Staring at the sky under street lights: can’t see shit captain

The urge to walk beyond the streets, beyond the lights, until you all you can hear is your footsteps, until you can see the shadow you cast in the moonlight and feel your inherent place power and purpose return, the peace and strength of unity, at least for a moment free from the demands and machinations of their system

Man, I used to do that all the time as a young'n

Work put a stop to it what with less available time, working mostly nights, and being exhausted when off. But back then? I could walk two towns over and back, and never look at my feet. The stars, the trees, all the smells of small town existence, the critters spreading word of my passage; there was too much to take in to watch the ground in front of me.

One of the best things I miss when working in shifts and having the night shift was hands down walking home from work when the whole city was basically asleep around you at like 4-5 am. In the summer we used to even go for night swims with the co-workers after our shifts, once we even went fishing. It was fun.

These days while it sounds like a good time and nostalgia has done it's thing to my memories of that time, I'm too old for night shifts. I don't think I could even stay awake past 11 pm anymore without having to recover for the rest of the week from it. Most of the things that made the night time excursions fun was the fact that I was still in my 20s and didn't feel the effects of lack of sleep as easily as these days.

I'm a creature of the night amd let me tell ya:
If you have never done stuff like this you should give it a try sometime. I love it.

Midnight cycling through the sleeping city is so fun.

"Up to no good" -- some boomer probably

This urge had been with me all my life. Periodically I dream about walking through empty streets with no people at all like in the beginning of "28 days later".

It always feels a bit somber, like I imagine a missing limb would ache to remind that it used to be there, but calm and comforting at the same time.

I can walk wherever I want, look anywhere I want, without consciously thinking about the direction of my gaze, unafraid to glare and stim and dance and yell and sing, right in the middle of the street. Finally, the inner voice policing my being for not being "normal enough" goes quiet.

As soon as the feeling of liberation barely touches my soul, I wake up.

It’s a nice thought. If that were feasibly safe to do.

That's what I was thinking. I'm sure women would love that if there wasn't a high chance of being assaulted.

I'm a big tall hairy man and even I'm scared to in my city.
