I want to share a picture or GIF with my friend on Telegram, but I don't want to do it directly. What can I use?

Take a picture with a polaroid and post it to an image board you both share in the same house.

Use Signal and if you both are happy with it, dump that garbage app πŸ˜‚

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 9 months ago

Signal is better than telegram but just a little bit. Honestly people should be using Signal if anything as it is better than many other popular platforms like WhatsApp and regular SMS.

[–] someoneFromInternet@lemmy.ml -1 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Signal is centralized. I don't like it.

[–] minb@lemm.ee 8 points 9 months ago

Isn't Telegram also centralized?

[–] Blisterexe@lemmy.zip 3 points 9 months ago

Then use matrix

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 16 points 9 months ago (4 children)

Define "safely". That means different things to different people.

Telegram has their secure chat, which is fully E2E.

[–] Pantherina@feddit.de 7 points 9 months ago

Only on mobile, and hidden opt-in

Better drop that BS platform

[–] UraniumBlazer@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago

It does, but it's in a very malicious fashion. You need to activate something called "Secret Chat" for a given chat conversation. Only then is it E2EE. Otherwise, it's unencrypted like discord n stuff.

[–] someoneFromInternet@lemmy.ml 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I don't trust telegram because they have closed servers.

[–] BearOfaTime@lemm.ee 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

And you still haven't answered the question.

Define safely. We really can't help until we known what you're trying to do

[–] someoneFromInternet@lemmy.ml -1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I just want the telegram to not have access to the photo. Otherwise, I would use other methods to transmit it.

[–] TexMexBazooka@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Theoretically, they don’t have access to the photos even though they’re running the server between. That’s what end to end encryption means, it’s encrypted on your end and decrypted on the recipients end.

Unless the middle man in question retains both your and the recipients encryption keys, they can’t read the messages. This requires trusting the vendor in question.

However the only alternative to trusting a vendor is not only purchasing your own equipment, but also deploying it on your property, and building and maintaining your own isolated physical connections between those locations. This is what nation states and militaries do, the US military has an entirely physically separate and independent β€œinternet”.

There’s a concept in information security not to spend more protecting information than that information is worth. Your gifs are probably not worth the effort of building your own infrastructure, unless you’re sending some highly sketchy content.

I'm going to come off as retarded but I have to ask: when did Signal get this bad rep? I remember not too long ago that it and Telegram were praised for their privacy practices. What happened for that to change?

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 0 points 9 months ago

Signal requires a phone number. I'm not sure about telegram

[–] ULS@lemmy.ml 14 points 9 months ago

Not on the Internet. Convert the gif to dvd. Then burn the dvd. Then give to your friend and burn the dvd again.

[–] Pantherina@feddit.de 9 points 9 months ago

IP over Avian Carrier

[–] merde@sh.itjust.works 9 points 9 months ago (1 children)

OnionShare is an open-source tool that lets you securely and anonymously share files, host websites, and chat with friends using the Tor network.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 3 points 9 months ago

This is actually the right answer for this persons usecase

[–] wall_inhabiter@lemdro.id 4 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Isn't matrix supposed to be end to end encrypted and all that? Your old posts won't even be visible to someone who takes your account IIRC.

[–] UraniumBlazer@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yea, but it's severely under polished

[–] wall_inhabiter@lemdro.id 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

One lady I know called it "haunted as fuck"

[–] UraniumBlazer@lemm.ee 2 points 9 months ago

Lollll now that's one way to put it!

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 months ago

Matrix is only end to end encrypted if you turn on end to end encryption. I've personally had nothing but issues with its encryption.

[–] Kissaki@feddit.de 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So you want to encrypt it?

[–] someoneFromInternet@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] Kissaki@feddit.de 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

You can 7-zip it with a password. That's pretty simple to do and use - you only need an archiving program that supports it and can send that file and share the password.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 5 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's not secure at all. For instance Microsoft will brute force the password for all of your zips to check for malware. It takes all of a few minutes to brute force zip encryption

[–] Kissaki@feddit.de 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Note that I said 7-zip, not zip. Are you making that claim for 7-zip?

Do you have a source for the brute forcing? Because I'm interested. If it's actually being done I doubt it'd go beyond predefined common password lists or exploiting non-secure passwording.

[–] delirious_owl@discuss.online 1 points 9 months ago

Use a messenger that only sends messages encrypted e2e, such as Wire

[–] pineapplelover@lemm.ee 0 points 9 months ago

You could share a link to the image if you hosted a drive or photo sharing service yourself. Otherwise, I guess there's Signal or telegram secret chats.

[–] xiao@sh.itjust.works 0 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Do not use Telegram, use Simplex instead✌

[–] EasyDoesIt@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

simplex is a relatively new chat app but it's evolving pretty fast, i suggest it too, but it has several bug and missing feature that need to be fixed and added in order to make it like a standard chat application

  • the call will close if you go back to the chat (they should fix that in the next version)

  • it does not ring while you call

  • it can only be synced to a one desktop via the wifi

  • it has only local notification system (due to security reasons)

  • the calls are pretty susceptible to the line stability

but seems the only real secure chat app out there, you can check out the roadmap in the description of GitHub

https://github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I've never gotten a successful call so count yourself lucky. Honestly Simplex chat is to centralized but for now its a stable alternative to signal.

[–] EasyDoesIt@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago

it's not centralized, you can choose your smp, xftp and webrtc ice servers, or you can install them in your own server

so is a decentralized chat application

so far i was able to do calls and videocalls to everyone (i have 8 friends there), but i won't say that the calls are stable, the application needs time to stabilize, and that's what they are doing, you can check the the GitHub page or chat with the developer if you want to know more

[–] THE_MASTERMIND@feddit.ch 3 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Why are you down voting xiao ? Am i missing something ?

[–] airikr@lemmy.ml 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I have used SimpleX Chat for a few months and the following made me switch to XMPP:

  • It literally drains my battery on my Google Pixel 6a with GrapheneOS. I had to charge my phone 1 time per day. Before and now after, I only need charge my phone 1 per 2 days.
  • It is "impossible" for me to connect SimpleX Chat on Linux. Haven't tried on Windows because I don't use that shit due to privacy reasons.
  • If you're in a voice call and goes back from the call to send something in the chat (like a picture), the call will end. You are not allowed to use the chat while you're in a call in SimpleX Chat.
[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Simplex chat is good for group chats. The battery life is fine as long as you switch it to periodically check for incoming messages. Calls will break but they are already completely unstable so its not a big deal.

Just out of curiously, what do you use instead?

[–] airikr@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

True regarding the battery life. I did find the calls to be working really well.

My replacement? I installed Snikket on my server. And if the calls doesn't work (haven't tried it yet), I might use MiroTalk for that.

[–] xiao@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Did not vote anything yet, just noticed you replied to my message πŸ‘

[–] THE_MASTERMIND@feddit.ch 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

No i was asking why are they down voting you

[–] xiao@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

I do not know, actually I do not care about down votes πŸ˜
