Republicans routed as Democrats gain powerful new leverage over Trump for remainder of his presidency

Democrats have regained control of the US Senate, routing Republicans nationwide with historic victories that will give them powerful new leverage over Donald Trump for the remainder of his presidency.

Democrats will soon have the ability to hold up not just Trump’s legislative agenda, but also any appointments he makes to his cabinet or the federal judiciary – including the supreme court, where conservatives have a 6-3 majority.

Most hilarious is that all the redone maps actually went Democrat.

There was one stare where Republican government refused to redo maps, because they were afraid exactly this would happen. Guess they can say "told you so".

I cheer for the democratic win, I believe it is for the good of the nation and the world.

but I hate that I feel this was not Americans kicking out Nazis, but (to a large part) Americans whining about expensive dinosaur juice. Anyway, a win is a win.

[-] bantering@lemmy.zip 4 points 31 minutes ago

Yeah, do you think Haley Steven’s was the only blue Nazi? How many didn’t have to show their true colors and got pushed through?

Let’s see what happens with Israel, let’s see what they accomplish at home. I am worried there are a lot more wolves in blue clothing that we didn’t out yet.

I don't think are unproblematic, to me it's clearly a "lesser of two evils" thingy. It's a move in the right direction, not the solution to all problems obviously. Yea, let's see. Fingers crossed.

I just woke up from a weird not quite sick coma and holy fucken shit.

[-] D_Tom@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Talarico and Hinojosa winning is such a crazy thing to wake up to. Texas, and most of its citizens are still a lost cause, but good to see that there were enough good ones for once.

Michigan is less surprising to me, but I'm glad Georgia showed up and got Ossof in.

[-] Bipauler@sh.itjust.works 23 points 2 hours ago

So much damn negativity. Can some of y'all be optimistic for like five fucking minutes?

[-] D_C@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 hours ago

Yeah, fuck that. I was optimistic when Biden got in and then that old fool slow walked the easiest court cases that were to be cased in a court. I'm not falling for it again.

After over ten years of Drumpf, and dealing with other us shit that was generally tied to that fat fucking cunt, then maybe you can forgive the rest of the world for not believing a damned thing is actually going to change.

Obviously there's some congratulations for getting out and voting against that regime, but those congratulations are marred by the facts that the whole of the us should've done that in 2016 and again in 2024. It should be the basic standard to not vote for the corrupt or Nazis. And definitely not corrupt Nazis, but that happened... TWICE.

Plus other than this little blip then Epstein's rape buddy still hasn't felt any real consequences for the decades of illegal shit.

Also when I realised you peeps had voted like you did I immediately thought "that orange imbecile will now act even more deranged to fuck loads more things up, then pardon everyone, and himself, and nothing more will be done about it." Because nothing has ever been done for all those other many blatant crimes.

It's a good start. I'll give you that. But it is only a start. A very tiny inkling of a start.
If you truly want others to start looking for positivity and optimism then start charging the Nazis and Nazi enablers with their crimes. Make them sweat.

Again, congratulations. You've got a tiny bit of momentum so now do some good with it.

The anti-trans rhetoric coming out of Dem candidates and incumbents is still terrifying to a lot of my LGBT+ friends. After Palestine, people have shown human rights are optional and a negotiable stance.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 15 points 2 hours ago

I mean, it's hard to be optimistic about much given the current state of, you know, reality. Turning Trump into a lame duck is very worth it, but it doesn't mean much long-term unless these gains can be maintained/expanded into 2028 and combined with a progressive president (or at least one willing to compromise with progressives). There's a lot of work to be done before there's reason for optimism, and the Democratic Party is very good at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

[-] whatthey@feddit.uk 4 points 2 hours ago

Since Trump has been following the Nazi playbook so well, I'm more concerned when his Kristalnacht will be against Dems and what will be the orchestrated catalyst.

[-] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 hour ago

I'm always optimistic, I just base my optimism around the actuality of revolution. The fact that Democrats won the midterms doesn't suddenly fix the problems with capitalism that have led the US to this point to begin with, nor can it. The Democrats are nearly as unpopular as the Republicans are with the people. Socialism is still necessary, which still requires revolution.

Neither Cuba nor Palestine will be free from the genocide inflicted upon them from the US. This midterm cycle, many anti-trans Democrats won seats, and the party is shifting away from supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. The state and economy will continue to be dominated by billionaires, and the people will still go without.

