Lately I have been really enjoying mewgenics. Very deep game

Hogs of War

[-] BreadOven@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

So I've only seen a couple hours of gameplay (watching a friend stream it). But Jeanne d'Arc seems pretty interesting. More of a tactical turn-based RPG.

Divinity Original Sin. Old 80s RPGs

I've been playing Disgaea which is really solid.

Golden Sun is my favorite turn-based system of all time. It gets really deep without being too complex to understand. You can get really creative, I always respecced Mia to be a DPS with volcano attacks instead of a water healer like she's supposed to be. And once you know what you're doing, you can change character class in the middle of battle.

The original Persona 3 combat system was also really good. If you played P3P or P3Re, it's not the same. P3 and P3FES are the only ones with the original "one more" system. They ruined it in 4, bloated it in 5, and bloated it beyond recognition in P5R.

Seriously, nobody plays Dragonquest here? Not even 11?

[-] Mistakes@sopuli.xyz 9 points 1 day ago

Worms. Literally any Worms title.

Additionally: Transistor

[-] anas@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Right now, I guess Pokémon counts?

I used to enjoy an Angry Birds spin-off called “Epic”, that was one of the better ones.

[-] amelia@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

I usually don't like turn-based combat at all, but I still enjoyed Clair Obscur, simply because it's an amazing game otherwise. I found the battles to be a bit repetitive after a while, but it was still kinda fun.

X-COM. CRPGs. Pathfinder, BG. Have Ledgerbound and the new FF on the line. The last turn based was Zero Company.

Turn based, visual novels or some light hack and slash games are my usual poison.

[-] TheArtfulLlama@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yes, I’m a huge Final Fantasy fan and turn-based is what I started out with when I first started gaming. My favorite FF game (and video game of all time) is Final Fantasy X, and I remember playing late one night and falling asleep mid-boss battle. Waking up two hours later for the boss patiently waiting for me to kill it was quite nice, ngl.

Also Clair Obscur. I didn’t shut up about that game all last year. It’s just so good, especially for those who prioritize story in video games!

[-] Mycatiskai@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

The first Fallout games. Turn based isometric top down RPG.

They were awesome stories and I spent hours finding as much backstory as I could. By reading and searching every location.

Divinity: Original Sin 2. Combat system isn't perfect (my main criticism is that you can unchain your characters to set your party members up in advantageous positions and then trigger combat, which feels cheaty) but it has some cool mechanics. A lot of elemental interactions, interactions with and creation of different surfaces, factoring in high ground for an advantage, etc. I know BG3 is highly acclaimed also by Larian but I haven't played it so can't attest to that combat system.

Brogue, Hoplite, Stone Soup and other roguelikes

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

Battle for Wesnoth

Heroes of Might and Magic

various card games

basically, any game with significant tactical depth can benefit from well-done turn-based timing

[-] morallysuperior@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago

I came here to say Battle for Wesnoth. Something about the game has kept me hooked for like a decade

[-] pheonixdown@sh.itjust.works 30 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

XCOM (most enjoyed Enemy Within, with Long War, other versions also generally good), just a masterpiece.

Into the Breach, probably the cleanest, and a great theme.

Lots of deck-ish based battlers: Slay the Spire (1 and 2), Backpack Hero, Monster Train

The Last Spell, Battle Brothers

Lots of D&D or adjacent stuff that board/tabletop-like: Balder's Gate 3, Gloomhaven/Frosthaven.

Edit: Wasteland series and Shadowrun series also great.

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Backpack hero doesn't get enough love. I love to see it!

[-] ScriptSage@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Turn based is almost exclusively what I enjoy. I don't need high octane action. I prefer to drink my coffee and solve the combat puzzle

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

With the exception of MMOs, I very nearly play exclusively turn-based games.

The Xcom is the obvious answer, but also a big fan of the card games Slay the Spire/Monster Train. I've loved all of the older final fantasy games but found the action based newer ones like 15 grating.

