"Boys join frats. Men join PROTESTS."

Love it.

Honestly that’s fantastic energy, and I’m here for it

it was just a stupid comment, sorry. i thought it was funny. of course i don't want to call them brotests. it's like what the fratboys that we don't like would perhaps say.

i feel like my comment was interpreted differently than how i intended it. it was just supposed to be a stupid dad-joke pun.

[-] insanemantis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Oh it was bad alright xD

My downvote wasn't as serious as other downvotes I'd normally give. You just really made me groan

Some of these signs go hard, DAMN.

"I am Jane Doe... Also John Doe."

✊✊✊ Fuck yeah, speak up for the guys who've had their bodies taken from them too!

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 57 points 3 days ago

Somehow it feels like I've been waiting my entire life to see a protest where people are holding signs simply saying "frats are bullshit". Important words.

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 56 points 3 days ago

Love to see it.

The old slogan in Norway is that women's struggle is class struggle. It doesn't translate well, but the sentiment certainly applies to the US. Entitled shitstains like Trump and Kavanaugh have raped and molested their way into positions of power since the beginning of civilization, always enabled by the silence, cowardliness, and collaboration of the men around them. Men need to break the silence and riot against this broken fucking culture not only for the sake of women, but also to avoid being ruled by a class of rapist psychos until the end of days.

I feel like feminism went out of fashion lately. Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call to get people back on track. We're fucking lost without it.

[-] zoloftt@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

I'm curious about what you mean by "it doesn't translate well".

Like, it rhymes in Norwegian? Or the complete meaning doesn't come across?

I like the slogan even if it doesn't quite translate the way you mean.

Thanks for sharing that, I'm going to use it.

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

In Norway we'd say "kvinnekamp er klassekamp". It's a bit catchier, but more importantly "kvinnekamp" is a more established term than "women's struggle", so I wasn't sure how well it would translate. If it sounds good to native speakers that's of course great!

[-] nysqin@feddit.org 13 points 3 days ago

So what you're saying it's like the idiom "trans rights are human rights" but "women's rights are class rights"? I'm sure people can work with that.

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 12 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The logic of the slogan is the same for sure. However, I find the word kamp to be important: Rights are something you have or you don't. Emphasizing rights is great and all, but you risk making people believe they only need to support rights rather than to fight for them.

The central point of Marx is that "the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles". In Norwegian socialism the core instinct is to join the class struggle, to strike, protest, and fight the capital in any way possible in order to create better conditions not for yourself, but for those fighting at your side.

Unlike "kamp" I don't find "struggle" to be a particularly powerful word, but I think it's important to use it. This is about a lot more than protecting the rights of women or to grant new ones; it's about fixing a gigantic gaping hole in our culture. It is a struggle, and it will continue to be until the end of history.

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

"Kamp" is more akin to "battle" than "struggle" in energy. I would translate "kvinnekamp" as "fighting for women", but you can't really translate "klassekamp" in the same way, so you lose symmetry.

The best I can come up with on the spot is "Fighting for women is a class fight".

[-] cabbage@piefed.social 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah, this is why I find that it doesn't translate so well. The German Klassenkampf is typically translated as class struggle though, so those familiar with Marxism in English will recognize the term, flawed as it is.

It's fascinating how interconnected ideas and language is.

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I came across the English version of Knausgård's "Min Kamp" yesterday, and it was translated as "my struggle" as well. In that context "struggle" made sense.

I'm starting to think "fighting for women is a class struggle" makes the most sense, but it certainly isn't nearly as catchy.

It feels like "trans rights are human rights" has a similar vibe with a different demographic, but we want more than just rights for women.

I really should learn Norwegian. As a German I know half your words anyway. Why am I trying to learn Italian? It's way too hot there!

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, German speakers tend to learn Norwegian really fast, and with virtually no accent. I've met people who could be mistaken for a native speaker in six months. The only people who have an easier time are the Dutch.

You'd think the Swedish and Danish would have an easier time, and they certainly understand it easier, but they always end up with a heavy accent. A lot of them simply keep speaking their own language since the Norwegians understand most of it.

That's it, I'm learning Norwegian!

Do you think they'd need some software architect who loves solitude and nature?

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I'm not super tuned into the Norwegian tech market anymore, but the solitude and nature part should be very feasible. Even Norwegian cities are small and close to nature.

There seems to be some open positions, a lot of them in government agencies at first glance. Here's a search for "architect", half of which appears to be software and the other half construction:

https://www.finn.no/job/search?q=arkitekt

I couldn't easily narrow it down more, because some of these positions hardly mention software, and the ones which do use wildly inconsistent words for it.

Thanks 💖

I was only partly joking. I loved Norway, and I loved being there and hygge and everything. If I ever leave Germany, I'll head north.

“Slut” means “end” in a lot of nordic languages, so…

[-] SalmiakDragon@feddit.nu 1 points 2 days ago

Irrelevant here - see the rest of the thread for detailed discussion.

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

I don't know if two qualifies as "a lot", but I guess it is a significant proportion of Scandinavian languages.

[-] frank@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

Isn't it the case in Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish?

[-] bus_factor@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Norwegian spells it "slutt", so not quite.

[-] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 32 points 3 days ago

That boys join frats sign goes so hard

[-] velma@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 days ago

Hold their feet to the fire.

It's a shame and a stain on our humanity how we treat rape victims.

[-] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago

Thought that lady at bottom left had a mini bow and arrow for some reason. Really threw me off for a minute

[-] LadyButterfly@reddthat.com 5 points 3 days ago

Haha I see it now!

[-] RizzRustbolt@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Awesome.

(But don't bring yard sign frames to protests, folks.)

[-] Okokimup@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

This is some beautiful accidental rennaissance.
