US President Donald Trump said Friday that Russia had agreed to immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to US and global markets in an effort to cut fuel prices before November's midterm elections. The move marks a stunning change of policy after the US and its allies hit Russia with waves of sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine.

in other news: Trump targets the international criminal court because they are looking at war crimes

[-] chunes@lemmy.world 3 points 2 hours ago

The US produces twice that much diesel per day.

This was never actually going to accomplish anything.

[-] brawndo@piefed.social 7 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

With my tin foil hat on I think it's not about helping relieve diesel prices in the US, but it's payment for Russian assistance with the upcoming midterm elections.

[-] Sina@beehaw.org 6 points 7 hours ago

That amount is in the ballpark of 20 hours of diesel consumption in the US, that will surely do it!

[-] MrShankles@reddthat.com 1 points 6 hours ago

Because he's Putin's bitch. We already know that

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 2 points 8 hours ago

Whatever you need to do to become dictator, even if it means selling your soul to the devil.

I know loads of Americans are stupid enough to applaud all this

[-] Havatra@lemmy.zip 56 points 16 hours ago

I imagine this is what G7 hoped to prevent when they decided to agree on bailing out the US by releasing their oil reserves, and the orange idiot does this still?! G7 should reverse the fuck out of their decision and don't give the US any oil for this idiotic "deal". Maybe even put some sanctions onto the US for their support of a nation currently under heavy sanctions.

[-] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 hours ago

Maybe even put some sanctions onto the US

Anybody can 'sanction' anything on paper, but sanctions only matter if the sanctioner has something the sanctioned needs. For example, the US can sanction countries or companies and take away their ability to trade using the US dollar. What does the G7 have that the US needs? This would just backfire and hurt G7 (particularly EU) countries.

[-] Tabula_stercore@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

What does the G7 have that the US needs?

Organisations that buy dollar bonds. Sanction that and the usa will crumble.

[-] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 hours ago

Selling off the bonds alone will have limited effect, as the other commenter said. Selling off the dollars could have a bigger effect, but you'll need to use gold or something like that for international payments.

[-] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 3 points 6 hours ago

Organisations that buy dollar bonds.

They're irrelevant, the Central Bank just buys a bond from Treasury, coupon rate of 0% i.e QE. Japan been doing it with the Yen for decades for example.

Sanction that and the usa will crumble.

zero consequence.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Gotta keep war going on for a little longer. If people ever wake up to this garbage it would be a fine day.

[-] Sunshine@piefed.ca 4 points 10 hours ago

Trump the fascist extremist strikes again.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 1 points 7 hours ago

How so entirely unpredictable this turned out to be! It’s almost as if we believed the spin that he was actually trying to find someone to facilitate this.

[-] WhoIzDisIz@lemmy.today 25 points 15 hours ago

What happened to all that wonderful Venezuelan oil Trump was stealing?

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 7 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

venzeulan has heavy crude oil, which is very difficult to process, and apparently only chevron has the ability to do so, but its quite limited. so its almost practically useless. venzeulan president capture was all a distravtion anyways.

[-] Lyrl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 hours ago

US refineries on the Gulf coast were designed and built specifically for heavy/sour crude, because at the time they were built Venezuela was the largest crude supplier to that coast. They now have to transport heavy crude down from Canadian oil sands because they aren't set up for the light/sweet crude that has been found closer by more recently.

Venezuela isn't outputting much crude because their government is so corrupt no international company trusts them with capital investments (except Chevron a little bit, as you mentioned), and they have run their domestic oil companies into the ground. If they could get their shit together, the US Gulf refineries would love to have more of their crude.

[-] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 6 points 9 hours ago

Venezuela has a lot of oil reserves, but not a lot of oil extraction equipment. Building those will take years.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

That’s his “sellin oil”.

[-] glitch1985@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Give it 2 weeks

[-] ProfThadBach@lemmy.world 26 points 15 hours ago

I am a US citizen. I am begging the rest of the world to boycott and sanction the US. I will taje the pain that you inflict and sadly it is the only way about 75% of this fucking country will learn. Or maybe they won't but fuck it. Burn us down.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 5 points 7 hours ago

Also would LOVE to see a total US boycott. Travel, commerce, everything. America needs to pay for this one way or another. Show those that are dicing us into the ground that you won’t support it.

PLEASE- cut all ties with the US!

