Shockingly high numbers of traitors.

Corporate media is lying to all of us. That 24% represents people trapped in a whirlpool of lies telling them that Alberta makes sense on its own(it doesn't), that if they join the US they will have any kind of say(they won't), and that if they do all of that the boom times of the 90s and 00s will come back(they are gone.)

“I love the poorly educated”

Its not just them though. It is all of us. Every time you pay attention to Global or CTV, they're just as bad, only more subtle.

Think of how even the "better" media in the US nevertheless misrepresented why we are angry at the 51st state comments into being about tariffs.

[-] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 8 points 3 days ago

It's hilarious that they think the US would even let them join. Maybe if they are lucky they would be declared a us territory or something similar to Puerto Rico.

They wouldn't have a say in government. Why would America bring them into the fold. Oil? America would be better off keeping them landlocked and desperate with their only options to sell oil to America or back to Canada for pennies on the dollar. Or wait for the oil industry to collapse because nothing can be sold and then when Alberta is desperate, come in and sweep up everything for American companies to buyout cheap and then keep Albertans as wage slaves.

Honestly, not really.

That 25% includes both the shitstain separatists who have always been here, as well as the none-too-bright "send Ottawa a message!" idiots who wouldn't actually vote for separation.

For decades I've heard numbers of 5-15% of the province are actively separatists. Seems pretty consistent.

The message has been getting spammed for over half a century at this point.

It is why Trudeau Sr failed to nationalize Canada's oil fields. A failure which has only benefitted the US.

With more than 1.5m votes counted, 76% supported remaining in Canada

Wow. Crushing defeat for the russian-funded bot networks. Still, that it would get this far is a warning shot.

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 15 points 3 days ago

I suspect they're as much American-funded as Russian these days.

Presumably nazis, yeah.

[-] The_Che_Banana@beehaw.org 26 points 4 days ago

What is this? A completely reasonable outcome of a political nature? IN THIS DAY AND AGE???

...wow

[-] ryper@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago

CBC has 'Yes' leading on the other 9 questions, and that's the answer MAGA-types prefer on all of them, so maybe not a completely reasonable outcome.

[-] tooq@piefed.ca 15 points 3 days ago

Yup. A disappointing result on all but one of the nine questions. Millions of dollars blown just show what a brain-dead populace we have.

[-] Tm12@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

TBF I consider myself not brain dead and I did not read the questions in the booth. Referendums should be capped on topics. This was what they had wanted.

[-] OliveBrittle@piefed.ca 3 points 3 days ago

A number of the questions had confusing wording, if you're a voter whose main concern was question 10, then for half the other questions you're basically left wondering what the hell they're talking about if you're not a voter that's deeply engaged.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 16 points 3 days ago

I was incredibly stressed about this.

Especially with the voter list leaks, the mail in voting issues, and then yesterday I was hearing voting stations were opening late and running out of ballots.

Just too much fuckery, but I’m happy people got out there and dealt with the lines and issues and voted.

[-] 1egg4u@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago

No they didnt, because Alberta is full of fucking idiots who voted yes to the other 9 which had some super bullshit racist questions that all were soaked in seperatist dreck

This went exactly as intended for them. My disappointment is immeasurable.

[-] swordgeek@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago

Albertans also voted in favour of five racist questions, and four 'stick it to the east' ones as well. It wasn't that proud of a day for this province.

[-] grte@lemmy.ca 12 points 3 days ago

No surprise to me, but nevertheless, thank goodness.

[-] spacegoat@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Once traitors are comfortable making themselves known, they don’t just go away. Deal with them now Canada, or ignore them at your peril.

[-] OliveBrittle@piefed.ca 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

For people whose main takeaway from this is that the other nine questions won out, I really need to remind people that the main question here was question 10 (the remain, or start the separation referendum question), and that if you weren't deeply politically engaged, a lot of the other questions would confuse the hell out of you on first glance.

The immigration questions won out between 15 to 20 points. Compared to 51 points for question 10, that's not a lot. Question 10 was so much of the draw that poll workers like myself were mandated to count those votes first. The average person isn't as educated on the other questions as question 10, and as such, people often don't know why the immigration questions are bad while thinking they're completely reasonable on first glance.

Question 3 for example, there's been an influx of international students using food bank resources. The average person looks at that and says "why are you here if you can't support yourself" and gets frustrated with the students rather than the government for giving those students a false benchmark for financial stability. Others know of Temporary Foreign Workers taking a bunch of entry-level jobs and while they rightfully blame the government on that front, they wrongfully blame the workers instead of corporations that abuse both their rights as workers and the Labour Market Impact Assessment. A person not deeply involved in politics would look at question 3 and say "yeah, makes sense considering current circumstances" until you explain to them why that's bad.

Alberta's Voice ran "kNOw the nine" campaign. The campaign that took off was Forever Canadian, which was headed by someone else. The reach the campaigns had wildly differed, and the education needed for the former was a steep uphill climb. That was intentional by the UCP, and I genuinely think that if people were more properly educated about these things and if the education needed wasn't so steep, that these results would be different.

Tim Hortons posted an ad for hiring on Facebook.

My comment was

"So your corporation is done wrongly enriching yourselves on the back of Canadians by abusing the temporary foreign worker program to boost corporate profits, and now that you can no longer do so you're ready to hire white people again" (yes I was being intentionally provocative with the white comment)

They deleted the campaign. (E: not taking personal responsibility. Many people felt exactly how I did, I just was the one that verbalized it)
