Worth noting that this lawsuit alleges Expedia is even causing higher prices if you book directly from the hotel. That's exactly what you would expect to see in a monopolistic pricing scheme.
I never book through 3rd party sites. I will sometimes use them as aggregators for information like hotel amenities, but I have heard of so many issues including cancelled bookings leaving travelers stranded. Calling a hotel directly will sometimes get you a better deal then just booking online, but in my experience it's mostly the nicer places where that's true. The local holiday inn employee isn't going to do you any favors just because you called, if anything they are a bit annoyed in my experience.
As a counterpoint, I always book through 3rd party sites and have literally never had a problem. They are consistently like 20% cheaper than booking directly, and that's the minimum. I've literally stayed at 5 star hotels for less than half the cost they charge on their own site.
And calling? Are you kidding? Do you think this is pre-2020 or something? The overworked, underpaid person at the front desk does not give a single fuck if you found a cheaper price elsewhere. Or you get routed to a call center for the hotel chain where someone reads a script at you for 8 minutes before finally revealing the price, which is always the exact same as the one on their website. This seems to be the universal experience as it's the same regardless of if it's a fancy place or a dirt cheap hostel. You might as well be asking if they'd be willing to install a football field in your room. The response is always a firm no with confusion on why you would even bother asking for such a thing.
To be clear, I'm not calling requesting a price match or anything. I'm calling just to book. I'm sure a lot depends on where and when you're going, but I've gotten anything from room upgrades to discounts to free meals just by being nice to the person on the phone. I certainly never call expecting anything, and I'm definitely not batting 100, but there a bunch of amenities that nicer places can offer their premium customers that they're willing to offer other customers who just happen to be nice to them.
I have basically never seen a third-party site offer me a better deal on just a hotel I'm interested in. Maybe if I had bundled car or something, or maybe I'm just going to the wrong hotels. If you're regularly getting that level of savings I totally see why it would be worth it.
The last time I booked with a 3rd party, the pool was not working when I got there. The whole point of booking a hotel was so that my son could play in the pool for a while. They said they couldn't let me know because the 3rd party didn't give any contact information.
Same. The hotel has the product, these companies offer a slight amount of ease, not otherwise don't provide any value, but they want a cut of every booking through their site. They are pure middlemen, and often times won't even let you cancel.
Book thru the hotel and you'll get a better deal, and you'll generally be able to cancel your reservations without going through tons of bullshit.
Even if the hotels can't give you a better price due to some BS agreement with a reseller, booking direct often results in you getting a mini bar voucher or something.
no shit

Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
