The RTX 5090 now costs EUR 1,830

Hey, that's really cheap! Did the RAM shortage somehow stop when I wasn't looking?

more than it did a month ago

Oh.

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 28 points 5 days ago

Yeah, I was thinking that 1,830€ was just a normal ridiculous price for a graphics card.

...I haven't shopped for graphics cards in about 6 years...

[-] fonix232@fedia.io 7 points 5 days ago

Hell, I got my 4090 for £1500 just 2 years ago...

[-] andrewoidxyz@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

At that price you'd be stupid not to buy it.

[-] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 4 days ago

This is just stupid. Its encroaching on the price of half a car. I mean i love games but that is actually insane. They arent expectng to sell any of those cards right?

[-] demonsword@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

I'd hazard that people buying those cards at that price aren't buying them for gaming, they're using them to run local AI models

[-] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 4 days ago

yeah that makes a ton more sense. Still an insane amount to spend on a graphics card, something in my brain breaks a little

[-] demonsword@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

it's out of reach for us, but for some companies this might end up being cheaper than buying AI from american monopolists

[-] lemmyvore@feddit.nl 1 points 4 days ago

But you can buy a ton of online AI access for that kind of money.

I know, I know, privacy and offline availability and all that, but sometimes you gotta weigh the pros and cons.

[-] demonsword@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

every now and then those AI monopolists let their users' conversations leak and this risk might be inadmissible for some

[-] spacegoat@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

It’s the price of 5 reasonable used cars where I live.

[-] Strider@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

Everything's just a speculation object now.

I want to get off Mr bones wild ride!

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

What are computer adjacent hobbies that don‘t need a computer? Reading? Guess I will be reading lots of fiction soon. That is unless the government closes libraries in their cost cutting spree after making generous gifts to corporations who probably invested it all in AI. Oh well.

[-] andrewoidxyz@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

You could tinker with microcontrollers. They're pretty capable when it comes to building smaller iot devices. Or pick up a used mini pc and start self hosting 😉

[-] Doomsider@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

I am really enjoying messing around with self-hosting. I used to resell VPS back in the day, so it is fun to bring that knowledge to my home lab. I have been messing with docker to help streamline deployment.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 23 points 5 days ago

€7.7k, holy fuck

[-] CheeseNoodle@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

Even on release the 5090 cost more than my whole PC... and my PC literally had the highest end version of every other consumer grade component and a 9070XT (so highest end non-nvidia GPU). Point is it was always overpriced, a single component should not cost more than an entire rig.

[-] magnue@lemmy.world 10 points 4 days ago

My ~£700 4070ti s purchase from a couple years ago doesn't feel so insane anymore. Glad I didn't wait. Especially when the 32gb of ram was about 100.

[-] andrewoidxyz@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I already miss the good old days. Back when RAM was affordable.

[-] andrewoidxyz@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

At least game studios will optimize for lower-end hardware

Or support indie Devs not corporations.

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 11 points 5 days ago

I read it as it's 1,830 euros and thought: damn, that's expensive

[-] Nelots@piefed.zip 17 points 5 days ago

I bought an RX 6650 XT some years ago, fully intending it to be a cheap temporary card until I could afford something high-end...

I don't know if I should be upset I didn't just buy a more expensive card, or happy I'm no longer stuck with a 970. Regardless of how I feel, I'm going to be using this thing for the next decade at this rate.

[-] PurpleClouds@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago

970 gang still going strong here

[-] Soggy@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

"Strong" is maybe not the word I'd choose but it's still going.

[-] hakunawazo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago
[-] PurpleClouds@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Does that even play YouTube? Shiiiiieeeeeettt

[-] Kenny4tunes@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

I feel your pain, I'm using a 3060 rog strix 12gb card. It does everything that I want I to, but I'm biting my nails over how it'll cope with AAA titles over the next 12+ months, at 1440p settings.

[-] Le_Roi_Est_Mort@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Just saw one on Amazon for 11,500 USD

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 8 points 4 days ago

My 1660 super is going to be doing the heavy lifting for another decade...

