In the final days of the US Senate campaign in Michigan, Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is leading in polls, winning praise for taking Donald Trump and his Republican opponent to task with incisive humor, and providing a clear closing message in evocative ads.

But his former Democratic primary opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.), said Friday that while she reiterated this week her decision to support El-Sayed in next Tuesday’s election—a plan not shared by her fiancé, who publicly announced he would vote for Republican former Rep. Mike Rogers—she was demanding concessions from the Democratic candidate, in a statement that sought to tie him to a recent online ad by an outside group.

Y’all remember the week the media learned “excoriated”?

[-] Snowclone@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

I really wish they would unlearn unprecedented.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 day ago

This whole kerfuffel seemed to mainly revolve around a tv ad, which her husband claims is antisemitic. Because it criticizes the amount of money the US sends to Israel. They asked Al Sayed to denounce the ad (which wasn’t even run by him, it was done by a PAC.) So he wouldn’t denounce the ad or whatever. It didn’t look antisemitic to me. Requires quite a stretch to get there.

The democrats sure are trying hard to sabotage themselves yet again.

Btw, was this the same woman who showed up drunk on a local tv morning talk show? Or was that someone else from the Midwest somewhere?

No, that wasn't her, but I understand why'd you be confused.

No, this lady is perfectly sober when she opens her mouth, and stupid falls out, with that stupid fake accent. I've spent a lot of time with Michiganers, and I've never heard any one sound like her. She's wildly exaggerating that accent, the way some Southerners talk like Foghorn Leghorn. She thinks it's charming, but it's stupid and manipulative.

She's a MAGA Democrat. It's people like her that have allowed MAGA to have and use their power.

On the eve of the eve of the eve of our BIG and important election, a unifying moment has arrived, our democratic nominee for U.S Senate disavows the Rebellion PAC ad made by Hasan Piker’s uncle that claims Jews are responsible for America’s economic woes.

Sorry, Haley, but this strawman crap just isn't going to work anymore. No one said "Jews are responsible for America’s economic woes." What they did say is that Trump and Israel's war on Iran has made prices for Americans go up, which is unequivocally true. Criticism of Israel is not necessarily antisemitism, it's not going to work, you're done.

[-] mokus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 27 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Bullshit like that “disavowal” hinge on the idea that “Israel” and “Jews” are the same thing. Putting the sins of Israel on the Jewish people is fucking blood libel all over again.

(And to be clear, I’m agreeing with this comment. Zionist talking points like that are accusing Jews of blood libel by refusing to distinguish an entire global group of people from the fascist government of one country)

[-] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago

Putting the sins of Israel on the Jewish people is fucking blood libel all over again.

Beautifully said.

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 13 points 1 day ago

the idea that “Israel” and “Jews” are the same thing

A.k.a. actual antisemitism. It's the exact same thing as using Islamophobic crap like saying all Muslims are al Qaeda.

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Blood libel is no stranger to them, as they accused hamas of beheading 40 babies in 10/7. Biden endorsed it on camera, then never corrected himself. Fucking pieces of shit, then they endorsed the Times fabricating rape allegations against hamas not long after.

No one of good faith believes their bullshit about this anti salmonism, which is how it's spelt by the way get it right. Semites by the way, are a race of people that includes the Arabs. The Arabs are more semite than the Israelis in fact as they are more european at this point.

Don’t underestimate the stupidity of the right. It could definitely work, because it has in the past.

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 7 points 1 day ago

It's not just the right, I've a good hearted client that fell for the attack ads. She said she was't going to vote for my man El Sayed, then hedged after Obama supported him, she early voted though.

[-] disorderly@lemmy.world 50 points 1 day ago

"Well I couldn't get what I wanted so I think I'll do the cringiest thing imaginable and abandon my entire career", the incredible true story.

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 12 points 1 day ago

What makes you think this will harm her career? Israel breaks their careers, if they keep the faith with their devil boss they can get cushy jobs outside of politics if they have name recognition.

[-] addison@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

"Well I couldn't get what I wanted so I think I'll do the cringiest thing imaginable and abandon my entire career"

I'd watch that anime.

[-] UpAndAtThem@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Slice of life.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 61 points 1 day ago

No shit, she's a neoliberal and she's doing what every neoliberal would do.

That's why she lost the primary. And why she's willing to help Republicans win to stop progress.

This isnt "party infighting" she's a sore loser who cares more about Israel than America. And in 3 months she won't be an elected representative anymore.

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah, I know it was a close race, but I have to wonder how many people are still treating her like a political leader worth listening to after all the crap she's been pulling.

[-] Catma@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago

This just in Karen is willing to burn down entire nation because a person of colour is doing well. In other news water is wet and the sky is blue.

More at 11

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 6 points 23 hours ago

Some More News asked a very relevant question. Karen's fiancee started this whole business by going on air and saying he wouldn't vote for him, which brings up the question "would he have voted for her either?"

[-] Cherries@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

Haley Stevens accidentally going mask off. Her fellow Establishment Dems must be angry with her for giving away the game too early and too blatantly.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 3 points 19 hours ago

Slammed. Slammed! SLAMMED! SLAMMED!

[-] Snowclone@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

Ka-Pow'd even!

[-] TheGoldenV@lemmy.world 42 points 1 day ago

Just rotten all the way through. I’m glad that this is even coming to light.

[-] rumimevlevi@sh.itjust.works 30 points 1 day ago

Where are the people who claimed it is the dsa that sabotage other democrats?

[-] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago

Busy defending a transphobic candidate in some other race probably

[-] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.cafe 21 points 1 day ago

Establishment dems finally get to be the republicans they always wanted to be.

[-] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Democrats haven't raised taxes to pre-Reagan levels yet; they've been Republicans for about fifty years.

The headline should be ‘sore loser says stupid shit’ but I don’t think this even deserves a headline to be honest.

[-] ceenote@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Maybe she realizes the only way she has a future in the Democrat party is if El-Sayed loses and centrists get to keep the "Only moderation can win swing states" narrative alive.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

So what you're saying is, she's a traitor who should be forcibly ejected from the Democratic Party.

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago

Or just be a Republican, since it sounds like she’s only in it for that corporate money, and for her team to win. In which case, who cares what team you’re on. Just switch teams. 🤷

[-] AmyAye@nord.pub 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I mean, in theory if we shift the country back to sanity, she could be a boring regular ass old school Republican.

[-] dudeface@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

If these midterms lead to a series of progressive politicians and policy being passed I really hope the Trump voters realise they caused it, they could have kept the maniac out of office and continued with more center politicians but this choices might swing the country further left than they could have ever imagined

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 8 hours ago

MAGA has made me swing much farther left than I ever was before. They turned an Unaffiliated Center Right Independent into a Radical Leftist. I want Socialism to take over the Democrat Party, I want all MAGAs prohibited from holding office under the 14th Amendment/ Section 3, and I want MAGA to be declared a National Security Threat, and prohibited from existing.

That's been my response to MAGA.

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 6 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago)

I love your optimism. Unfortunately, the Dem Party is led by neoliberals. Neoliberals are conservatives who pretend to hold some progressive views, but actually only represent their wealthy conservative donors.

We will not see widespread progress in the U.S. while we are still infested with conservatives (including neoliberals). There is simply no peaceful solution to an infestation of evil.

This is why they say freedom isn't free. We will need to get our hands dirty and finish Sherman's work to be free of conservatism.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

Good thing it's not up to her.

[-] BigMacHole@thelemmy.club 9 points 1 day ago
