My 2 cents: Don't be afraid to use the "block community" and curate your "home" from time to time, don't keep it static. There are a lot of awesome things here that can get buried easily.
People around here really love Linux.
Not saying it's a bad thing. Linux is great.
But people around here reeeealy love Linux.
Mmmm fuck yeah Linux so good 😫💦

I don't like to think of it as not having a home, more like home is everywhere.
Keep an open mind, don't be afraid of disagreement, and share your stuff! I find it so much easier to exist here as someone who's always been resistant to fitting into rigid categories.
I already have twice the amount of comments as I did when I left Reddit almost two years ago, and I was there for nearly a decade.
Hi, welcome! Honestly, same... Still trying to find by bearings after 3 weeks use 😅
Be wary of tankies. What are tankies? It's a pejorative term for authoritarian communists who will claim Pol Pot, Mao, and Stalin have done nothing wrong. They also support modern day Russia even though they're supposedly a liberal democracy because they're likely Russian psy ops guys.
We're still a pretty small community here and you'll see a lot of familiar usernames but you'll eventually fit right in to our tapestry of performative outrage and bickering. Depending on your home instance, you may not be able to see all the fediverse communities. I recommend hopping around until you find one that fits your style, like dbzer0.
Eviltoast is also pretty rad. It's where the geeks butter their bytes.
If you refer to left policies and people as "liberal," they get really pissy on here. You should do it anyway because linguistic prescriptivism is stupid.
also say you prefer windows and linux is too complicated to attempt thats always funny
It's like being a kid on sesame street and staring into the distance saying "boy I sure wish I knew how to tie my shoes."
Eh, just block all the .ml losers and you see a lot less of that.
The .ml people are all nut job Tankies anyway and should be blocked for your own sanity.
Le epic troll, well played kind sir! Have my upvote
The vegans, cyclists, and feminists are a bit feral; they tend to generate drama/ragebait threads at a higher rate than the norm. Good to read if you have popcorn handy.
Post what you got - folks here like content.

Copy pasting from another thread very similar to this one,
Welcome! I typically say that the Threadiverse (a decent all encompassing term to mean "reddit format" e.g. link aggregator type social media that includes Piefed, bin, Lemmy etc.) is about where reddit was 10-15 years ago.
I recommend lemmyverse.com for comm discovery, sometimes your might be looking for a comm that does exist, but for whatever reason your instance just hasn't picked up on it (typically someone from your instance has to manually go to a new comm and sub to it if your instance missed the automated bot federation from Lemmy-federate.com
We’re not without our cons though, biggest problem we have are probably the Tankies, but here they’re mostly on what's known as the Tankie Triad: lemmy.ml, lemmygrad and hexbear. For the most part, grad and hex are widely defederated from (Users and content of those instances won't be "synced" and you won't see them) and you only have to worry about .ml, but on Lemmy you can do a personal instance wide block if you’d rather just not deal with them. .ml tends to be more subtle opting for censorship of dissent before things get crazy on their threads and allowing certain propaganda to flourish (If you wish to see documentation of it, checkout !meanwhileongrad@sh.itjust.works ) or the megathread here (is .ml centric specifically) Here on Lemmy all moderator actions are public and available for viewing on what's known as the "modlog".
Mod log was something that caught me off guard at first because I didn't know why I was able to look at that
But it really is a fantastic idea to basically give moderators a real incentive to act fairly. I doubt that reddit mods would be that way if everyone could see what they're doing
I think we're doing powdered milk this week.
Ignore karma and just have fun.
Everything is made up and the points don't matter.
Thanks ! Yeah, karma is a common problem on Reddit
I honestly don't know or care what my lemmy karma is, or even where to look for it.
Also I've been banned from a reddit sub and a lemmy community for asking questions I honestly didn't know the answers to. Reason given in both cases was trolling or ragebaiting. Some communities are highly insular and suspicious of outsiders who don't have the group mindset. Someone here called lemmy "diverse" - that can translate to a diverse variety of monocultural echo chambers.
You don’t know because there isn’t anything like karma here. It doesn’t exist.
There are votes on posts and comments, but they don’t carry over to your profile whatsoever.
Lemmy is politically extremely left leaning, so prepare to get downvoted for just having center opinions, let alone conservative ones. But unlike Reddit, downvotes (and upvotes for that matter) don't mean shit.

I'm apolitic. It's bad Doctor ?
I'm apolitic.
not for long !
Lemmy is politically extremely left leaning
I feel like the average Lemmy user is a progressive first and foremost. And then we do have certain instances that harbor far-left people and they can get really loud.
But you know what's interesting? One of the reasons I left Facebook, a solid few years ago, was I was getting the worst kind of far-left propaganda in my timeline. It was only here and there, but one pro-USSR meme is one too many. I always remember that anytime I'm wrestling a tankie on here.
There's a butt load of tankies here. They are incredibly hostile to anyone who doesn't agree with them. You'll just have to block them one by one.
Think on dbzer0 they're already blocked, haven't seen any
Can I ragebait them?
- The cold war was indeed a global struggle to contain totalitarianism, and while the US certainly had a bunch of illicit, criminal side quests, by and large it worked quite well. Most of the evil in the world was festered by the russian colonial empire disguising as a "transnational" entity
- russia sucks ass :-)
Hey you got one already!
Fuck Cowbee
What the heck? They're one of the most patient posters on here! They always back up their claims with sources and actual arguments. I much prefer it to the more common way of arguing here, which is to build a strawman, attack that, and then when presented with real arguments either drop off or say some prejorative about leftists or liberals, and then drop off. Cowbee is one of the better things about lemmy.
I really don't think your post is acceptable. It's some personal vendetta type stuff, it feels abusive. I think it's ok to acknowledge that leftists are loud here and that it generally bothers you, and plenty of people do, and you won't hear me about it. But to focus on one specific poster like this is pretty toxic.
Welcome. You are now a Lemming.
Don't worry to much about people telling you to hate this instance or this other, you'll find out on your own. Use heavily the blocking fonction and everything will be fine.
You don't find a niche community to post or comment in? Do the same on the less niche but related community.
Around here people hate AI, love beans, Start Trek and Linux. You can disagree and still enjoy the memes.
Lemmy is like many tiny Reddits called instances. You barely realise you switch from one to another while browsing happily expect for "instance nationalism". It is smaller but more humane. That's about all you need to start.
Don't hesitate to share you hobbies to get recommandation. Here is mine anyway : !superbowl@lemmy.world
Enjoy.
Make alts on different homeservers.
cm0002 is not a bot.
Don't bait the tankies.
Opinions are like buttholes, we all have them, they all stink.
Have fun, don't be an asshole, it's ok to be wrong, but admit it when you are.
Eh, just block the tankie subs and you dont have to worry about them nearly as much.
Pretty much like Reddit. But its way more chill and a cooler place.
