I'm still waiting, reddit, why are you still accessible publicly? Second thoughts, spez? Seems this is taking longer than other announcements, like when they locked old.reddit behind a login. I saw the login prompt pop up on desktop once, and never again after that.

Reddit has repeatedly proved that they do not care about their users, regardless of what they say. No one who has left is eager to get back, they are only trying to catch new users which other social networks are much more effective at.

It also allows us to protect access to Reddit’s extremely valuable corpus of data

That's the real problem, people have to stop giving Reddit their data to monetize before they inevitable kick them to the curve and remove any control they had over their own data.

Only reason I was still there was for my local state and city subreddits. Both of them have a discord now and both also have talks of moving to matrix if discord moves to age verification so I have 0 reason to stuck around.

reddit is moving to "a bot-only experiment"

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 4 hours ago

ahh so a FACEBOOK clone

[-] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 32 points 14 hours ago

There's only one social media site that's still the same as it was a decade ago. The only problem is that it was never good.

[-] HertzDentalBar@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 5 hours ago

It's not the same place it was 20 years ago 😂 I hate how old I fucking feel knowing I was an og /b/tard

[-] Pyon@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

Just because the people have changed doesn’t mean the platform has changed

[-] FinishingDutch@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

How has it changed? I’m genuinely not familiar with it. I know of the spicy reputation it once had, but I rarely see it mentioned anymore these days. I assume censorship or something like it found its way there?

User posts are down, bot posts are up. Go to anything political or US, Israel or Iran news and all you will see are hundreds of homo erotic AI images of Trump posted by bots

[-] jballs@sh.itjust.works 89 points 17 hours ago

“During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week. If this rate of decline continues, current trends would suggest that total DAUqs [or daily active unique users] could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs,” Huffman wrote.

Weird that not allowing people to use your site would lower the number of people using your site.

"People aren't coming to our website so we are going to make it harder for people to come to our website." - The dumbest motherfucker alive (and he's competing with Trump and Altman)

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 4 hours ago

"by forcing people to come to our site by logging in, but making it hard for people to maintain thier prescence here."

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

also trying to not saying the drop is actually openAI not referencing the site as much anymore because banning people that were producing content isnt as good anymore. plus only going after the lowest hanging fruit of bots/spammers.

[-] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 21 points 13 hours ago

It's just shitty that so much useful information is on reddit.

[-] Brimstone@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 hours ago

The people that created that info can recreate it elsewhere

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 11 points 12 hours ago

It's ok. The AI companies will scrape it and spit it out for you.

[-] Anti_Iridium@lemmy.world 8 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

It’s ok. The AI companies will scrape it and might spit it out for you.

Correction bolded, but it was sad that was my first thought too

[-] db2@lemmy.world 11 points 12 hours ago

He's so unbearably dumb...

[-] Almacca@aussie.zone 6 points 12 hours ago

And permanently banning anyone that says anything remotely like what the advertisers don't like.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

and those shadowbans has mostly forced people to just lurk. the serial ban evaders just adapt and make hordes of accounts as normal, although im hearing they are having a difficult time doing so.

[-] crandlecan@lemmy.zip 7 points 14 hours ago

And today in other news, more news at 8!

[-] realitista@lemmus.org 59 points 16 hours ago

And I'm moving to an always logged out experience.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 4 hours ago

reddits trying to re-force a logged in one again. ironically they wanted people to read-only. but that just made people produce less content for google and open ai to scrape.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 15 points 14 hours ago

Not affecting my usage at all.

I'll continue not to use it.

When I stopped using reddit a few years ago, I left my account intact because I had 18 years of posts that included a lot of tech help and other useful information that I figured people might stumble across.

Last night, I used Redact to scramble all 5,521 comments.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago)

They will automatically unredact your stuff unless you prove you live in a gdpr country with a government ID. Which they cannot be trusted with. Heads they win, tails you lose.

[-] tal@lemmy.today 48 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

I'd imagine that that probably increases the magnitude of the effect I mentioned in another news article that I linked to here in another comment, where Google users are just using Google's Gemini LLM rather than searching for information on Reddit. Google will already have incorporated that information into its training corpus for Gemini back when it paid Reddit for access to it, so it makes the LLM the only route for a user to get access to that knowledge.

(Not criticizing your move, just commenting on what I imagine the broader impact will be, particularly if the "logged-in only" move increases the rate of other people wiping their posts and comments as well.)

Anyone who still has an account there, I'd encourage you to use it to gently promote your favourite Fediverse website. There are a significant number of people asking about Reddit alternatives the last couple of days, and sending people directly to a specific suggested site (rather than just saying something like "Lemmy") is more likely to get people to come over and check things out.

It's a shame there's not some big social engagement event going on here right now. Anyone want to start some kind of viral shitpostery?

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 5 points 8 hours ago

They auto remove and ban anyone who mentions the fediverse. Or maybe they’ve backtracked on that?

In other news, Reddit stock is down a whopping 28% today.

[-] TheObviousSolution@lemmy.ca 10 points 15 hours ago

Great, it's removing itself from a lot of free publicity it was getting from search results and basically conceding them to the AIs spez was always using as a strawman.

Spez has all but basically admitted that reddit is a targeted experience now and that the only posts you will see are ads, echo chambers, and rage baits. It has little to do with its origins now.