We must never lose sight of the fact that revolution is not only necessary, but actually possible, and it requires a mass revolutionary socialist party and mass class consciousness, coupled with a crisis in the capitalist class. The first two are directly in our control. Get organized.

Now hunt them down. There is no time tolouse.

Musk will already be preparing to flee the country. These people are cowards, russian agents, traitors.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 minute ago

Why? The Dems are the same "people" as Musk and that and the wealthy don't suffer any consequences.

[-] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 38 points 3 hours ago

Cool, can we not have Schumer and Jeffries be majority leaders please and thank you?

[-] Sunflier@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago
[-] Necrifyre@piefed.blahaj.zone 38 points 5 hours ago

Democrats have basically Congress, Senate and House.

Trump is fucked. If Democrats want to mean everything they say to voters. Get rid of that asshole as soon as possible. Don't even give him the satisfaction of the last 2 years of his term.

[-] Rakonat@lemmy.world 10 points 3 hours ago

The only way Trump gets removed from office is if a significant number of Republicans flip on Trump and try to distance themselves and the party from MAGA and his policies leading up to 2028 election. With the current state of things that seems highly unlikely though things could change over the next 18 months that would push the GOP distance themselves enough the current admin to support his removal. Though if the last 10 years have been any indication, there isn't anywhere near enough backbone for them to turn against the far right.

[-] coyootje@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

They could make it happen if they use the Epstein files as a wedge. There was lots of republican support for that, why not leverage that to get him kicked out?

[-] chillhelm@lemmy.world 29 points 4 hours ago

Dems can not get Trump out. They would need 60+ in the Senate for removal. They would need at least 5 Rs for that. Impeach him one more time by all means but he WILL stay President.

Dems should focus instead on passing legislation, blocking all Trump appointments and reversing every single EO from the White House.

[-] treesapx@lemmy.world 24 points 4 hours ago

Investigations. Learn from the flacid Biden attempts and do better.

Agree totally. ‘The most uneducated buffoon in history stands at a podium, bloated with self-importance, lips pursed like a carnival barker ready to sell turd milk to the unsuspecting. He grins a grotesque smirk stretched across his face as he scrawls his name onto a hollow decree, a sham celebration of the dismantling of knowledge itself. The Department of Education falls, not with a bang, but with wheezing verbs, suffocated under the weight of his own staggering ignorance. Surrounding him are the usual suspects: cowards in expensive suits, servile sycophants clapping like trained seals, and racist opportunistic ghouls picking clean the bones of democracy. Liars, fools, and thieves all parasites fattening themselves on the hardships of the many. They stand in rigid formation, dead-eyed and soulless, their allegiance sworn not to country, not to principle, but to power, and the dark, festering rot that clings to it. And there he is the convicted wrong, the living embodiment of septic tank spew, his voice a noxious fog of grift and grievance. He lectures the world on right and wrong, irony clawing at the walls, desperate to escape the grotesque theatre of his moral void. The stomach turns, the air curdles, and for a moment, history itself recoils watching, in horror, as the great American experiment teeters on the precipice, led by a man who couldn't spell "precipice" if his life depended on it.’

As a non-American I would like to know the opinion of some Americans. How possible do you think impeachment is? There is not a need for many Republicans who want to distance themselves from Trump's toxic legacy and there are plenty of reasons to choose.
Also if making Vance look more than likely ridiculous is a better option than keeping Trump burning any possibility of the Republicans in the next presidential elections

[-] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 11 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago)

Impeachment is somewhat likely, removal from office is not. They would need 2/3 majority vote in the senate to have him removed. That said they probably will not impeach him because there is really no point.

[-] Nora@lemmy.dbzer0.com 147 points 7 hours ago

Wow. Some of these upsets are insane. God now all that's left is for them to actually punish trump.

[-] Cowbee@lemmy.ml 1 points 14 minutes ago

Beating Trump still doesn't solve the genocides in Cuba and Palestine, nor will it stop the fact that billionaires dictate everything about how this country is run. The working class will continue to get crushed for billionaire profits. We need an entirely new system, a socialist system, and that will never come from the democrats. It needs revolution.

best we can do is a non-binding finger wag
