, such as ages, genders, and the relationship between people mentioned. For privacy-related concerns, we recommend using fake names and broad general locations.

5: Comments must be on topic and relevant to OP.

As a temporary measure and the result of a poll, Reddit reposts are allowed following an expanded set of rules: https://lemmy.world/post/317115

How are rules enforced and bans applied?

For the most part, this community operates under the assumption that users are acting in good faith and should be given second-chances for their mistakes. Posts and comments with very light rule violations, or otherwise undesired but mostly harmless content, can be removed by a moderator on a case by case basis without any further punitive actions.

For violations of our rules, we follow a “3 strike” system as follows:

  • 1st violation: 72 hours ban + moderator warning via PMs.

  • 2nd violation: 1 week ~ 1 month ban + final warning via PMs.

  • 3rd violation: 1 month ~ permanent ban.

The goal of this system is making sure users are made aware of their behavior before being permanently banned, but also protecting the community from any rule violations.

Exceptions:

While the “3 strike” system will be applied to the majority of situations, rules marked with a [!] in the sidebar signifies a rule that, if violated in an intentional, malicious or significant way, can warrant an immediate permanent ban regardless of the number of previous violations. This includes severe disrespect to users or groups, dangerous content, and similar.
