Time to ask for a raise.

[-] compostgoblin@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 47 minutes ago

Oh this is very much me. People seem to expect me to know things, and I keep just kind of making it up as I go along, and no one seems to have caught on yet that I'm usually just papering over bullshit with a couple of graphs and a pretty slideshow

You just have to know more than your fellow employees who know less than nothing.

[-] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 24 points 9 hours ago

Making you feel important is the lie...

They will replace you in a heartbeat if you start having requirements

[-] ViatorOmnium@piefed.social 99 points 11 hours ago

Almost every single time I hear someone saying this, it's impostor syndrome talking.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 40 points 10 hours ago

My partner is the worst for this. She's out there killing it and everyone says she's doing great, and then she's like "Oh, I'm just learning still, I don't think I want the promotion they're pushing on me yet". Come on, just acknowledge that you know a lot more than you give yourself credit for and other people see it.

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 6 points 5 hours ago

I was in the sameish boat, meaning I'm still an imposter, but I took one promotion too much. And it burnt me like crazy.

0/10 do not recommend, cried for weeks while hiding under my blanket. The main issue was that I tried to do a good job, but I was just not able to perform in this position.

The happy ending, or at least a happy midterm goal, was that I switched lanes and now perform better in a different job. But taking every promotion that is offered to you can be an error.

Honestly I think the main problem is that when something comes easy to you it's easy to assume it came easy to everyone else and you're not special. Happened to me on a few subjects and I got knocked out of that thought process when I acted like a dick about others not getting it and had it spelled out for me.

[-] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

Things come easy to me, but I don't derive an entitlement to a higher salary from that vs. my colleagues who have to work harder to accomplish less. I do derive an entitlement to negotiate harder vs. my employer though, and sometimes leverage my usefulness to speak up about issues that other colleaguea are afraid to complain about.

Imagine how much more could change for the better if you had a union

[-] raspberriesareyummy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

absolutely, but most colleagues in my line of work are too complacent and/or well-enough paid to even consider starting a worker's council / representation.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, it took me a long long time of working, promotions, a lot of interviewing job candidates from big schools and big companies, and working different jobs to really get where I fit in the skill hierarchy and feel confident.

[-] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 9 hours ago

Remind her that experts are more aware of what they don’t know. So, she has already subconsciously labeled herself an expert.

[-] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 4 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, I remind her of this, and that she’s just not confident at selling herself, and that’s okay.

[-] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 9 hours ago

And everyone does it.

I have a master’s and years of experience. Every day I say something like, “one of these days, I’ll learn how to do my job.”

Life-long learning is a goal with no end destination.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 4 points 9 hours ago

Ask her if she is even good enough to have imposter syndrome?

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 4 points 10 hours ago

I eventually got over that. I feel incompetent pretty often but I doubled my salary in 4 years.

[-] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

Eh. I'm good at my job. But I know I won't be all that good managing people who do my job. They keep trying to force me into it anyway but she virtue of me being here a while.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Exactly. I know nothing and I'm not important, that's how it should go

[-] cattywampas@lemmy.world 40 points 10 hours ago

When I train somebody new and I have to remember the actual rules and SOPs instead of all the ad hoc ones I made up.

[-] Broadfern@lemmy.world 31 points 10 hours ago

“Official” vs. “how the workplace actually functions.”

You know your job so well you have to look up what to formally tell them before teaching them the way people in touch with reality operate 😆

[-] saltnotsugar@lemmy.world 16 points 11 hours ago

Just answer everything with, “How about we- AHHHH SNAKES!!!” And this will get you out of trouble.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 6 points 9 hours ago

Yep.

I’m now old enough that I’ve been here longer than the really eager and overachieving youths who did the management pipeline.

I have become a fixture, my name is now a role.
