Me, but Cuckman is "Games that won't run on my PC because I refuse to upgrade it until pricing returns to sanity", and since somebody seems to invent a new wheeze to keep pricing through the roof every few years, I'm still on a 1060.

Still, I'm enjoying older games. They're fine. For anything modern, the PS5 can run them. For anything small, the Legion Go S can run them.

Don't forget that the indie game scene exists, even if a sizable portion are just Hollow Knight ripoff for those who couldn't wait until Silksong comes out, and even if it is being flooded by AI slop because of reasons.

[-] BilSabab@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

Diablo 1 still goes hard as fuck.

[-] socsa@piefed.social 34 points 1 day ago

The real cuck energy is never actually playing the games and just watching streamers

The real real cuck energy is buying the game on Steam without waiting for a sale, and then watching the let’s play of it

The real real real cuck energy is buying the game on Steam without waiting for a sale, and then watching the let’s play of it while somebody fucks your wife

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 1 points 21 hours ago

Depends - i do not watch let's plays for anything i am actually interested in, but i have no qualms with watching them for lower quality games just for fun. And that even lead me to some games i wouldn't ever had touched without seeing the let's play.

[-] HouseWolf@pawb.social 7 points 1 day ago

Same with movies.

It's annoying when you ask someone if they've seen a film you loved. Only for when you start talking about it, they reveal they just watched a Youtube summary and ruined the whole thing for themselves...

[-] paraproto@szmer.info 2 points 23 hours ago

There are many movies I don't intend to watch, but then if they are culturally significant I read the plot on Wikipedia.

Unaffordable games like Terraria, Celeste, Binding of Isaac, which i got for 5 euro each, or like btd6 which i got for only 1, or like vivid/stasis, unless, catgirl, or dracomaton which i got for free

All of these games are amazing that i have spent over 100 hours playing each(excluding binding of isaac since i got it recently and only have half that, catgirl and unless since they are short games, and dracomaton since it caused by motherboard to melt and am too afraid to open it again

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Enjoy binding of Isaac, I lost so much of high school and college to it back when it was new. But as others have said, rebirth came out over a decade ago

[-] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 13 hours ago

Considering the post, i assumed new just meant anything not considered retro

[-] Wirlocke@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 1 day ago

Buddy, Terraria and Binding of Isaac came out in 2011, they are closer to the 90s than they are to the present.

They're retro games.

[-] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The binding of isaac: rebirth is from 2014, repentance+, the latest dlc, has been released in 2024

Terraria is still getting free updates to this day, the last "big" update being released less than 2 months ago

[-] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

You probably meant to type 2024 as the release for Repentance+

[-] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

Yes, thanks!

[-] FishFace@piefed.social 3 points 23 hours ago

So Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a retro game? Skyrim? Battlefield 3? Gears of War 3?

Pull the other one!

[-] mrbigmouth502@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Those are 7th gen games, and 7th gen is pretty much where modern gaming began.

[-] ZeroGravitas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 65 points 1 day ago

It's just like old music. People have been making music since the dawn of time, and the ratio of good to shit music was relatively constant. The only thing is, shit music tends to be forgotten over time, whereas the greats still survive.

People that are into old music, regardless of the period, are almost by definition listening to a curated bunch of greatest hits. Ditto for retro gaming: the by-the-numbers, derivative or unplayable crap is long forgotten.

Saving for being a soyjack meme where "me" is girl :3

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 43 points 1 day ago

I have to disagree. The amount of high quality games has never been higher, and there is something for every kind of player available. And i can remember a ton of absolutely awful games from the 90s and 00s.

AAA studios having enshittified doesn't mean that you have to go retro to find a great game.

[-] dreamkeeper@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

There are also way, way more shit games you need to wade through to find the good ones. The vast majority of indie games are still shovelware garbage.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Just as it was in the 90s and 00s. Also, i cant even remember the last time Steam recommended anything close to Shovelware to me if wasn't on mt 15th run of the recommendation queue.

Next year curated sale spots are going to be replaced by recommendations based off your account history, in an effort to improve the visibility for niche games that people might be interested in. This will surface even more games that are currently struggling with low sales (reportedly the experimentation in that direction had very positive impact on less known hq games.)

[-] dreamkeeper@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

It absolutely wasn't the same in the 90s, it was no where near was easy to develop and publish games back then. Now someone can cook up a shit indie game with prebuilt assets in a month. Back then you needed a physical publisher. There were trash games but there weren't thousands of them getting released every month.

Also my steam recs are full of shovelware games. But Steam's never had a good recommendation engine so that doesn't surprise me.

[-] Wildmimic@anarchist.nexus 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

Just because it was harder to publish games it didn't mean that the average game was better. Survivorship bias is a thing. Noone even mentions the godawful crap that was thrown at us back then (outside of the honorable mentions like E.T.), while the absolute hits from back then are well anchored in the collective mind.

