That's because users are trying to use normally accepted folding methods and not Apple approved proprietary iPhone folding methods.

Looks like Apple should have made sure their precision engineered hinge was also accurate engineered.

[-] storkflying@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

I haven't heard an accuracy vs precision joke for years, that's brilliant :D

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 9 points 3 days ago

Would you make a quality product if you knew that people would buy it no matter what?

[-] KeithD 7 points 2 days ago

Yes, which is one of the many many reasons I'll never be a billionaire (unless the currency devalues by more than three orders of magnitude).

Finally a massive flaw that apple can't lie about or hide from the public, like they usually do. What is sad is they're already about 3-4 years behind Android in releasing a foldable device and they still somehow fucked it up

[-] WesternInfidels@feddit.online 167 points 3 days ago

Every phone maker seems convinced that if they can be the one to make this work, they'll be the champion of world forever, or something.

I can't understand why a user would even want this. How many users do want this?

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 129 points 3 days ago

I like the idea of it, but I can live without it.

A foldable phone has the benefits of a tablet (screen size) and a phone (more compact), allowing you to alternate between the two at will. I can see the appeal.

[-] JohnEdwa@sopuli.xyz 23 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Kinda. They tend to result in a phone that is too big to be comfortable, that open to a tablet that is too small to be all that useful.

The Duo has a cover screen that is 5.4 inches and it unfolds to 7.6", while being thicker, bigger and heavier than a 18 pro max with a 6.9" screen. Is the pro max a tablet already then, it's quite dang close in screen size after all.

You can't understand why someone would want phone that becomes a tablet? Really?

[-] FrChazzz@lemmus.org 35 points 3 days ago

For real. Just last weekend I was at a conference and realized that I left my tablet at home and the agenda/workbook for the event was PDF. I was pinching and scrolling with my iPhone while my colleague next to me opened up his Galaxy Fold and was reading everything fine. I mean, yeah, it's not a common need for me, but there's definitely use-cases for this--especially for people who have to read digital documents on the go a lot and don't want to have to carry extra devices just to do so.

I do. Consolidating my phone and tablet into a single device would be very convenient. Adding support for an external monitor, keyboard and mouse to replace my laptop would be even better. I didn't buy a Duo not because I don't want the product, but because I know they won't work well for another few iterations (at least).

I am an old IT guy. This was a hard and fast rule: Never buy version 1.0 of anything.

[-] SynAcker@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 3 days ago

Same goes for the first model year of vehicles

This shouldn't be a 1.0 version of a phone with a folding screen, though, android phones have been doing this for a loooong time now and they are not and haven't been flaky tech for some time now. I guess you're right about Apple and this SKU, though. A bit surprising, I'm not an iPhone person but I always expect them to do pretty rigorous QA.

Hardly matters, the sort of people who buy such a pointless, gimicky and overly expensive phone will keep buying Apple regardless.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 22 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I like tech, I think it's cool, and expensive features almost always become cheap or standard features in the future.

When someone figures out how to do this well, I will definitely want a folding phone. Although I want a phone that folds half the size of a normal phone, not a normal phone size that folds out to a tablet.

[-] vithigar@lemmy.ca 20 points 3 days ago

You already got a joking reply to this with someone mentioning a regular flip phone, but Samsung does actually make what you're asking for, the "Z Flip" line of phones, which have been developed in lock step with the more popular Z Fold series. Most recent is the Z Flip8 from this year.

they make those

[-] mantricx@lemmy.world 16 points 3 days ago

Samsung Fold and Pixel Fold have been getting it reliable for years now.

But if you want half size, look at the Razr and its like $500 not $2000.

That's the exact failure that happened on the bend test for Zak on JerryRigEverything. Crazy it's happening without the full-muscle stress test.

[-] wjrii@lemmy.world 70 points 3 days ago

The article says that the best guess is there's a physical part of the hinge about there that must be perfectly aligned, and if it isn't then that specific screen is eventually doomed.

[-] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 46 points 3 days ago

Yeah, this boils down to a manufacturing engineering problem. There's some process happening during assembly that's resulting in these slipping by... or being allowed by.

EDIT: And I mean, yeah, the thing could've been designed better from the get go, but that ship sailed long ago.

Apple probably didn't plan for their planned obsolescence to work THIS quickly.

Precision engineered hype and sales.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago

99% of the budget went on advertising, 0.9% went on tokens to Vibe code the engineering and 0.1% on manufacturing

[-] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 59 points 3 days ago

Tbh, I figured Apple taking their time on these was because they were trying to improve the engineering over the Android folding screen offerings.

Now I wonder if they just wait because everyone assumes Apple would try and make it better, and then they just sell a bunch + the Apple tax, even though it's just as bad of a product. Like, the marketing team just saying: "wait a couple years".

It's a first generation product. Remember the first Galaxy Fold and what a disaster that was? It's kinda like that (only more expensive).

Apple should have the benefit of hindsight but apparently not.

[-] MadBigote@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

Apple ia not brraking into a new segment with new tech like Samsung did. Foldable phones have been around long enough for them to sell a working phone.

This is hilarious to me because all I hear from Apple fanbois about why iPhones are always years behind Samsung et al on new features is because "Apple don't release things until they work properly"

I'm so glad I never fell for this gimmick. The tech looked sketchy from the beginning.

it's folded 10,000 times by an expert Japanese phonesmith before it reaches the consumer. It does make it a little brittle but do you want a phone that's not been properly broken in? It's just the price you pay for tradition and brand loyalty.

[-] echodot@feddit.uk 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

So the maximum number of folds it could take was 10,006. Unlucky.
