В анонсе, который его родные отправили в почтовую рассылку vim_announce, сказано, что Брам скончался от медицинских (естественных) причин.

Спасибо Брам за улучшенную версию самого двоякого редактора, который позволяет не только редактировать разнообразные файлы, но еще и перезагружать систему, иногда выдергивая кабель питания. Твое дело также дало старт множеству улучшенных версий редактора, вроде neovim, так что наследие точно будет жить.

Выражаю свои самые искренние соболезнования как родным, так и всему сообществу. Это большая потеря.