If your recommendations are trash, please feed the algorithm a bit, because that only happens if you never ignore things / publishers or someone played a bunch of trash in the past on that account, and when you never wishlist/follow games that interest you. You can curate what the queue shows you very well - the times i get a game that has even just mixed reviews are pretty rare.

Edit: that last part is because unlike other companies, Valve does not spy and analyze you from all angles. This also means you have to engage more with it to get a good result, because without accurate information it cant do shit. I prefer it that way - better they only use what i willingly give in a specific context than dealing with another abomination like Meta.

[-] SorteKanin@feddit.dk 15 points 1 day ago

Yea really it's more a distinction between indie games and AAA games. The indie scene has never been better honestly.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 day ago

There are a lot of good new games out there too, they're all indie games though. Some of them are built for retro consoles too haha. The NES dev scene is really active

[-] flameleaf@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Gameboy too. There are so many new old games on itch.io.

[-] brax@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, that that GBStudio thing really made gameboy dev super accessible. There's the NESmaker for NES stuff - it's not the best, but it's the easiest thing out there like it lol.

I often scrape itch for new NES stuff. There's an SNES game jam going right now that I'm hoping will bring some fresh stuff to check out.

[-] SpookyBogMonster@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

I have a Miyoo Mini Plus, and these homebrew/Game Jam Games are really perfect for it.

I've been playing a pokemon Rom hack called Lazarus, and it feels like a fully featured, modern pokemon game, in a GBA style, without just aping Gen 3 assets. It's a delight to play!

Same with Pico8 games. Getting pico8 to run natively on the Miyoo mini is pretty easy, and there are a ton of really cool, bite-sized little games available for free. A lot of them remind me of old flash games, in their simplicity.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 24 points 1 day ago

If AAA gaming collapses for a couple years and investment money goes to smaller devs making games with less focus on obscenely detailed graphics and more focus on engaging gameplay and stories, I would be sooooo happy.

[-] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Why? Then the devs you love would be controlled by investors and shareholders. You won't be likely to get the games you love anymore.

AAA studios already have the ability to fix the problem, they just don't want to:

  • Fire more people to reduce studio size, there is no reason to have more than like 150 people, realistically
  • Focus on smaller projects that can be developed faster
  • Put all the game content in the game at launch
  • Smaller game means less dev time and more and better bug fixing
  • Make a fun game first, then decide the details

For some reason they think that retaining every single employee and developing impossibly huge games is more important though.

[-] paraproto@szmer.info 1 points 23 hours ago

They could probably retain those employees and just do more games in the same time with advice taken from the rest of your points.

[-] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Wouldn't be smart to create so much self competition by flooding the market with so many games, even from just a single publisher. People wouldn't have enough time or money to buy and play them all. The business side would end up losing more money than it makes, which would easily lead to a death spiral of firing people into studio closure.

At smaller studio sizes of less than 100, one single studio in today's market could easily be generating 10 games per year or more. But a publisher might have 20 or more studios. That's 200+ games per year from just a single publisher. Now expand that to multiple publishers, and we haven't even mentioned the infinite indie games that release each year. Games already get drowned out of sales and thats with AAA barely releasing a handful of games each year. It would be much harder to gain any marketshare if so many more games were released in just one year.

[-] fenrasulfr@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

There are so many great modern indie games and double AA games and even great AAA games.

[-] olafurp@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

I stick to indie games because my computer can't handle anything else. On average they're more fun and have a lot more novelty to the compared to the lowest common denominator AAA games.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 day ago

The one silver lining from the RAM “crisis” is that more games will be made to use lower resources.

[-] creamfresh@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Revisionism. Releasing questionable quality because the moneypeople were pushing for it has always happened in the past. People who remember are just less likely to scream online about it.

[-] shads@leminal.space 19 points 1 day ago

There's also a healthy dose of survivorship bias. The truly terrible games have faded into obscurity back when I got my first Amiga I played "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" for a few weeks, because that was one of the two pack in games. Guess how many times I have revisited that steaming pile of Tiertex shit since then?

[-] taiyang@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I'm glad someone mentioned survivorship bias. I used to do a fun little "True Random" roulette with some rom packs I had (basically every game ever made prior to PS2) and a vast majority were pretty awful. The challenge we had was to play at least 30 minutes, but that was so rough sometimes.

[-] shads@leminal.space 5 points 1 day ago

It's tough though, I have played a few games I used to love back in the day over the last few years that are not what I remember at all. Can't help but feel like my struggle is with going back to a gameplay style that's evolved far past the games that are locked in time. I beat Dune 2 with all 3 factions as a teenager, struggled to play it for an hour last year. It's hard to go back to one of the grand daddies of the RTS genre when you have gotten used to modern interfaces, controls, and features.
