Well THAT does it! I'm not voting for Hasan Piker anymore. Don't try to change my mind!

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

They’re just putting him in the spank bank for when Grindr crashes

[-] martti@suppo.fi -2 points 8 hours ago

Hasan, what do we think of Taiwan?

  • "Ehm, the concept of Taiwan should remain in the hands of the people that dont want to disrupt the ongoing relations with China"

Definitely didnt get his mansion from CCP curator.

[-] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 hours ago

it should be in the hands of the taiwanese people though; it's not for imperialists to decide.

When did he say this? I can't really find a source. Otherwise it's about as believable as this: Martti, what do we think about China?

  • "Well, they've been on the forefront of EVs for the better part of this new millenium, and have lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty. Sure, they have some human rights abuses, but when I compare this for example to the dozens of violent military incursions that the US has carried out in foreign nations, resulting in the deaths of millions, I cannot but conclude that on the whole, the influence of modern day China has been a net positive, and that focussing on them for their human rights abuses rather than the much more voluminous and needlessly cruel actions of modern day USA, is missing the mark quite badly"

That's a direct quote btw.

Very funny. But yes he is not allowed to criticize china for some reason, and also has lots of money, this makes it utterly suspicious. And I wouldnt want to trust this person as some kind of leader.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 hours ago

That's pretty damn reductive.

Sure, he has some tankie takes , that one being an example, but he has a lot of good ones too, about Palestine, cops, healthcare, Luigi, general anti-authoritarianism, and much more.

He's a relatively young dude giving his opinion for FSM knows how many hours a week, so he's bound to have a shitty take here and there.

That doesn't mean he's on the payroll of China, much less owes his wealth exclusively or primarily to such corrupt dealings 🙄

[-] martti@suppo.fi 0 points 2 hours ago

Childish protectivness never leaves us I assume? My statement is, that he is not allowed to criticize china, and has dual standards. Like when Chinese police took his phone, it is okay, because yara-yara. But when the very same thing is done by really similar country (U.S) it is worst crime against humanity.

I personally dont want to trust a person that has high likelyhood of being chinese proxy, and will eventually betray the new left in the interests of corpocratic regime like china.

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 7 points 20 hours ago

I see centrists successfully wrote republicans' talking points for them.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

When it comes to vilifying the left, there's rarely much difference between the "centrists" (actually right to far right) and the fascists tbh 🤷🏻

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

Please let them run out of steam with us…

[-] Oppopity@lemmy.ml 33 points 1 day ago

I don't like the guy but I'd much prefer him taking up fox news talking time rather than trans people.

[-] DekSomBoon@lemmy.today 140 points 2 days ago

Jesus fucking christ i didn't think they actually talk about transgender so fucking much. Insane

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

It's incessant

[-] hayvan@piefed.world 92 points 2 days ago

When you don't want your audience to think about any real issues, you pick one or two focus on them so hard that anyone watching that is the single biggest problem in the world ever.

Hasan derangement syndrome. The entire media arm of the right wing got a serious case of that HDS. That underwear pic will do it to you.

[-] wpb@lemmy.world 3 points 18 hours ago

I've been gregging my doucette furiously to that pic.

[-] sirico@feddit.uk 0 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Champagne socialist occasional dog abuser no idea why he's the poster boy for so many left leaning people

[-] darthelmet@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

He's a political commentary streamer on Twitch. He's generally on the left with some mixed positions on various things that you'd honestly just have to watch to get the sense of.

In the last few years he's gotten more directly involved in political organizing, highlighting certain progressive candidates around the US and even getting a lot of his viewers to donate or volunteer for their campaigns. It's hard to know the full impact of this, but it's one contribution among many to the movement needed to get the left elected.

Because of this more recent round of successes from progressive candidates, including ones Hasan helped with, establishment interests in the Republican and Democratic parties have been targeting him as a proxy for the movement as a whole. In particular pro-Israel groups have been prominent in attacking him since he's against genocide.

He says some dumb shit sometimes, wording things the wrong way, being hyperbolic, etc. That plus the many opportunities for out of context clipping make it easy for these bad faith actors to find things that make him look bad. While some of it is red scare stuff, there's also a lot of Islamophobia mixed in. They then try to tie this to the progressive candidates to hurt their chances.

I probably wouldn't agree with every position he has, but he's overall not a bad guy. The hysteria around him is basically just manufactured outrage for political gain and it's not even working that well for that.

[-] Bamboodpanda@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

I hate seeing Hasan become a prominent face of democratic socialism.

He wields nuance like a bludgeon, not a tool for understanding. He doesn't inspire curiosity or invite people to question their assumptions. He tells his audience what to think and delivers it with absolute conviction.

For all their ideological differences, he reminds me of Shapiro and Crowder. The same performative certainty, selective reasoning, and confidence masquerading as intellectual authority.

And that's precisely what makes him such a convenient bogeyman for conservative propaganda. He sounds remarkably similar to the very right-wing influencers whose audiences are being told to despise him.

I don't doubt that much of the outrage surrounding him is manufactured. But that doesn't make every criticism of him illegitimate, nor does it excuse his own intellectual shortcomings.

Attention isn't credibility, and political fandom isn't intellectual discourse.

I despise that style of political commentary, regardless of which side it comes from.

[-] darthelmet@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yeah. It’s definitely legitimate to have criticisms of him and I wouldn’t entirely disagree with your assessment, it’s just worth keeping in mind that the kind of criticisms we might have aren’t even in the same intellectual ballpark as those of the right wing attacks on him.

As far as him being the face of the movement, I think it’s just a sad reality of left organizing, or the lack thereof, in America as well as the issue of organizing primarily around electoral politics. Socialist movements are mass politics. It’s not about specific people, it’s about everyone working together towards a common cause. Elections, and the media that discusses them, end up being more cults of personality. It’s great that we’re getting more leftists/progressives elected, but the way that gets portrayed focuses almost exclusively on the politician themselves as a charismatic figure with the right moral character rather than all of the work done by people to get them there. A similar thing happens with media. I think it’s just easier to follow and make a narrative around some individual than around a large ill defined group.

How do we fix that? Idk. It’s not like we don’t have any media which puts the focus on the broader movement activities, it’s just that they don’t tend to break containment to the broader public who aren’t super nerdy lefties or people directly involved with whatever is being discussed.

Any kind of streamer I give some level of benefit of the doubt because you get anyone talking for 6-12 hours straight without any opportunity to edit out something in post, you're gonna get something questionable every once in a while, even if its purely just a joke that doesn't land or a mispeak, or of course sometimes its the mask slipping for a moment and the real colors showing. It takes a bit of digging sometimes to figure out which it is regarding a given flub, but Hasan is generally a pretty decent guy from what I've seen.

  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
