The UK had a history of rhyming nicknames for shortened versions, like William -> Will -> Bill, and most of those are still common in English speaking countries. Richard -> Dick, Robert -> Bob (also Hob, Dob and Nob but these didn't survive).

These shortened versions can then get extended: Edward -> Ed -> Ted -> Teddy, Margaret -> Meg -> Peg -> Peggy, Anne -> Nan -> Nancy

In the middle ages it was common to make a diminutive name by adding -kin, -in, or -cock, which gave us John -> Jankin/Jenkin -> Jakin -> Jack. Also, Robert -> Robin, Henry -> Hank

It's a blue screen that's shown because something has died, I think it's a perfect fit.

I like that idea of using the different fonts for e.g. Copilot suggestions - reminds me of reading Asterix comics as a kid when they'd use gothic black for the Goth's speech, etc.

It's good to see the Beeb join the hallowed ranks of The Onion and The Daily Mash.

I know of it because Helix uses it, and it works really well.

In another video [...], young settlers are seen tampering with the village’s water pipes as soldiers look on. The military said soldiers helped repair the pipe soon after.

They just let it happen but cared enough to fix it afterwards? This is the kind of excuse I'd expect from an eight-year old.

If Russia blocks security updates, that's worse for Russian users than having to go to GitHub to install a plugin.

Study after study has shown that trees in cities offer huge benefits: offering shade and cooling (reducing energy consumption), draining storm/flood water (very useful in our more extreme climate), cleaning the air and emitting oxygen, homing wildlife, improving mental health by reducing anxiety and depression, being nice to look at.

Every city tree should be treasured and protected.

This is a great read. Those of you who only read the title or skim the first few paragraphs - I recommend you actually read through it all because there's loads of great parts in there like how she turned down an Elvis Presley cover.

It seems the image is a screenshot of the original page, slightly upscaled, but since the source page includes links to larger images we can make the HD remaster. Shotgun not me.
