Hey at least it doesn't appear to be written by AI

I don't expect software companies to refrain from using AI altogether, what bothers me much more are the attitude and conduct here. Insulting people who want to move just a little slower? Security second? Forcing AI onto your employees? The fuck?

You are a privacy-focused company. There is no privacy without security. Security comes first. It's that simple.

Every breach seriously hurts your reputation. One big mistake and your business may be wiped out. How can you not see that? Pushing your employees to work faster and use unreliable AI tools is the opposite of what you should do.

This company and others like it can proceed to die wrong

emergence of tech cultists seemed improbable, but so did a lot of awful things that popped up in recent years

The Machine Stops predicted it in 1909, from one of the writers of Don't Create the Torment Nexus.

R.I.P proton. I'll probably use Tuta for mail but I'm not a fan of their calendar. I don't get notifications on android, and I'll really miss the grouping of emails from the same sender on Proton. Either way, I'm not paying $150 CAD a year for AI slop code. If someone's GitHub project had as much AI elbow grease as proton, why would I pay for it?

I am very much disappointed :(

I don't understand how anyone who can code worth a damn could think AI codes better or faster than an engineer. Is their entire software engineering team composed of junior devs??

I legitimately don't think I've seen a single human-made piece of software more abysmal than the shit AI writes. You can tell it from a mile away. It looks ugly, performs terribly, and has 50x more code than it needs to get the job done. Irregardless of the morality or cost of the thing, even the frontier LLMs write code worse than a script kiddy slapping Stack Overflow snippets together piecemeal.

This reeks of a manager who took an introductory Python course and now thinks they know all there is to know about programming. The Dunning-Kruger effect is wild.

nonstandand

Irregardless dates to the late 18th century, but didn't become popular until the early 20th. Synonymous with regardless, the word is widely disliked. Use regardless instead if you wish to avoid criticism.

If the meaning is understood between two people then words use party dog iron party liquidated eqezip.

[-] neo2478@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

So, like I said, a real word.

Documentation and testing are both necessary things that few like doing and historically have often been neglected at the cost of poor communication, inefficiencies and reliability.

english is not my native language but isn't the sentence wrong? i thought "at the cost of" shouod be followed by things suffering from whatever is before

like "I'm prioritizing making money at the cost of my sanity"

we are being left behind here, and it is an existential threat to the success of the mission itself.

there is zero evidence being presented about this btw, its just "everyone is doing it so we must too"

This is not the death of expertise. The LLM is fast. You are slow, but you carry with you a lifetime of experience, judgment calls, and understanding.

except it is because once those engineers quit or retire, the newer and younger people will NOT have learned tbe expertise needed to guide LLMs, do they have any long term vision? this setup works only for the current generation of code savvy employees

The sentence works here, "at the cost of" can refer to the consequences of doing something. So in this case neglecting documentation and testing comes with the cost of communication, inefficiency, etc.

Incidentally as you allude to with their workforce aging out, Proton is prioritizing making money at the cost of their sanity

There is no long-term strategy though. Line's gotta go up in time for the fourth quarter, if it tanks next year that's next year's problem

The sentence may work but it isn't grammatically correct; you'd need either all negatives or all positives.

It should be either:

... neglected at the cost of poor communication, inefficiencies and unreliability.

Or:

... neglected at the cost of communication, efficiency and reliability.

Personally to me the latter sounds smooth and the former still feels clunky. If they wanted to highlight the negatives it would be much better to phrase it something like:

... neglected, leading to poor communication, inefficiencies and unreliability.

Though I've generally stopped using "leading to" because it sounds like AI.

Countries should tax these like companies at least 25% to compensate millions of the unemployed people. This is just beginning of the layoffs.

Companies are exist only for the maximum profit. Profit comes first, so people are disposable resources. Companies uses most of the resources but pay less tax than ordinary people in total!

What makes you say it's not written by AI

[-] XLE@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

I ran it through a couple detectors, including the one recommended by Piefed. Maybe they're wrong, but corporate-speak sure reads similar to it, at least if the ChatGPT-inherited mannerisms of Hank Green are anything to go by.)

It has em dashes in it
