Christa Pike was “angry and confused” in the hours after regaining consciousness following Tennessee’s failed execution attempt, first asking, “Where am I?” her lawyer said Wednesday.

Pike, believed to be the first person to survive after receiving lethal injection drugs during an execution, stunningly woke up as plans were being made to remove her from life support, just six days after she was strapped to a gurney in the death chamber, said attorney Randy Spivey.

“But on Tuesday, to the shock of everyone ... Christa woke up and began talking,” Spivey said.

You died. Welcome to hell. It's the same as when you were alive.

[-] SirEDCaLot@lemmy.today 13 points 3 days ago

Only now your arms and body are fucked up and in constant pain. This is way better!

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 66 points 3 days ago

It's not clear from the article if she's angry at what happened (rightly) or angry and confused as a state of conciousness.

When my dad regained conciousness from a stroke he was angry and confused for days. He's an absolute sweetie and had to be tied down.

[-] Asafum@lemmy.world 50 points 3 days ago

I'd be pissed too especially because if I recall correctly she requested a different method of execution which was denied and then they went and fucked this up. :/

[-] Hegar@fedia.io 83 points 3 days ago

The state was made aware well in advance of this that she had a medical condition that was going to prevent the lethal injection from working.

They knew that this was the only possible outcome but went ahead anyway because performative cruelty is the core conservative value.

[-] EatMyPixelDust@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 3 days ago

If only someone would perform cruelty on them.

[-] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 days ago

Get me enough people willing to go along with me to make it more than a fancy way to commit suicide and I'll volunteer enthusiastically.

[-] rozodru@piefed.world 23 points 3 days ago

I mean if it were me and I knew I was going be killed for years and then the day comes and it doesn't go to plan I'd be pissed as well. I would have had time to prepare for my fate, to accept it, and then days later wake up in a hospital bed cause they fucked it up? yeah man, that would rightly piss me off. So what now? they try again? just keep her in prison for the rest of her life instead? I don't condone her crimes but she's got every right to be pissed like you said.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 17 points 3 days ago

It's more than that. Imagine sitting 20yrs in a room, never knowing if it is THIS week you'd finally die. Or maybe the next. This is just torture. Civilized nations don't do that, no matter if this cunt actually deserves it or not (which is debatable). That is personal, and humans tend to do personal things. But nations should not.

If you want to see a Nation's level of development, look at how they treat the poor, the animals and their incarcerated.

[-] skeezix@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I thought she’d be electrified.

[-] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 22 points 3 days ago

They were trying to finish the job too, trying to get life support removed.

Someone surviving a botched execution is a nightmare for a death penalty state.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago

They should just say it was God's will that she survived and move on.

[-] Theoriginalthon@lemmy.world 52 points 3 days ago

Come on America clearly she repented and god came in and saved her, where are all the religious types claiming she's jesus reincarnated

[-] skeezix@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Make no assumptions until youve walked a green mile in her shoes.

[-] SecretiveVault@lemmy.zip 24 points 3 days ago

Sky Daddy has spoken

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 38 points 3 days ago

They took their shot, and they missed. To try to execute her again would be Cruel & Unusual. She shouldn't be released, but her sentence should be commuted to Life without Parole.

[-] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 50 points 3 days ago

Why without parole? She clearly needed therapy before she committed the murder, why keep denying it now? If she reaches a state where she is no danger to others, she should have a chance to try and rehabilitate. Her victim never had a chance, but two wrongs don't make a right.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 22 points 3 days ago

Why without parole?

The American prison system is a business. It has no room in the budget for compassion, and no KPIs relate to wellness or rehab. Into the oubliette with her!

[-] scutiger@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Prisoners on death row only cost money, so it makes sense, business-wise, to release her.

[-] MrOtingocni@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

Costs who money?

[-] Mighty_Appititey@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

But three lefts do

[-] skeezix@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

There are other arguments to be made in the same vein

[-] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago

Supreme court cases have solved this unfortunately she is still to be executed unless her sentence is commuted.

[-] nexguy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Or a moratorium is placed on the death penalty.

[-] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 1 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Hopefully she sues and it takes years to resolve.

And the courts block her execution until the case is resolved

And when it is resolved the fever dream that is MAGA republicans in power is once again over and a moratorium on the death penalty is once again in place

[-] Eat_Your_Paisley@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

Didn't work the last time this happened and won't work this time.

[-] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 days ago

They should just give her a dark tan and call ICE. She’d be dead within the hour

[-] Honse@lemmy.dbzer0.com 29 points 3 days ago

Yeah the lawsuit just got way worse for the defense. Yikes what a mess. How do you even fuck it up this monumentally

[-] MelodiousFunk@slrpnk.net 33 points 3 days ago

Ignore experts and press on for the sake of cruelty?

[-] skeezix@lemmy.world 0 points 3 days ago

They have enough problems, no need to needle them about it

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

That’s nuts. I thought for sure she was a veggie.

They really shouldn’t try to kill her again.

[-] ClownStatue@piefed.social 20 points 3 days ago

Decent people would tend to agree with you. Good luck finding a decent person amongst Tennessee republicans.

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Yeah I imagine I'd be pretty pissed off too
