I wonder if instance admins should start closing old/redundant communities, just so the good ones are easier to find

I think there's a guide for that somewhere? Maybe I can try looking for it tomorrow if no one else finds it first. I think the admin control panel that shows uploaded images might also show the federated ones?

Lol yea. Very nice that Lemmy supports old threads unlike Reddit, the forums-style "New Comments" sort is such a good alternative to the other sorting methods. It should reduce the "need" for reposts, especially combined with Lemmy's nice auto-search when making a post.

It's hard, we probably made too many communities too quickly lol. But then again if you have a topic you're obsessed about then it's nice to have somewhere to post without worrying about spamming. Like I can't just endlessly post things about The 7th Guest or Deus Ex Randomizer to a normal games community, but spamming my own communities I do get some upvotes so I guess some people enjoy these posts.

I feel like people have been conditioned by Reddit to be hesitant about making posts. There's no reason for posting to have a high barrier of entry. Maybe we need to be more willing to post things, like people chatting in Discord.

And comments too, especially comments in old posts, Lemmy handles it way better than Reddit so feel free to drop comments in year old posts lol. Occasionally sort your feed by "New Comments" or "Active". I have a widget on my phone's home screen that shows my Subscribed feed sorted by New Comments. It was fun with old school forums and it's still fun on Lemmy.

Yeah I guess it probably strips unknown data segments from the file for security and privacy, and it would have a whitelist of segment types it will keep

And of course the ability to display them with ultra HDR

Another thing is that ActivityPub uses the hostname as the unique identifier, so I don't think you can easily switch from Lemmy to KBin or something like that if you're trying to use the same hostname as before

couldn't a malicious instance or fork just ignore who is trying to access the data and show all the toots that have been federated at all? anything that can be retrieved by another instance is public

So the whole study was based on what the car says its range is? Wasn't there recently news about Teslas lying/exaggerating about their range? Which would make this study based on flawed data?

I don't mean a website, I mean a friend. When I tell my friend to join Lemmy I should just link them direct to an instance for them to join instead of giving them 1000 choices

If the website does want to help you choose then maybe it could just use a simple flow chart or ask some questions to narrow down the choices
