Apparently few remember, but Thom Tillis voted to confirm Pete Hegseth, allowing JD Vance to come in and resolve the tie in Hegseth's favor:

[Hegseth's] confirmation was threatened by Senator Thom Tillis, who told Senate majority leader John Thune the day before that he would not vote for Hegseth on the basis of his sexual assault allegations. Persuaded by Vance, Tillis expressed support for Hegseth on X minutes before the vote. His confirmation was the second in US history to be decided by a vice president

All Dems voted no, and all Republican senators but Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Mitch McConnell voted to confirm.

Had Thom Tillis stood his ground, we would have a different SecDef (yeah, I'm not endorsing that renamed "Secretary of War" shit) and possibly we would not be in Iran right now, Ukraine would have our full support, and our list of supposed undesirables in the military would not read like Hegseth's personal Grindr profile. For starters.

Fuck Tillis and all these spineless Republicans that suddenly find a voice once they have nothing to lose. They've failed to serve their constituents and this country again and again just to appease Trump and avoid his toddler tantrums when someone doesn't fall inline lockstep. Fuck'em all.

“retiring Republican”

Have any biologists had a chance to study this? Have there been any other incidents of invertebrates suddenly growing a spine in certain situations?

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago

He didn't find a spine. he's seeing where things are going and trying to get out before people realize he's helped us go there.

Shrink wrapping them together and shipping them to the Hague should be the minimum we strive for.

[-] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

I dunno. can we air drop them over Tehran? They want to fight a war so badly, let them, I say.

Reminder on how US law treats the authority of international courts. This law applies to military, elected officials, and appointed officials. Gives the sitting president the authority to invade and remove these Americans from the court.

That’s fucking adorable.

Firings?

Trials.

Hegseth needs that Tribunal yesterday.

[-] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

Firing?

Out of a cannon?

Into the sun?

Pretty please?

[-] spongebue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

To shreds, you say...

[-] D_C@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Nope.
They should be fired from the cannon slowly in to a woodchipper. Feet first, and ssssssllllllooooowwwwwlllllyyyyyy!!!

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

They should consider themselves lucky if they only get fired, instead of marched off to prison.

Trump will escalate the war with Iran sometime between the election and the seating of the new Congress. Then they will call any push against them an attack on the troops.

Trump cannot help but escalate at this point because he is in an escalation trap with Iran and his rapidly falling support pushes him to be more extreme.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

I agree. No matter what happens during the election it will be an absolute shit show.

Trump may do exactly what you describe but I think the people who are swing voters or were somehow to apathetic to vote in 2024 will see through that.

I'm more concerned about a false flag attack on civilians. I don't think it benefits Iran to attack us directly but I'm not sure most people would accept that it wasn't them if something happens. And with most (if not all) major news outlets under conservative control the narrative will be easier to manage.

Yeah, good luck with that.
