No really, don't come here, even for work. They're putting everybody in camps to meet their insane arrest quotas.

Great.
I wouldn't go even if I was offered a free trip all expenses paid.
It's gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.
Even without all the fascism, it's still the worst.

It’s gaudy, fake, ugly, unsustainable and stupid.

Apparently it used to be relatively cheap, so people put up with those things. I wonder if Vegas will survive the price hikes.

[-] awfulawful@lemmy.blahaj.zone 50 points 3 days ago

Vegas used to be the land of free stuff to reduce all barriers to gambling and keep you around gaming: free parking, free drinks, free shows. Rooms were cheaper than you'd expect because it was subsidized by the gambling. All of that is gone now.

I think they are convinced they can survive on milking rich idiots. I don't think it makes sense from a scale perspective. Vegas always builds way too big because they never want to turn away gamblers due to lack of space. But it's really expensive to cool and maintain enormous spaces.

I think they are convinced they can survive on milking rich idiots.

They can. Sure their staff will get laid off but the rich people will still keep placing bets in large enough numbers that the house stays afloat. Fact of the matter is that rich people struggle to get dopamine hits and gambling large quantities of money is one of the few things they have left. There's a comedy called Rat Race that illustrates

Vast majority of sporting events and entertainment is funded by gambling and alcohol unfortunately.

The house will definitely get smaller, have less employees, and a higher buy in... but the gambling industry will persist.

And those are it's best features...

[-] Banana@sh.itjust.works 12 points 3 days ago

haven't ever gone, really not interested, tbh.

There is literally so much Canada to explore?

Ikr, I can't relate to Vegas-enjoyers, even before Trump.
Unless you're into fake gold, cigarette smoke, tire dust, concrete, gambling, objectification.
I don't believe in Hell, but Vegas is straight up nightmarish.
It's like a pizza oven over there, the concrete radiates heat well after the sunset.
They abuse AC everywhere to a level where you're either freezing inside or cooking outdoors.
The strip itself could be pedestrian focused but it's instead car-centric for no reason.
Trucks go up and down the strip for the sole purpose of pulling an ad-trailer-TV thing.
Crossing the street is potentially a 5-10 minute affair that takes you through a mall because reasons.
It's basically an incarnation of the worst of capitalism and consumerism in the most unsustainable way in the most stupid place.
I hate the place with a passion and I cannot imagine willfully spending time there when one can be literally anywhere else instead.

[-] Banana@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

yeah fuck all of that, would much rather go to like Montreal or something

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Most of it only accessible by car. :/

We do bus tours from cities sometimes, but those don't always exist or go where we want.

I don't love outdoor sports either. Hiking, skiing, camping... snore

With ICE's arrest quotas, the saying "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" has a whole new meaning.

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 52 points 3 days ago

A state election going Democrat doesn't make me want to visit the GOP controlled USA which threatens Canada, so this is irrelevant. Also CAD is 66 cents currently.

[-] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 26 points 3 days ago

Also CAD is 66 cents currently.

This is irrelevant. Historically, Canadians would go to the US even with this exchange rate. This is not a major driving issue. Yes, there would be lower cross border traffic because of exchange rate, but not like this.

To call attention to the exchange rate as an issue, gives them coverage that the problem is the exchange rate, not their extremely fucking awful attitudes/policies/abuses and evils.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 13 points 3 days ago

The exchange rate may matter more to people when everything is already more expensive than it used to be.

[-] ragepaw@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago

That would be true if it stopped Canadians from traveling. It has not.

Canadians are traveling less to the US.

[-] BurgerBaron@quokk.au 9 points 3 days ago

I only spoke for myself in that comment. The exchange rate matters to me.

Our household is still doing a full American boycott, or at least as much as we realistically can. No buying US groceries, no Amazon, we cancelled all our streaming things and certainly no US travel.

And every time I hear complaints from the US about how their liquor industry is suffering or whatever... good! Their president keeps talking shit about us, deliberately tries to fuck our economy up and continually threatens to invade us. Until they get rid of that asshole and do many other things to fix their shit, I don't care if they all go broke and I hope everyone else keeps it up as well.

[-] skankhunt42@lemmy.ca 11 points 3 days ago

What really pisses me off is half the stuff we bought in our last shopping trip says "Product of Peru" or "Product of Mexico" on the front, then you flip the blueberries over and it has a US distributed by address on the back. I'm doing my best but they're making it harder to spot.

Shit, I would never go to Vegas except for conferences

Why would y'all want to come down here to go to Vegas?

[-] Krudler@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Pinball Museum and Hall of Fame.

There is no other reason to visit Las Vegas.

Defcon is a nice conference

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

I miss LISA as well. Covid casualty.

At least there's less temptation to go there. Professionally I might be pretty pushed to go.

[-] Witchfire@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I used to go all the time as a child. The surrounding area is really pretty, there's a lot of good trails not that far, and Hoover Dam had water.

Nowadays, I have no fkn idea

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 27 points 3 days ago

It was a shit hole at the best of times.

[-] Nomecks@lemmy.ca 23 points 3 days ago

Maybe because it's insanely expensive to go to Vegas now?

[-] Brokentooth@piefed.ca 18 points 3 days ago

Also, getting interrogated at the border? not to mention, maga.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago

No, because it’s full of Americans.

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Vegas had cool shows and entertainment. I miss Penn and Teller, and the short flight was nice. Vegas had some nice desert hikes.

But here I am in Japan downing a bowl of ichiran ramen and planning a walk through the torii gates tomorrow. The yen is pretty cheap right now too.

(Well not NOW now, it's 4am)

The USA ain't worth the effort or the risk, and they don't respect us.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Penn and Teller.. ironically Canadians.

[-] rbos@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

No? Penn born in Massachusetts (thank god for autocomplete on that one, holy hell), Teller in Pennsylvania (ditto).

I have personally passed up a trip to Vegas over US nonsense this last year.

[-] supersquirrel@lemmy.ca 17 points 3 days ago

Las Vegas can't die fast enough in my book...

[-] weps@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

the election issue of course being

do we want these asshole oligarchs as our leaders or not?

[-] ramble81@lemmy.zip 15 points 3 days ago

Even up in New England there are almost zero Canadian license plates on cars. I’ve seen maybe 2-3 in the past couple weeks.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

At this point, avoiding the US is habituated with Canadians, so tourism is very unlikely to recover. The problem for Canadians is renting cottages in summer has now gotten insanely expensive thanks to Air BNB and Boomer greed.

[-] jade52@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

Big time. If I wanted to rent a cottage like 2-3 hours from Toronto, it's going to cost the same as an all inclusive vacation in the Carribean. The only way it's affordable if you rent with a large group.

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 10 points 3 days ago

Canadians refusing to be insulted by nothing more than a pedophile plus the smartphone gambling apps were bound to take it's toll. I read a while back that LV is only catering to the whales now and are doing better than ever. I guess that news story was wrong.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

LV has such a violent homeless problem even police are scared to enter some old parking garages.

[-] mp3@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

Went once, that was enough.

I went down to Vegas back in April for Sick New World. I loved it there, even if it apparently isn't what it used to be. Of course things will never be the same, but I saw the appeal.
