/Collective insanity Is This?

THEIR LOGO LITERALLY LOOKS NAKED WITHOUT THE HORN

I swear to god i remember the cornucopia (or horn of plenty)

What is their actual objection to it being the Horn of Plenty??

I feel like if they just leaned into it it would be the best sales-boosting/marketing coup of alltime!

In July 2023, a Snopes reporter said that a search of newspaper advertisements between the 1920s and 2020s revealed none that depicted a cornucopia, despite many consumers recalling that the trademark did contain one.

Its a pretty serious weird coincidence that basically everyone remembers it

"Basically everyone" "remembers" things that are incorrect quite frequently.

Memory is especially egregious. Human memory isn't like computer memory where things will stay exactly as they were years or decades into the future unless there's some freak accident.

Human memory is mostly bits and pieces that get recreated when those memories are recalled. The brain fills in the gaps using rules of thumb and patterns that "make sense".

If you're interested, you can look into research on the fallibility of eye witness testimony -- Elizabeth Loftus is/was a key researcher in that area.

Computer memory (main memory anyway) is rewritten every time it's read ...nay even more so it's refreshed even when it's not read

And flash drives, you probably aren't getting a decade out of one of them without bit flips

Do people call "storage" memory these days? It's not a perfect analogy from a technical perspective, but some people think that their memories are as unchanging as the files they store in their devices.

Oh ffs. Every time this question gets asked, I fail to find the article showing they did have the cornucopia, with verifiable pictures, and tried to cover it up for some reason.

Yes, it's a conspiracy. No i don't remember why. Products with the cornucopia still exist, but they're rare, no longer being made and with ai crap, unreliable proof even if still found.

I don't know if they keep trying to erase the proof or it's just the internet randomly and naturally burying it through its regular activity, but all I can do is tell you it was real and you're not misremembering it.

History will likely be erased on this one, eventually.

Like why do they care so much? Just admit it right?

Gotta be up there on dumbest american psyops oat

I'm confused both by why fotl would deny it, and why people care so much about it. The "why do they care?" Argument goes both ways.

With that being said: the "investigation" that Snopes did only covered their logo in adverts and media.... That doesn't indicate that it was never used, just never used in that context.

There's plenty of examples around the internet of people having FOTL stuff with the horn. Call it photoshopped or fake or whatever, it's possible that they used it for tags and stuff, but never in ads or media.

In my mind it's equally possible that there was a counterfeiting operation that added it, and made pretty convincing knock offs....

I don't know the truth, and I won't claim to, but what Snopes found doesn't mean that the version with the horn didn't exist. Bluntly, I don't care enough to figure it out, so that's the end of the line for me. Have fun everyone.

Its all just so inscrutable. Its an impressively naturally evenly balanced issue. But i dont grt what their incentive is to not only demy it but also to refuse to capitalize on it.

The whole thing makes zero sense. "Cornucopia" (whatever the term is) is literally in their patent or trademark filing(s), just take the fuckjng W, jesus

According to a commenter in one of the past topics made about this, it's possible it is/was an experiment in regards to the Mandela effect and whether it can be weaponized in some way. Disinformation, altering public perception, actively changing recorded history in small, but directed ways for the purpose of discrediting or whitewashing historical figures, attacking activism talking points or destroying protester credibility.

The cornucopia was supposedly used because enough time has passed since its production period and most fabrics have naturally degraded by now. Any remaining samples can be considered as knock offs, deliberately made now or even ai hallucinations (Wait, this was before ai lies became a thing). It is a small and common symbol many have seen, yet paid little attention to because it was small and common. So many tiny details in life, how can we remember them all correctly? And that's how it supposedly works. Take a detail we take for granted and can be changed, then remove or switch it to imply something else.

But here's the rub. People do wrongly attribute historical details to the wrong people simply because it's popular. An example being the "Let them eat cake" quote, wrongly attributed to Marie Antoinette, yet actually being a disparaging remark made by some random revolutionary author who really didn't like her.

So even though someone proved the cornucopia existed and was forgotten again and again, the conspiracy remains just a theory. Because it's silly and simpler to believe there was no cornucopia in the first place.

Even if there is a conspiracy, it's a silly one as you say. It seems like a lot of work for nothing, with large chances it would fail. And yet, its theoretical purpose has far-reaching connotations. When we can no longer trust our own memories or even the small proofs we find, those who control our knowledge can shape it to fit their purposes at leisure.

I feel like I need a tinfoil hat on to be reading this but in general I agree that this seems plausible, if only because it wouldn't be nearly the dumbest or weirdest thing I've heard of the government or a corporation doing

[-] lath@piefed.social 2 points 6 days ago

Exactly my feeling at the time and it's why I bought into it.

Is it real? I honestly can't say anymore. But I'll keep remembering that one dude who went searching for old clothes for months just to find the cornucopia he was sure existed and eventually proved himself right.

[-] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 week ago

I had underwear with the horn of plenty.

I have the same memory, but outside of a disturbance in the Force, it must be because the cornucopia has such a strong presence each year as a Thanksgiving background, so a group of fruit suggests it even when it's not there.
