Paxton’s lawsuit claims that a get-out-the-vote advertisement campaign from Harris County’s office essentially constitutes reverse racism because it encouraged Black and Latino voters (groups with historically lower access to elections) to vote. Harris County is Texas’s most diverse county, notably housing Houston.

Wait a minute!

Isn't reverse racism... Inclusion?

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 17 hours ago

Technically what they mean by that is racism against white people. You can't simply call it racism because depending on who you ask, you can't actually be racist against white people.

But if there are already a lot of white people voting and black and latino voters have lower turnout, I fail to see how that would even qualify as reverse racism.

A lot of 1st world countries mandate that all citizens vote.

I was surprised by your comment because I only knew about Australia. It’s 21 countries, but not all enforce it:

Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Egypt, Fiji, Greece, Honduras, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Mexico, Nauru, North Korea, Paraguay, Peru, Samoa, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, Uruguay

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_voting

Mexico looks a bit off there with compulsory voting and 52% turnout… but several countries have 90% or more turnout:

Australia, Belgium, Bolivia, Luxembourg, Nauru, North Korea, Samoa, Singapore, Uruguay

(I feel like north korea doesn’t really count though, and Nauru has 12k residents total)

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 10 hours ago

North Koreans don't have to actually vote. Dear Leader is happy to handle that for them. Trump would like to implement a similar system in America.

Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote.

Lord Vetinari would somehow have the top 1% competing to finance public works projects.

New Zealand requires eligible voters to register but not to vote. It's also not enforced though.

[-] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 0 points 9 hours ago

Not surprising. Coward citizens!

[-] Rhaedas@fedia.io 55 points 1 day ago

And we can't have that! Might lose the election if all THOSE people vote.

Man, just look at that incredibly punchable face. I just want to punch it. With a sledgehammer.

Republican playbook ... nobody else remember the Acorn stuff?

[-] khannie@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Foreigner here.... What was the acorn event?

[-] lobut@lemmy.ca 6 points 17 hours ago

Oh, I'm a foreigner too but I follow US politics too much. ACORN was an organization that helped people register to vote.

When Obama was running ... people were calling him a terrorist. So it was called a terrorist organization and then accused Obama or using it to produce widespread voter fraud. Then Breitbart did some piece that was edited to make them look even worse. Long story short ... it was harassed and then financially collapsed.
