And I just read that Amazon will cancel any order for computer parts and in some cases closing your account.

[-] Avicenna@programming.dev 17 points 17 hours ago

That is what he meant when he said he envisions a future in which big tech is the owner of a tap that distributes skill and information to the rest of the world. This man is a walking crime against humanity.

[-] baltakatei@sopuli.xyz 15 points 17 hours ago

He'd probably call people having money in their savings account wasteful since it isn't in his account.

My home ram is idle a lot, it’s true. But AI datacenter ram is being wasted 100% of the time.

[-] slingstone@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago

This reminds me of a section from a favorite book of mine:

The Encyclopedia Galactica defines a robot as a mechanical apparatus designed to do the work of a man. The marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation defines a robot as “Your Plastic Pal Who’s Fun to Be With.” The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy defines the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as “a bunch of mindless jerks who’ll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes,” with a footnote to the effect that the editors would welcome applications from anyone interested in taking over the post of robotics correspondent. Curiously enough, an edition of the Encyclopedia Galactica that had the good fortune to fall through a time warp from a thousand years in the future defined the marketing division of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as “a bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came.

Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide, #1)

Sam Altman is a mindless jerk who will be the first against the wall when the revolution comes. He'll be right after Elon.

Fuck Sam Altman

[-] doublenut@sh.itjust.works 10 points 19 hours ago

Ya know its funny several people basically made his argument to me here on lemmy when I asked folks about self hosting their own LLMs

[-] Floon@lemmy.ml 30 points 1 day ago

They're going to try to make non-cloud computers illegal in the next decade. Count on it.

[-] daniskarma@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 17 hours ago

They will say that it's to protect the children.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 6 points 20 hours ago

I agree. I have more to say, but not right now.

[-] deliriousdreams@fedia.io 2 points 17 hours ago

"Sam Altman props up chip makers by trying to spin their pivot away from consumer electronics as a net positive, more at 11."

He's doing what they're all doing. Trying to use spin and headlines to prop up a dying industry to keep the bubble from popping. Get the pitchforks.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 43 points 1 day ago

Keeping Sam Altman alive is wasteful.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

tHIEL controls altman through voodoo puppetry, and being the anti-christ just corrupts him from the inside.

[-] Poppa_Mo@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago

Come take it, you rapist weirdo piece of shit.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 23 hours ago

who is associated with thiel an Epstein/rapist associate with trumpa nd ghislaine.

[-] Kenny4tunes@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

Like it or not, I perceive this to be the future; shitty/scary times ahead for us all in these new hardware-scarcity times.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago

Or we all get a bunch of discounts when they have production infrastructure for a bunch of data center AI horseshit nobody wants any longer, driving up the supply of desktop/laptop RAM chips.

Doesn't hurt to dream and hope a little during these dark times.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 6 points 20 hours ago

They will burn it all down and destroy countless bits of precious metal and other expensive material at a high cost before they sell them to us.

[-] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

IDK man, but I think our best-case scenario so far will be HBM graphics cards returning for a while, not the flood of cheap hardware.

[-] Kenny4tunes@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

I'm really sorry, too used to dealing with shitheads on Reddit that only want to offend with passive-aggressive responses, I'm only a recent addition to the Lemmy-sphere, please forgive.

I misunderstood your tone; it's sad that one should have to "hope" for such a thing now!

Altman should have to lease oxygen.

[-] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 13 points 1 day ago

And should be denied it because of his credit history.

[-] 1995ToyotaCorolla@lemmy.world 25 points 1 day ago

For a long time now, silicon Valley has wanted people to only have thin clients just powerful enough to access their cloud services. AI and datacenter build out is the closest they've been to realizing this dream, so of course Altman is going to have this view.

And to that I say go to hell

The damage to the planet from AI Data Centers is a net negative. They would have to totally reform society. Expand green spaces, and reverse climate change in order to be worth while.

They've only done the opposite. We should be rid of them, as they will never pay off as much as they need to.

They are a net debt on humanity.

[-] adarza@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

'waahhhhhhwaawaaahhhh.. you're fucking up my payday'

[-] sammyb@lemmy.ca 187 points 2 days ago

I get his argument logically, but I wonder how many vacant bedrooms he owns. He should give them to my housing collective so they aren't sitting idle all the time.

[-] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago

Extend it further than rooms.

How much MONEY does he have that isn't currently being utilized for an actual useful purpose? Making himself richer isn't useful.

How many doctor's bills could he be paying?

How many mouths could he be feeding?

How many teachers or babysitters could he be paying?

If this ratfuck conman with a messiah complex thinks he can just casually opine that he has a disruptive, new take on property rights, oh well then by all means, lets just entirely drop the pretense and have the totality of this conversation.

He is a power mad socio and psychopath who is to a great degree personally responsible for the coming Greatest Depression.

There is no amount of suffering he can cause that would be too great for a fucked up freak like this who has no morality beyond that which makes him feel satisfied with himself.

Yeah, lets renegotiate the social contract Sam, let's get right on that.

Do you no longer believe in private property, personal possessions, Sam?

We should all just submit our riches to the false machine god, and trust that its technopriest interpreters will guide humanity unto a new dawn?

Give me a fucking break, its like he wants to be ripped to pieces by a righteous mob.

[-] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 88 points 2 days ago

It's a good argument if it was made in good faith.

But he's evil, so it's not in good faith

Who's driving Altman's car and sleeping in Altman's bed when he's at a meeting? Maybe solve the parked-car and empty-building problems first.

[-] MrGeneric@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago

Right? Even if he was correct, no one can possibly trust him when we have already seen how they treat workers of ride sharing, work from home, grocery pick-up, website pricing and “convenience” fees. Bad for the workers bad for the consumer.

This time though will be different /s

This is just the typical capitalist/colonialist/expansionist playbook, and Altman is the kind of dude that would see absolutely no problem in actually, physically taking away the stuff from you. By letting your devices stand idle, you are being selfish and wasteful. He, on the other hand, wants us all to have access to his super awesome product.

[-] reddit_sux@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Absolutely please donate your data centre level hardware to us. We will bless you with good health, not that you deserve but for a few nvidia h100s.

[-] myyass@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago
