you might want to look up "colonization", the British, Spanish, Portuguese, etc colonized much of Africa, drained it of resources, then that same wealth made its way to the US which was also a British colony after they killed and stole the land from the natives. Colonizers who then min maxed it by going all in on slavery, then when the motherland was asking for too much in taxes from their profits they broke away. The US was built with blood and money.

that feels somewhat disingenuous considering labour is trying to take back privatised services back into public control, they're doing a shitty job at it but they do have British rail and I think there was one other effort as well.

Control I'd imagine, if upstream ever does something they don't want they can stop pulling the change downstream without having to migrate again to another tool internally, so easier to make that jump now ig
