Only way to disable this is to open about:config and change some value. Why this has no dismiss button?

There is couple more settings that are on by default and i hate those; but mostly those are subjective. However who wants 80px long "SIGN IN SO WE STORE YOUR BOOKMARKS, HISTORY IN OUR SERVERS" stuff on their screen?

Yeah.... im noticing im starting to use Librewolf more and more due to these annoying updates.

Either that or Waterfox.

[-] HouseWolf@pawb.social 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I switched to Librewolf a few years back now.

While you can do most of the modifications to vanilla Firefox yourself, That's effort you gonna keep up with every update.

Also the LibreWolf devs dedication to scrapping off any Ai crud just becomes more important as Mozilla pushes it harder.

[-] Ripley_Tripley@lemmus.org 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yeah, i dont want to go through that every time i open my browser on my computer, i just want it to work. Im glad Librewolf is firm on this, makes me like them even more now.

I had to setup Firefox before posting this and i had to disable a lot of settings that are scattered to multiple pages. Like those are not sane defaults. Who want to get recommended extensions while browsing? Who wants an AI model to suggest tabs & name for tab groups???

Sounds very Google-like to me... cant even open the browser just by itself and something is tracking you.

[-] phar@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Not sure why you wouldn't. Exactly the same functionality without any of the BS. I've been using Librewolf and Fennec for years but still do the Firefox sync to make life easier.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Exactly the same functionality

Not really. Builtin password manager is no more (which is a deal breaker to me) and all Ai related functionalities. While most Ai stuff is useless, I appreciate the offline translation of websites. The only Ai related functionality I use in Firefox. This one not a deal breaker, but its nice to have that I would miss it in Librewolf.

[-] phar@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The AI part was in the "without any of the BS" part of my sentence. If you like AI features then use what you want.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Right, but then its no longer exactly the same functionality, because it removes a useful functionality. Even if all Ai features are BS for you, its still a useful functionality that is being removed, and therefore no longer "exactly the same functionality". Because it is done offline on your machine and the results are pretty good from my experience. I use it often (translation). And there is no extension available integrated this well into the browser, doing the job this good and stays offline.

Pretty sure everyone else knew what I meant

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Pretty sure not everyone else. But besides that, does that mean I am not allowed to ask, because I did knew what you mean? So only people who know what you mean are allowed to ask what you mean?

What exactly do you mean with this reply now? I mean removing a useful Ai feature like I described as above is removing a non BS feature. I thought LibreWolf would remove all Ai features. I'm confused, do they or don't they?? You are so cryptic right now.

[-] phar@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I don't know, the other person responding also mentioned it scraping off all the AI crud, so I really don't think it's cryptic and I think everyone else knew that AI was one of the main "BS" features I was talking about. I am sorry I was not extremely blatantly clear enough for you. Feel free to move on if it is causing you this must stress.

(how) can i sync my stuff with LibreWolf?

[-] phar@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

You can still use Firefox sync if you want to sync

[-] XiJinpingStanAccount@lemmy.ml 2 points 2 weeks ago

As someone else said firefox sync does work, but if you are using LibreWolf for privacy reasons that may not appeal to you. So, just as an alternative you can just open the passwords folder, and export a csv file with all of your passwords. Encrypt it and put it on a microsd card and stick it somewhere. Now you've got a backup of your passwords without needing to give them to firefox.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Wish Librewolf had builtin support for passwords. I would probably use it.

[-] moonpiedumplings@programming.dev 16 points 2 weeks ago

Firefox sync is end to end encrypted by the way: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sync

It is technically also self hostable, but I gave up when I was investigating. Hosting the sync server itself wasn't too bad, but I couldn't figure out how to also self host the account server, which is also needed to have the sync process entirely based on my own infrastructure.

[-] thehatfox@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Urgh, I was considering setting up a self hosted Firefox sync. I don’t use syncing at all currently but thought it might be useful.

I didn’t know the account system was a separate dependency. Hosting that seems a bit of burden so I think I will just stay not using sync.

[-] moonpiedumplings@programming.dev 2 points 2 weeks ago

I use syncing through Mozilla's servers. Part of what killed my motivation for a self hosted setup was realizing that Mozilla sync is e2ee.

[-] Sims@lemmy.ml -1 points 2 weeks ago

Second that. I gave up also, and thought that mozilla could've made that part easier - if they wanted to.

about:config
identity.fxaccounts.enabled
false

Restart Firefox (if you want to keep your open tabs, make sure:

  • Settings
  • Home and startup
  • Startup, Open previous windows and tabs

is selected).

This way you can disable the whole "give control of your data to a pro-LLM enshitifying CEO" with:

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 weeks ago

Thank you. Great tip.

[-] ComradePedro@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

tbh I think Firefox Sync is GOATED, but still, there absolutely should be a dismiss button lol

[-] davel@lemmy.ml 7 points 2 weeks ago

And I’m still no closer to a hamburger 😮‍💨

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

Zen is a great fox based alternative if you want basically a reskinned Firefox.

[-] anothermember@feddit.uk 3 points 2 weeks ago

It's pretty good yes, but it also has that sign in to sync banner by default.

[-] ShutUpWesley@piefed.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

That's weird, I've never seen it

[-] MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 weeks ago

Sync is E2EE, but also you can sync bookmarks without history or whatever works. I'm always a little confused how people manage using multiple devices without having bookmarks synced across?

[-] adarza@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 weeks ago

Why this has no dismiss button?

i dunno. it should. there's another one a little deeper in the menus that does have a dismiss 'X' and it doesn't come back after.

[-] Squizzy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

The app has the vpn ad in te settings where the bookmark was before, annoying.

[-] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

"Why does this have no dismiss button?"

Sorry, pet peeve.