[-] JensSpahnpasta@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago

So AAA gaming is basically dead, right? There might be a few gamers with current systems that they bought before all of this and some rich guys, but the majority will not pay those sums to play games. And that means that it will be economically insane to target a small group of gamers with a multimillion dollar budget

[-] Ashrakal@lemmy.ml 11 points 4 days ago

You don’t need a 5090, 5080, or even an NVIDIA to run games with very detailed graphics.

This means AAA game developers will need to actually sit back and optimise their games, rather than keep producing badly written code and bloated graphics.

What’s going to be down is the consumer segment at NVIDIA, because it’s not making them the money they’d like it to. Last time I read, the consumer segment was far below 5% of their income.

[-] Psythik@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I hope you're right because as someone who was insane enough to pay $1800 for a 4090 at launch, I intend on this card lasting me until at least the late 2030s. It was already $1000 more than what I'd consider reasonable for a high end GPU; no way am I paying $5K+ for a 50/60/70/8090.

[-] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 3 days ago

No. You don't need tensor cores for graphics nor do you need nvidia. This is the work of scalpers and consumer tier inference combined with a nvidia monopoly used strategically to cash out while they can. Gpus should be abundant still if nvidia didn't do this fast exit from the field and entering ai. The only redeeming factor is that all of a sudden, most of them will be bagholders

[-] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

If you see someone hacking AI vendors or their suppliers: No you don't.

[-] REDACTED@infosec.pub 5 points 5 days ago

Hey, better than dealing Bitcoin!

[-] NathanRanch@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Idgaf, I have a 970 in a drawer and I'm not afraid to use it.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 3 points 5 days ago

NGL you couldn't pay me to use the newer models after the 30 series. First of all, I don't touch anything developed with or alongside AI. Secondly I have heard the new power cables are fire hazards only rated for a dozen plugs and unplugs.

[-] KingRandomGuy@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

FWIW, lots of power connectors are indeed only rated for a low number of mating cycles (only 30), not just 12VHPWR. This includes the old PCIe 8 pin (same 30 limit). Realistically you will probably not reach the rated limit.

The actual problem, I think, is that the connector could operate without being fully plugged in, especially without current balancing on the side of the card. This is an actual fire hazard, as you now get at least some connections with very high resistance, forcing extreme current on the remaining wires with low resistance connections. This is combined with the fact that the safety margin on 12VHPWR is a lot lower than that of the PCIe 8 pin (which I believe can safely carry a lot more than its 150W rating).

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 0 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I see you start off with a bit of devils advocacy before acknowledging the risks, but this is what happens with the 12VHPWR cables:

image

This is not normal. This is new.

[-] KingRandomGuy@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Yeah, the connector spec is definitely bad given the incidents we've seen. I was just pointing out it's not actually the mating cycle limit that's the issue here (especially given older connectors like the 8 pin evidently don't have this problem, despite equivalent mating cycle ratings), but rather the rest of the spec.

[-] AnUnusualRelic@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

It's so fluffy!

[-] amorpheus@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Because it's a poorly designed connector.

[-] dmtalon@infosec.pub 4 points 5 days ago

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to unplug them at the end of each day!

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online -1 points 5 days ago

It's less about the practicality of anybody other than a repairman resocketing and/or unplugging gpus daily and more about the fact that it's of such measurably lower quality that resocketing and/or unplugging will permanently damage the device at some point.

[-] dmtalon@infosec.pub 3 points 5 days ago

Twas, but a joke...

It's insane for a product whose price has gone through the roof before the ram shortage

[-] swooper@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

Yes, anyone trying to run local LLM niw, let alone game, is way behind.

I’m really concerned that the future is subscriptions because high end hardware is rare for plebs

[-] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 2 points 3 days ago

It's because you actually believe the scalpers, the megacorps and the pundits. What if chips that can render graphics where abundant and these were all trying to make money? Because that's what they are and scarcity is good for all of them strategically. As usual it's not going to last forever, all scams have a half-life

[-] swooper@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Indeed, but its out pf our control except collective buying power eh?

[-] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago

Ah, i'd say that's called all the power
