I'm counting on it. It's kind of unfair that I have to do a PhD to become a villain.

[-] Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

Nah, according to my one daughter, (ME PhD), is when you get your masters, they let you play with all the cool toys. If you get your PhD, they let you be boss and take all the toys away from you.......

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 5 points 8 hours ago

Doctors Strange and Who will co-author a paper that differs.

[-] Crashumbc@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago

Dr. Strange while "good" is a asshole

[-] Katrisia@lemmy.today 8 points 10 hours ago

Well... Victor Frankenstein wasn't a doctor in the book; he was a young student and he never achieved any degree. The "doctor" thing comes from the movies.

[-] yupa@infosec.pub 1 points 6 hours ago

I also dispute whether he was a villain.

[-] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 12 points 15 hours ago

Anakin had neither (╥﹏╥)

[-] nippler@altgag.net 7 points 14 hours ago

if you leave out some letters from "Darth" out, tho...

[-] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Truly a left made man.

[-] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 10 points 17 hours ago

So true, who thinks 'I want 10x more of that' after the masters dissertation?. You think 'I need a vacation but I have no money and live in moms basement now

But that's another story...

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 5 points 11 hours ago

I had a scholarship for the Ph.D. If it's free, it's for me. 7 years of pure suffering for FREE!

[-] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 2 points 6 hours ago

Free? I get paid for it, most PhD "students" here are university employees. I have to do some tutoring, but I can also get students that work for me.

[-] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

Still sounds like a job but good on you!

[-] luciferofastora@feddit.org 3 points 9 hours ago

What'd it get you? A sense of pride and accomplishment?

[-] Washedupcynic@lemmy.ca 1 points 7 hours ago

Pretty much. Call me Dr. Washedupcynic. My current field doesn't use my degree. Graduated in 2008 during the recession. Could not find a job in my field, so leveraged my degree to get into a weakly adjacent field. It's wild getting calls from places I applied to in 2012 in my field trying to pitch me positions that pay less than what I make now, in a position that doesn't require an advanced degree.

I feel bad for Master Baits tho

[-] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

No it feels good bro

[-] somebody2152@lemmy.world 54 points 1 day ago

Reminds me of:

As someone with a PhD, I can confirm both images are accurate.

[-] NeonNight@lemmy.world 9 points 23 hours ago

Sending this to my wife who stopped her PhD program due to shitty advisors and ended up with a Master’s instead

[-] socsa@piefed.social 38 points 1 day ago

This is literally true because you cannot get a PhD if you don't learn to navigate University politics, which is the singular largest corrupting influence in academia. If you fail to do that, they literally give you a Masters as a consolation prize for preserving your integrity.

I beat the system by skipping the Master's on the way to my PhD and then not getting the PhD in the end. Smoked a hell of a lot of dope, though.

You need a good guy with phd to stop the bad guy with phd

[-] EndOfLine@lemmy.world 48 points 1 day ago

Something that always bothered me about comics is how the bad guy was almost always the intellectual who used their brain to solve / create problems while the good guys solved conflicts by punching things.

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 30 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Why? That's what american culture is.

We think scientists are evil and football players are heroic.

The only time american culture lauded scientists was post ww2, but that didn't last very long and the national push for sciences declined by the 70s.

We also love rich and famous people, don't forget.

Doctor Who Vs The Master. Hmm. Have we been watching a show about a villain all along?

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

Even the The Doctor acknowledges that sometimes he does things that end up being evil in the end. The master doesn't care he just wants his best friend back.

Hello? Yes, this is dr dog

[-] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 56 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The PhD process is so miserable and long that it will turn any sane person to the dark side, yes.

And if you stay on in academia rather than get out of it, well you'll end up pure evil, but at least you'll be cloistered and can't really do any harm to the real world.

Mrw this mf forgot Dr. Evil

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

He has an MD, not a PhD. He went to evil medical school.

[-] Airfried@piefed.social 24 points 1 day ago

If only they awarded Anakin the rank of master he would've never become Doctor Vader.

Professor X, Bruce Banner (Hulk), T'Challa (Black Panther), Hank Pym (Ant-Man), and several others also have PhDs.

[-] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 13 points 1 day ago

Hank Pym made Ultron, T'Challa's a king whose country hordes potentially life saving tech, Banner needs to chill, and Xavier has done and continued to do some insanely unethical shit

I don't know what Professor X's doctorate is in, but it sure as hell wasn't ethics.
