The context of this: https://understandingwar.org/research/russia-ukraine/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-october-9-2026/

US President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9 to waive sanctions on Russian diesel to increase diesel supply to the United States’ and global markets — a decision which will fund Russia’s war effort and protract Russia’s war in Ukraine.[1] Trump stated that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the United States’ and global markets, another 500,000 tons in November 2026, and one million tons “immediately thereafter” and noted that Russian oil refineries can supply another three million tons of diesel “in a short time” depending on their conditions. The US Treasury Department issued a temporary general license, at Trump‘s direction, to allow Russian diesel supply to the global market.[2] Russian exports accounted for only 9.5 percent of the global diesel export supply in 2025, and the Russian Federation temporarily banned diesel exports on July 8, 2026 as Ukraine intensified its long-range strike campaigns against Russia’s oil refining capacity and intermediate-range campaign against Russian logistics, including the deliveries of fuel to occupied Ukraine and the frontline.[3] The US’ decision to allow Russia to supply diesel to the global markets, including to the United States, will support the Kremlin’s efforts to stonewall US efforts to end the war, as the profits from diesel exports will enable Russia to continue funding its war in Ukraine. The US decision to grant Russia a waiver to export diesel also represents a unilateral US concession in its negotiation posture with Russia, when Russia has offered the US no concessions in negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Oh it's Ukraine's fault that oil prices are so high? Here I thought it was the continued, useless, elective war that is still happening for no reason in the place where all the oil comes from.

[-] Burstar@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 day ago

To mislabel it 'useless' is to ignore its more nefarious purposes as it relates specifically to Ukraine.

The Iran war:

  • takes attention away from the horrors being committed daily against innocent Ukrainians civilians (amongst other things),
  • gives the US an excuse to withdraw previous commitments and refuse further military aid to Ukraine (we need our stocks now sorry, not sorry),
  • reduces US domestic support for Ukraine (the most gullible will believe the claim 'Ukraine is causing your inflation', not the imbecile they voted in)

There's a very good chance this idiot is about to become pretty severely disempowered. Of course he wants to take one last jab at the country he tried to shake down for money, which led to him being impeached.

This is how Ukraine knows it has a decent man in charge.

And how America knows it doesn't.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 8 points 2 days ago

I think he is decent, but there is also a lot of internal noise in Ukraine regarding corruption concerning him and his inner circle, mainly regarding steering money towards companies that are close to him and his buddies. His relationship to FirePoints owner has at least bad optics.

Still, he's a good wartime president even with this flaw, and changing leadership in the middle of a war is seldom a good idea.

I mean, it's one of the ways America knows it doesn't...

Are we thinking the same thing??!

Thought he was gonna end that war week one of his presidency? Crazy

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago

What's even crazier is that this guy protects pedophiles, and it's very likely he himself is one based on the tens of thousands of mentions to him in the files he's preventing the release of.

Putin’s hand is so far up trump’s ass, he’s fondling his tonsils. Amazing trump can speak at all, really.

By whom and how? Next presidential election is two years away, hoss

[-] lambipapp@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Disclaimer my view is from an European.

But, as I understand it, if the mid term elections swing democrat, a new impeachment process have a very real chance of succeeding.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

fucker has already been impeached. he’s already a felon. it won’t work. :(

[-] AdolfSchmitler@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

He's already been impeached twice. A third time will do literally nothing. Sorry for the bad news mate

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

I won't hold my breath (and neither should you). But sure, let's say they impeach him again. Let's say that the Senate even votes to remove him. Then what? What happens when he decides that he's not leaving?

[-] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

It's quite easy to justify sieging the White House if it has been taken by an enemyf the state. It's even easier to do so in Mar-a-Lago. And if he flees, he's not your problem.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh ok, so you really don't understand how things work in the US.

No, the Democrats aren't going to "siege" the White House if they take Congress this year. Yes, even if they impeach and vote to remove him.

If this is where your expectations are, you're in for a very rude awakening.

[-] Goodlucksil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Fortunately for me, I don't live in the US

[-] Comrade_bigK@anarchist.nexus 17 points 3 days ago

Oh my. Pretty obvious that Trumps buddies have shares of Putin's oil companies. When Ukraine started to hit them - they go bitching to Trump about it. At this point we had stupid narrative "Ukraine is hitting Russian refineries and driving prices up on the world market". That narrative is really dumb because it just sharing light on main elephant in the room - who is supplying sanctioned oil from Russia to the world market and why US president is helping those? - well, answer is obvious - guys connected to Trumps administration. And now they are going even further - they are legalizing their existing interest in Putin's oil industry by that stupid so called "deal' and thus - they no longer can stay formally neutral in this war and participate in negotiations as mediators. Next step gonna be - no intel, no Starlink, no PURL and if everything is bad - US NAVY defending Russian shadow fleet here and there. But there is a bright side - we will find out who exactly owns Russian shares and assets from Trump admin. Or maybe Trump just TACO as always and nothing gonna change.

[-] lurch@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Possible, but a worst case scenario. Trump has the memory and attention span of a toddler. It's possible the diplomats can fix this with smart talks.

Also, I think the US navy has their hands full with all the daily crimes and war crimes being demanded of them. I read about depleted ammunition stockpiles, ships being out too long without getting resupplied, etc. Other nations are still treating the sanctions seriously and actively take out shadow fleet vessels. So I doubt the US navy will cause international incidents with those; and even if they do, they aren't in top shape, might lose a lot of fights.

[-] Comrade_bigK@anarchist.nexus 2 points 2 days ago

Hope so. The very fact, that this scenario has become a possibility worth of discussing is quite bad on its own.

"If given the choice between Righteousness and Peace, I choose Righteousness."

_Theodore Roosevelt, a president with an actual set of balls.

Almost any other president in US history would have been proud to support Zelensky.

[-] flandish@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

problem is trump thinks the righteous thing to do is to help russia. :/

[-] DarkCloud@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

The problem is the CIA. Having the CIA, GRU, and KGB all interested in you at the same time is not a comfortable position, even before considering the war.

I'd suggest European agencies should be working to counter these forces, but given it would mean working against allies, and enemies at the same time, it's a difficult job.

Zelensky should be proud, you have to ge really good at what he's doing to get this much notoriety. A thorn in the side of international authoritarians.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

That’s what I was thinking, TBH. I have been scared for his life, but I am more scared now.
