I was wondering if there are places similar to discord servers where you can just hang out and talk while you are gaming or doing something else.

But that don't require you to sign up with personal information, ask for face identification or track you for advertising.

Matrix, XMPP, the platform you're on right now and the Fediverse as a whole, IRC....

There's a few Foss discord replacements about, but userbase isn't the same. IRC is still kicking but doesn't hold a candle to the 'LAN IN A box' feeling of discord. None are as good as discord yet, but i. Expect that will change..

Here?

If you're looking for live like discord, there are several matrix spaces I've seen

I've used matrix in the past but mostly for team chats. Is there some directory where you can find groups/topics?

are MUDs still a thing?

Oh man, I had some good times playing MUDs. Wish things were still like that.

Aardwolf is still up and fairly active as of when I last played, maybe a year ago. Has a nice client you can download with some QoL features like an automapper

It's not my favorite mud ever in terms of gameplay (RIP project Bob. Too good for this world) but it's pretty good. I did like 3 remorts and got bored of the random "go kill this mob" quests, and some of the area puzzles are annoying. These are related thoughts.

I suppose there should still be some running?

I can't answer, but I bet it would be helpful for people to know what kind of games you play.

Maybe thats kind of the difficult part for me. I kinda like almost everything. Don't really have a specific genre or specific type of game I like to play.
