Also, in theory they invest the money, which means that they have more money to pay out.

Unfortunately, with no regulation and oversight, they can also just not pay out at all. Perhaps the US should try regulating its capitalism just q bit :S

Unifi is local, with optional cloud. Very pricy though.

Esphome or ZigBee bulbs are the way to go, avoid tuya for WiFi bulbs

https://www.athom.tech/esphome

ZigBee bulbs I have gotten from aliexpress, they are usually pretty good, but you'll need a ZigBee antenna or bridge.

Tuya require a cloud connection, so best to avoid.

I'm guessing your email and some passwords were leaked recently. The scammers are hoping that you:

a) have a chatgpt account already

b) are lazy with your passwords and reuse them across services.

Or

c) will click on of the verification code links and let them in

If they get lucky, they get an openai account in your name that they can fraudulently abuse. It costs them basically nothing to try, and theyll be doing it across millions of accounts.

Could the CMOS battery have died in your laptop, which has caused it to not detect the SSD? I have seen a dell laptop do that, and the AHCI/RAID setting caused it to not boot as well. Perhaps check if your BIOS setting for UEFI boot/legacy boot setting has also changed?

As for replacement, a new SSD is a cheap debugging step, and worst case you can put it in an enclosure and use it as a portable disk. I would try replace the SSD (after ruling out the legacy boot settings).

I don't think laptop prices are coming down any time soon, so if all else fails, you may just have to suck it up. Perhaps checkout second hand marketplaces?

The beauty of game dev, is that you can make the most cursed codebase, and as long as it works, the only person itll impact is yourself.

Also, startup costs are basically zero, there is no need for a top end PC, whatever you have now is probably good enough to start.

Its certainly more painful to collect dependencies with cmake, so its not worth doing if you can hand roll your own easily enough.

The flip side is that by using a library, it theoretically means it should be fairly battle-tested code, and should be using appropriate APIs. File watching has a bunch of different OS specific APIs that could be used, in addition to the naive "read everything periodically" approach, so while you could knock something together in an hour, the library should be the correct approach. Sadly, at least in rust land, there are a ton of badly written libraries to wade through... 🤷

More or less yes, but getting it dry will take longer.

Soaking the stain in water asap (before it dries) will go a long way.

I'm not a parent, but nothing you described there sounded unusual or horrible. Shooting up heroine with your baby in the microwave is horrible, you just ran out of patience.
