I’ve never understood this, steal your kids treats? You’re an adult and can just buy the candy when ever you want.

Why do wives eat French fries off their husbands' plates when they could just order their own? Because it doesn't count if you didn't order it. Those fries may as well be in international waters. Same with kids candy.

My kids don't need to be eating all that candy, it's no good for them. I'm making a sacrifice. For them.

Yeah, my kids are well aware of the Dad Tax. They're prepared for life.

[-] gastroglizzy@piefed.social 3 points 4 hours ago

One or two is a tax. Robbing the whole bag of "the good stuff" is being an asshole.

It's hard to buy candy for yourself as an adult because you know it's nothing but love handles and tooth decay in shiny wrappers. But if it comes into your orbit once a year without buying it, it's tempting.

Of course, when my kid was small he basically didn't bother eating it at all. He'd get like 100 pieces of candy and they'd linger around until Christmas. When I was a kid we'd get pillowcases full and it'd be gone in days. Not sure if that's a generational thing or if my son was just not very motivated by sweets.

As a kid, I’d hoard Halloween candy and eat it one bit at a time over the course of months. My parents never threw it out, and I’d typically still have some of last year’s candy when the next Halloween came round. Chocolate never goes bad, in the sense that it is dangerous to eat it— it just separates out which might not taste as good, but if you don’t mind that, it’s fine to keep around. I was fine with it. And of course, my favorites were always the hard candies and other sugar based ones, not the chocolate anyway.

That was me in the 80s. I think part of it was that my mom was a health nut so we’d never get that stuff except for holidays and the impulse was to save it. But I’d forget about it and she’d throw it away at Christmas. Same thing with Christmas candy, throw it out at Easter.

One of my kids is allergic to milk & gluten so their candy stash is basically always reduced by 30-70%.

If I give that candy to the other kid (thing 2 is much younger) it’s not healthy for anyone to eat that much candy. Let alone someone less than 5.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

You're basically taking a bullet for them.

[-] crandall@lemmy.today 6 points 8 hours ago

Buying them is admitting you have a problem.

[-] gibmiser@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

Have you seen how much candy kids get at Halloween? Its too much. You gotta spread that shit out - or take some away. Its just too goddamn much.

[-] troybot@piefed.social 2 points 4 hours ago

It's better for your teeth if you eat it all at once. Or at least that's what I tell myself.

[-] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 8 hours ago

The inclusion of the full name and capitalizing the Peanut Butter Cups is telling me this is an ad. So is the unnecessary inclusion of the photo.

I feel like a person making a joke would have just said peanut butter cups, or reeses cups, or maybe just reeses.

A non-marketing individual would have been more likely to find a photo of someone with chocolate on their face, rather than a glamour shot of a twix.

And only speculation, but the person in the profile pic doesn't look like the type to make this age-group of joke.

All of that aside, the basis of the conversation is it's own issue, it implies that both parents have gone through their kids candy for their own reasons, and one found the results interesting enough to bring it up later. Not that this is an actual scenario that happened.

Thank my TED.

That's not how you spell Reese's, you silly goose.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

If it really were marketing copy, they'd spell it right.

[-] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I'm not sure if I agree. They're pretty shady with all this stuff. My brother's general counsel at some major candy maker, and for some reason his role at one point included content approvals, and they're just sneaky. Now I'm interested in confirming if that's one of their tricks.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

Improper trademarking is a pretty big no-no.

[-] SayJess@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago

Wait. There are people that actively seek out Twix? Fake news.

[-] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago

We're all noticing the veiny texture on the candy, right? No? Just me? K

[-] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

That's what they look like, or how they used to look anyway. I feel like the ridges have gotten smoother in the last decade.
