Americans will understand this in 80 years when Mar a Lago burns down.

[-] SailorFuzz@lemmy.world 44 points 5 days ago

Why wait 80 years? Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today.

[-] Neverbeaten@lemmy.world 22 points 4 days ago

It might actually be underwater in 80 years.

[-] nwtreeoctopus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago

Burning it while it lays on the new seabed will be all the more satisfying.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip -5 points 4 days ago

It's on a mountaintop, 1800m above sea level. Worst case sea level rise is 2m by 2100.

[-] mill_city@lemmy.zip 22 points 4 days ago

I think op was talking about maralago. There are no mountains in Florida.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 3 points 4 days ago

Oh yeah that makes more sense

[-] Neverbeaten@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Correct. I should have specified.

No, it was pretty apparent which one you meant

[-] thallamabond@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Literally the flattest state.

[-] RaoulDuke25@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 4 days ago

Just Mountain Dew

[-] Taldan@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

I don't believe Americans will turn Mar-A-Lago into a reminder of the horrors of fascism

[-] TeaWithDani@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

No need to turn it into anything, its gaudy enough already to inspire horror.

[-] kalman@dboft.com 27 points 5 days ago

I hope no one is hurt putting out the fire.

[-] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 23 points 5 days ago

I hope no one is ~~hurt~~ putting out the fire.

Are you a Nazi or just ignorant?

From the article:

It serves as "a cautionary reminder of the abysses of the inhumane Nazi dictatorship"

It's a monument against Nazis, and you want it burned down

It's like celebrating Auschwitz being burned down. Only Nazis and people ignorant of its current use would celebrate

It’s a tourist attraction where people can gawk around and tell their friends they visited a place where Adolf Hitler used to chill and plan evil things with his evil minions.

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 1 points 3 days ago

Build the museum in its ashes.

[-] 5ibelius9insterberg@feddit.org 13 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Instead of throwing insults, know what you are talking about first. It’s a propaganda building.

Built by the Nazis.

Used by the Hitler to present himself as animal friend and lover of nature. And by other Nazis for representative and diplomatic events. About today’s use of this building: Wikipedia article

“The Kehlsteinhaus interior offers little information about its past. Photos displayed and described along the wall of the sun terrace document the preconstruction location and later history.[23]“

The building now is owned by a charitable trust and operates as a restaurant, offering indoor dining and an outdoor beer garden. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its historical significance.

I don’t think it’s fitting to use it as “cautionary reminder”. It’s also quite absurd to compare it to Auschwitz.

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 8 points 4 days ago

It's a restaurant. Based in a vacation home for a monster. What exactly is the cautionary messaging here?

[-] sns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 5 days ago

I hope no one was hurt starting the fire.

Anybody feel like going and grabbing an archive link?

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk -5 points 5 days ago

They usually pick an archive site that serves malware. Nowt wrong with the BBC link though.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 11 points 5 days ago

Well, you can't read it without subscription, so there's one thing wrong.

maybe you can't

The Eagle's Nest was still on fire early on Saturday By Patrick Jackson

Published 3 hours ago

Police in the southern German state of Bavaria have detained a suspect during a fire at Adolf Hitler's Alpine mountain retreat, the Kehlsteinhaus, also known as the Eagle's Nest.

Dispatchers in Traunstein received a fire alarm from the building at 21:15 local time (19:15 GMT) on Friday and firefighters found it engulfed in flames.

Difficult terrain was hindering efforts to extinguish the blaze and it was still burning early on Saturday, police said, with some 200 emergency personnel deployed. There were no reports of injuries.

The Nazi dictator used the retreat, which lies above the town of Berchtesgaden, as a part-time seat of government and met commanders there to plan the invasion of the USSR in 1941.

Hitler also used the area as a backdrop for propaganda films portraying him as a lover of animals and nature.

A criminal investigation is under way to determine whether the suspect is connected to the fire.

Completed by the Nazis in 1938, the Eagle's Nest escaped destruction after their defeat in 1945.

Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination and houses a mountain inn.

It serves as "a cautionary reminder of the abysses of the inhumane Nazi dictatorship", according to its official website, external.

During World War Two, Hitler and his followers were responsible for the deaths of tens of millions of people, including the mass murder of European Jews.

[-] decolo@piefed.social 3 points 5 days ago

TWO HUNDRED fucking personnel deployed to save the hitler dacha?

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 20 points 4 days ago

Two hundred people deployed to save an historical building that had an exhibition about the crimes committed there. Every opportunity to remember all the faces of evil is important. I don't understand why people celebrate history going up in flames.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

As long as you're careful to distinguish actual historical monuments (e.g. this) from propagandistic fake ones built long after-the-fact (e.g. Confederate statues built in the 1950s).

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 1 points 4 days ago

Of course. But I would still see value of preserving those in the right context - for example, a Rewriting History Museum instead of a public square.

[-] decolo@piefed.social 6 points 4 days ago

I don't explicitly think it should be burned down, but I do know of specific examples of modern day Nazis who still venerate it and just don't have the equipment to process that it's intended to be cautionary and not a shrine to hitler.

Fascists watch Starship Troopers and come away impressed by the cool soldiers shooting bugs. those people are not going to be shamed by a scoldy exhibition with pictures of concentration camp dead. They want more of that!

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 10 points 4 days ago

There's such a thing as 'Erinnerungskultur' in Germany, in which it's considered important to remember the history so we don't repeat it.

Otherwise this place has been basically a restaurant for years that doesn't really capitalize on the historical aspect iirc.

[-] decolo@piefed.social 1 points 4 days ago

Real talk, you don't casually pop out for dinner to hitlers remote mountain bunker that has been converted to a restaurant. That is a very specific, politically filtered clientele.

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I also wanna say that I -as a communist- would've also gone there because of the historical associations, because I'm fascinated by history and enjoy the idea of "[person] was here [x] years ago", like when I visited the place John Lennon got shot.

[-] decolo@piefed.social 1 points 3 days ago

I hear what you're saying, but I don't care how good the food or view is at mar-a-lago after the American dictator dies, I don't think I'd enjoy patronizing it.

I wouldn't have had this perspective 5 years ago, but the world is not trying to conceal its evils any more.

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

yeah mar a lago does not in any way constitute an interesting place or a connection to an interesting person so fire away

[-] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

It's a gasthaus on top of a mountain. You go there after hiking up a mountain. The clientele is hikers who like the view.

[-] fullsquare@awful.systems 8 points 5 days ago

maybe something else nearby could catch fire

[-] decolo@piefed.social 1 points 4 days ago

That's a valid point.

[-] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 3 points 5 days ago

Only if you have the misfortune to be in US/CAN.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 4 days ago

I'm in US and can read it just fine.

Diagnosis: Skill Issue.

[-] MouldyCat@feddit.uk 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

oh really? I wish they'd do that in Britain too. Instead they're talking about forcing everyone to pay for the BBC if they watch Netflix or Youtube.
