Not necessary, 0.18.5 didn't have any database changes. But even if there were database changes, upgrades run the upgrade scripts sequentially anyways.

can't you already run Lemmy without image hosting if you just disable the pictrs service?

there's also a new config option to disable caching of remote images

Instead of building a new ActivityPub implementation, you could just run a regular instance of Lemmy and pull data from its database directly? Or use its API for searches?