[-] Jarix@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Birth of the Federation

(Most of my other ones have been said already)

[-] Hudell@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 2 days ago

I generally prefer turn based, so no specific game

Baldur's Gate 3

Divinity: Original Sin 2

For the King 2

[-] expletivedeleted@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

Hell yes. Final Fantasy 6. Fallout 1 & 2. Just a couple off the top of my head. This question is weird.

Baldur's Gate 3 and Expedition 33

First one is a great game, but combat is not the most important feature of the game IMHO.

The other is very good, and the combat is more relevant.

I think that the engagement is being able to build a strategy on how to win, instead of rely more on reaction.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Expedition 33 was so good. The way they updated turn based combat really modernized it imo.

[-] creamfresh@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

You mean the parrying which they borrowed from Super Mario RPG / Paper Mario?

[-] arthur@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

The order of events depends on the characters' status and attributes, and the player can change it using specific actions

[-] creamfresh@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I interpreted those as buffs, but didn’t play nearly enough JRPGs to judge the novelty of this mechanic.

I recently played Chained Echoes, and it was alright for being a fairly blatant Chrono Trigger/SNES era Final Fantasy ripoff. Decent combat, great sprite work, ridiculous story. JRPGs used to be my favorite genre, then they kinda went to shit IMO. They are making something of a comeback with people my age being nostalgic about the good ones making similarly good ones again.

[-] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Baldur's Gate 3.

I normally hate turn-based games with a passion, but they way they handled it is amazing. Combat is visceral, brutal, and rewards the player for spending time to think before they act. You can do some really crazy stuff if you think outside the ~~box~~ prism.

[-] theedqueen@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Chrono Trigger comes to mind

[-] Mikina@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

I'm not usually a fan of turn based combat, but some games that stuck with me from the design point were Mechabellum (if that counts as turn based? It is a (really cool) autobattler), and Into The Breach.

Mechabellum is such a fun game to learn and figure out, and then you watch the battle unfold while thinking about the next steps.

Into The Breach because it tells you what will exactly happen, so it's more of a puzzle - you don't have to learn the enemy to know what they can do, and can just play it reactively. And that's a cool twist. Perspnally not a fan of gating strategy behing a wall of knowledge (i.e TCGs, or Pokemon - if you don't know the enemy cards/moves, you're basically playing blind).

[-] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 4 points 2 days ago

Transistor has an interesting real-time/turn based combat system. You move around in real time, the set your attacks and movement for the attack phase, then back to realtime controls again while the meter for your next turn charges up.

Not to mention the depth of weapon combinations you can put together; it's one of my favorite games. Might be time for another playthrough.

Advance Wars 1 and 2, absolute bangers

[-] TropicalDingdong@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

Advance wars on the gameboy advance. When I was in the navy weʻd do the turn based 4 person mode with fog of war, and just hand it around the ship or when we were on leave.

Really loving Persona 5 Royal. Though I'm enjoying the life sim more than the action, I do still like turn based games, all the way back to FFVII on the PS1.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

I grew up playing the Final Fantasy series starting on the NES. I recently got FF7 remake on steam sale and have been putting time into that, but they did change it from turn based. I think at least FF1 - 11 are solid turn based games. Don't think I played any after 11

The original fallout had fantastic turn based combat, and some of the kill animations were superb

Masters of Orion 2

XCOM series and similar turn based tactical games like Xenonauts 2 and Phoenix Point (most recently Star Wars Zero Company)

Age of Wonders 3

City of Gangsters

Fights in Tight Spaces

Phantom Brigade

Jagged Alliance 1 through 3 (but not Back in Action)

Shadowrun Returns and Dragonfall

Deltarune mixes traditional JRPG turn-based combat with bullet hell action, which is fun. I also like the rock-paper-scissors system from In Stars and Time and Omori, but encounters in those games tend to become repetitive quickly.

[-] Hazmatastic@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

Very rarely. Pokémon and Expedition 33 are the only ones that come to mind outside of more casual games like Super Auto Pets or Balatro

Star Wars knights of the old republic was the only game I enjoyed turn based combat. Generally I don’t like turn based combat. I prefer real time combat like command and conquer or supreme commander.
