Im preaching to the choir with this, but I think its relevant for context: The reasons Im not using windows are ads, tracking, forced updates, AI "features", automatic reversion of your uninstalls/settings after updates, slow/buggy/bloated/vibe coded. These things are enough of an issue for me to the point that if an alternative didnt exist, I would not have a PC. That means linux and its future are a pretty big deal to me. Weve already seen some give into age attestation (shoutout to agelesslinux.org), there are debates being had about development practices (vibe coding), debates about incorporating AI slop features (weve already lost firefox there), hardware attestation would regretfully see some compliance given how age attestation went, etc. Does anyone else worry about the path linux could be on?

The biggest worry I see is laws appearing all over the world that demand ID verification, surveillance features or encryption backdoors that Linux developers and distributors aren't in a position to comply with. If it becomes a legal liability to oversee or contribute to a Linux distro, only those with the deepest pockets to pay lawyers will dare do so, and there will be intense pressure to corporatize its distribution. They won't be able to undo open-source licenses for existing code, but if using or distributing that code still gets you sued it could be a problem for all independent actors.

I think most of those issues were overblown. I don’t really want to argue them here, but I do not lose sleep over those issues, as the headlines on them were sensationalized.

I am worried about legal/compliance complications, especially as Linux gets more mainstream and the world leans more “tech bro authoritarian.” Linux is definitely on a path of colliding with corporate interests, which is a dangerous place to be.

I just worry about the future in general

Linux is fine.

If you wanna avoid LLM's all up in your kernel then leave, Linus has put his foot down on this months back and the kernel is knee deep in llm's, and powering much of the ecosystem.

If operating systems need verification the linux ecosystem seems well placed to avoid this with LFS, Gentoo, Toybox and many more being kits to build your own.

If Linux does get drowned in twats and turns into some kinda IBM powered Steam machine then the BSD's are waiting.

if you wanna avoid LLMs then leave

how very tech bro of you
i bet quite a lot of people would leave if it were an option. in fact, isn't that why most of us are here on the Fediverse

There's bigger things to worry about atm, so no, not really.

Kinda, but not really. It is possible that eventually the slop will take over many great distros and projects, but the anti- or even sane-AI folk will just do their own new projects.

Age limits don't seem like a reall risk with open-source projects, but I have already decided that I will not partake if it goes to that.. I won't post my ID to be able to see memes, I'll just let go. I got my offline games, old consoles, DVDs, books, board games etc.

not anymore, i have begun reading the openbsd man pages. a schizophrenic man told me to do it fifteen years ago, which puts it at right about the correct time for me to listen to him

Linus Torvalds arguing he should be able to let LLMs contribute to the Linux kernal has me worried. I left Microslop because of their slop machines, if Linus wants them that badly I'll have to leave linux too

[-] BritishPork@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I don't think he's arguing. He doesn't 'want it badly', he has it, the kernel has it, it's not going away.

He couldn't really be much clearer: If you have an issue with it then leave, or do the open source thing and fork the kernel instead of:

"But the solution is not to put your head in the sand and sing "La La La, I can't hear you" at the top of your voice like some people seem to do."

[-] awmwrites@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 days ago

Okay, I'll leave linux then.

(openbsd fits in your head if you try hard enough)

I just really hope they're having knowledgeable humans carefully review those contributions, as ever.

I don't really care where the code came from (though I am a bit concerned about copyright issues making open source licenses no longer enforceable) -- but I just want it to work and work well ... which a lot of AI code doesn't. I would be very sad if the Linux kernel itself becomes a bloated, inefficient, buggy, slop-filled mess.
