Today’s game is Pokemon Soul Silver. I finally picked it back up again to try and make a dent in Kanto. So far I’ve gone and tackled the first 2 gyms.

One thing I really appreciate about the game is they give the Gym Leader’s new designs. It’s definitely cool to see the design change in a way that it feels like time has passed.

I do find that the Gyms here, and too an extent the Gyms in Johto, go really fast. Like, in the span of 20 minutes I had cleared 2 gyms.

I did struggle a little bit with Sabrina so that could have been shorter though.

Speaking of struggling with Sabrina. She pulled so many damn revives out during our fight. It felt like every time I kicked her Alakazam down to 10% health, she’d whip a revive out and undo all my work. Eventually I finally got her sorted though.

I wasn’t really paying attention to her dialog after because I got caught up with something. But my next goal is to figure out where to go next. I’m thinking of popping over to Lavender town if I can though regardless, I like it there.

Are you playing these games via emulation? I've always wanted to go back to them but TBH I have no clue where to start (that's trustworthy).

I got a DS Lite to play on with a flash cart, but Emulation is super easy too. I’m not sure I can provide info on getting a ROM, but there’s MelonDS, which is an emulator I needed very little setup to use. Just run the executable and drag and drop the ROM.

Emulation is super easy and approachable. What wre you hoping to play on?

Just a Windows PC. I've never messed with installing stuff from git or running emulators and IMO it's tough to find legitimate resources to get started.

[-] BreakerSwitch@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah it's probably easier than you think, though some emulators are best obtained from git just because it's the surest way to know you're getting them from the source. Many also have a dedicated website with download links. There are sites for identifying and downloading emulators, the emulator zone comes to mind, but they've been around forever and aren't necessarily the best at being up to date. If there's something particular you're looking for, I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

I'm mostly looking for GBA/DS/3DS for Pokemon games, then PS2 for Castlevania Curse of Darkness.

I don't have a problem with git in general, I'm just not bold or experienced enough to download something that isn't reputable, and I don't know how to find what's reputable 🙃.

Alright, great choices! First off, if you're looking for an all in one solution, retroarch is an emulator front end that then uses cores of other existing emulators, and you can just download everything at once. I don't actually recommend this, because the interface is controller focused and the settings aren't super intuitive to change, but the option is there.

For GBA, mGBA is well regarded and feature rich (it's got settings for, for example, boktai's solar sensor or megaman battle network 4.5's battle chip gate).

For DS, I've previously used desmune, but the consensus seems to be that MelonDS runs much more efficiently.

I haven't run much 3DS emu myself, but I've heard good things about azahar since citra was shut down.

Finally, PS2 the obvious choice is PCSX2, though setup will be a little more complicated. Specifically you'll need to obtain and install BIOS files which ARE Sony proprietary property, and as such not included with the emulator. Internet archive has them (show all > PS2_BIOS.zip > misc bios starting with ps2, depending on your desired region).

I will say, the GBAs low cost of development means the library is full of hidden gems and I highly recommend exploring it. Personally I was a big fan of the Summon Night Swordcraft Story games (make your own weapons with a variety of fighting styles), Kojimas lesser known GBA game Boktai (1, for a variety of reasons, a game about fighting vampires with a solar powered gun), and Astro Boy: Omega Factor (a wonderful beat em up by the much beloved Treasure), though that's just a few with more of an action focus. If you're looking for reccs in a particular genre, feel free to reach out

Series like these, daily screenshots and such, are great!

What's your team composition?

[-] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Honestly, as much as I love going all Smogon and stuff in my teams, the composition is just whatever I feel like.

Right now I have a Gardevoir, a Pidegeotto, a Magmortar, Gyrados (The shiny at the lake of rage), a Sentret, and another one I can’t remember.

[-] Focal@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago

The teams that are whatever you feel like are often the most personal. I like it!

[-] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

It definitely adds a degree of personilzation! When I’m going through the story it makes it feel much more meaningful to me to use Pokemon I like rather than whatever’s strongest. Plus, with the story I feel like any Pokemon can carry you to the finish line, there’s not much that’s difficult about the story.

Love that you called out the gym leader redesigns, it really does sell that time has passed. Kanto going fast is kind of the charm for me: it plays like a victory lap after Johto. Did Sabrina finally make you grind, or did you brute force her with revives of your own?

[-] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

I ended up brute forcing her with revives. I probably should have grinded but by that point I was so invested into the battle I didn’t want to give up.

I like the Kanto victory lap feel. I know it’d be a lot of work but I wish it was some they kept up going into Gen 3 and beyond

[-] anas@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Ah yes, the worst puzzle in Pokémon history. 5 generations of Kanto and it has not changed.

Have you tried Pokémon Unbound yet?

[-] MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I haven’t actually. I think the only Pokemon fan fan I’ve ever really tried is pokemon fusion, which I really should playthrough to the end now that I think about it