[-] shittydwarf@piefed.ca 41 points 17 hours ago

If the media outlet uses the word "deal" in a story about Trump they are supporters.

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 21 points 16 hours ago

They're more than supporters, they're complicit

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 6 points 16 hours ago

I mean, it is 100% a deal. Not a good deal for America, but a deal nonetheless.

[-] YouTalkinToMe@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

The question is, what is on the other side of the deal?

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 5 points 10 hours ago

Putin gets to sell a whole bunch of diesel and make money. Trump gets to lower prices for the midterms. Those are the two parties that matter here.

[-] YouTalkinToMe@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Putin has no diesel to sell and even forbid exports of it. It's just smoke and mirrors, but opens a door to blame Ukraine.

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 30 points 17 hours ago

Ahh fascists of a feather flock together

[-] testaccount372920@piefed.zip 18 points 16 hours ago

How're the Russian refineries doing? Still burning?

[-] wirebeads@lemmy.ca 7 points 14 hours ago
[-] rozodru@piefed.world 6 points 16 hours ago

yup, americans you're all nazis. I don't care anymore. you've aligned yourselves with another dictator for some diesel that likely won't show up.

I absolutely LOVE how prior to all this trump bullshit americans were all about their 2A rights but now? crickets. the whole "don't tread on me" thing which ends up was actually bullshit. you're a bunch of cowards. I don't care anymore, i'm done holding my tongue. I'm sick and tired and living above a bunch of nazis.

"what do you expect us to do?" nothing. I hoped you'd have done something, ANYTHING, by now. "we have the midterms!" yeah you think this clown is going to actually allow you to gain power via voting? grow up. take back your country.

[-] teslasdisciple@lemmy.ca 17 points 16 hours ago

The people shouting about their 2A rights are the ones that support him.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago
[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 8 points 16 hours ago

If aligning oneself with dictators is enough to make one a Nazi, then all of Europe must be doing Sieg Heils three times a day. I have no love for America, but the holier than thou moral outrage doesn't survive a reading of 21st century EU foreign policy.

[-] late_pessimistic@slrpnk.net 1 points 7 hours ago

What's EU's 21st century foreign policy?

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 3 points 7 hours ago

Okay on second thoughts "EU" wasn't the best way to put that. Let me rephrase: I have no love for America, but the holier than thou moral outrage doesn't survive a reading of 21st century EU member states' foreign policy (because the EU's foreign policy tends to be pretty limited, though no less despicable). With that in mind, here's your answer:

Well for the most part whatever America is doing, which means backing American escapades in Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Libya (though this one was more of a mutual collaboration), Yemen, etc off the top of my head. European countries also seem to generally have no problem with selling weapons and providing aid to brutal Middle Eastern dictators, leading to European weaponry reaching RSF hands. If you specifically want EU stuff, you have fishing in West Africa and of course the EU has a trade agreement with Israel.

[-] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 1 points 7 hours ago

NoneOfYour is probably talking about the humanitarian aid spent on war torn dictatorial countries like paying for healthcare, food, education. Often caused by US Russian proxy wars.

Or about France and UK aiding the US in their war in Irak, Or of Palestine by arguably more EU countries backing although, often innocently advertised, defence only.

[-] rozodru@piefed.world -1 points 16 hours ago

you think THAT'S the only reason americans are nazis? yeah ok buddy.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 5 points 16 hours ago

That's the reason you gave, at least. If you have something better (hopefully something that actually engages with the meaning of the word "Nazi") I'm all ears.

[-] rozodru@piefed.world 3 points 14 hours ago

well gee lets see public executions, rounding up people via a gestapo, killing innocent protestors, threatening other nations soveringty, and that's just off the top of my head.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 3 points 10 hours ago

Oh the Trump regime and its supporters are definitely fascist, but as for everyone else in America not stopping fascism doesn't make one fascist; it makes one complicit (which I do agree a majority of non-fascist Americans are).

[-] Kyrias@lemmy.ca 0 points 16 hours ago

lol

Americans have always been like this.

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago

From the very start.

[-] rozodru@piefed.world -3 points 16 hours ago

yeah I know they have i'm just sick of it. and it's always the same song and dance "DC is a long drive from where I am" or "I have to work" etc, etc, etc.

They'll allow themselves to become Nazi's because it's an inconvenience for them otherwise.

[-] Kyrias@lemmy.ca -1 points 16 hours ago

Just laugh at them when they pretend otherwise and try to live a good life regardless.
