On Monday, the office of the Mississippi attorney general, Lynn Fitch, announced that the police shooting of Kohen Wiley, a one-year-old, as he sat in his mother’s lap “was justified”. The statement came four months after the baby was killed in Senatobia, Mississippi.

On 14 June, officers in Senatobia, a small city near Memphis, were responding to a shoplifting call alleging Vellesiya Wiley, the baby’s mother, and Latoya Ferrell, a friend, had stolen a pack of diapers. Neither woman has been charged with a crime. Officials have not released any evidence of shoplifting.

According to police reports, on the day of the shooting, the women and child exited the store, entered their vehicle and began to leave the parking lot when officers arrived.

The police drew their weapons. Wiley lifted the baby up to indicate that there was a child in the car. An officer, identified by other records as Sgt Hunter Foster, fired into the vehicle, killing Kohen Wiley and wounding Ferrell. Foster is white; both Wileys and Ferrell are Black.

They still havent released the body camera footage, even to the family. The families lawyer had an independent analysis done that shows the cop fired through the side windows, not the front, proving they were never in danger. This is the same police station that just had its police chief fired last month because of constant and aggreious racism that he was texting his friends/coworkers.

This is rank of a coverup.

How is it ever justifiable to be killed for shoplifting?

[-] CmdrShepard49@sh.itjust.works 88 points 3 days ago

Just an allegation of shoplifting at that.

Can’t let the poors get one over on ya. They might get ideas.

NYPD is essentially Targets personal security force in my area. They check in twice a day, every day. If there is an issue, they're there in 30 seconds. Took them two hours to get a man with a knife out of my building lobby, 3 buildings down for reference.

And at that too my midtown Target keeps basically everything under lock and key. What's the point of even going…

Edit: if we need to keep laundry detergent locked up, we have way bigger problems to solve

[-] YeahToast@aussie.zone 10 points 3 days ago

we have way bigger problems to solve

Am not American, can confirm you have way bigger problems.

[-] Goldmage263@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Take a look at the baby's skin color, read that it is Mississippi, and fill in the blanks.

[-] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 14 points 3 days ago

shoplifting diapers even

[-] Signtist@bookwyr.me 19 points 3 days ago

Sadly, in my experience the default stance is "if they broke the law, they only have themselves to blame."

[-] Carmakazi@piefed.social 28 points 3 days ago

If comments on bodycam vids are anything to go by, anything more than misdemeanor crimes should be resolved by summary execution, including and especially fleeing from the police. I hope dead internet theory is real in that case.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago

Shoplifting a pack of diapers is almost certainly a misdemeanor.

"As AG I conducted an investigation and concluded the baby was black, therefore the shooting was justified."

Fucking disgusting.

[-] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 22 points 2 days ago

Baby? The “male suspect”.

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

"According to the FBI the one year old male suspect was to be growing up as a nazi communist, as they found out by using their predictive AI. In any different situation they would also have shot the baby. In an interview with the officer, he told reporters 'he asked chatgpt whether to shoot the baby', to which it replied 'yes, you should kill the fucking nazi communist', so he did."

As long as I live, I will support jury nullification for any and every cop killer. Abolish the police, I don't give a shit.

Mississippi: the state that never surprises but always shocks and appalls.

[-] yesman@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

They tell us that prosecutors, courts, and the police are "separate" entities, but that's a lie. They'll form up together like Voltron to prevent families of people murdered by pigs from ever getting justice.

[-] ChaoticEntropy@feddit.uk 15 points 3 days ago

That's a relief, I'd hate to know that a police officer murdered a literal infant unjustifiably. The depths of the depravity are fathomless.

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago

What else do you expect to happen when you hire people from the proud boyz circles into the police force? I am not sure this person even feels remorse.

[-] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 days ago

I will donate money to hits taken out on these officers.

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Child lives are cheap in the good ol' U.S. of A.

Actually I think it's just all lives. Except Congress and the ultra wealthy.

[-] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Republican congressmen got shot up at their own baseball team practice and still voted for the NRA. They don't value their own lives either.

No value but shareholder value in the USA.

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

I hope Gen Z burns this shithole country to the ground. We need a revolution

[-] ArmoredThirteen@lemmy.zip 38 points 3 days ago

I hope all the generations finally play their part don't put this all on gen z

[-] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 4 points 3 days ago

[-] ContactClosure@lemmus.org 1 points 2 days ago

We fixed that.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Unfortunately, a BIG chunk of Gen Z men and boys have fallen prey to far right "influencers" like Andrew Tate and Clavicular, so they can't be counted on to do the right thing about anything.

Us millennials, being in our 30s to 40s, are still young enough to get shit done, though, as are the parts of Gen X that haven't been infected with fascist ideology themselves. And Gen Z women and girls, of course.

[-] Waterpumpee@lemmus.org 6 points 3 days ago

Problem is, we have famillies. Cant go protesting if you got to work & care. Parents are basically slaves to the system. Unless we want to be in such need to, you know steal diapers and get prolly killed.

I’m an elder millennial with a young adult Gen z son who is definitely not into that garbage but Gen Z is definitely leading the revolution charge worldwide

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Oh sure, pick the fascist generation.

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I don’t think you’re correct

[-] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

In Canada at least, they're the biggest conservative supporters, some even didn't hate Americans before Trump.

Canadians aged 55 and older leaned toward the Liberals

Younger Canadians aged 18 to 34, meanwhile, picked the Conservatives.

https://globalnews.ca/news/11153872/canada-election-results-demographics-exit-polls/

Plus they're the generation that gets news from social media

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah I dropped a couple Canadian friends because they were really pro Trump and fanatically anti trans. It was weird

American police and government need to be dismantled and rebuilt. This is fucking sick. This is enough for America to deserve all the bad things that are happening.

Vote like your life depends on it. Vote Dem if you don’t want to see horror unlike you’ve never imagined.

Fuck the administration and as always ACAB.
